Undervalued but perhaps not underrated, Barrie Barlow. If one looks at the profound drop-off in album quality after Barlow's departure, in my estimation the drummers who followed Barlow were either not on par or the egomaniacal Ian Anderson no longer esteemed the drumming aspects of Tull. Both Barlow, and Clive Bunker before him, were great drummers and integral in the Tull sound (certainly more evident in the playback than drummers post-1979).

Barlow's my favorite Tull drummer, easily. I wouldn't dismiss Doane Perry's skills too quickly, though. He's an excellent drummer.

Not dissing Doane, per se, rather, my theory is that as Ian became more totalitarian in his approach to the band, the individual aspects of the music became more limited. For instance, I consider Dave Pegg an excellent bassist, but you really wouldn't know it from his output with Tull. If you really look at Tull's 80s albums, the only one that stands out is Crest of a Knave where Martin Barre was allowed to unleash his licks. The more abysmal releases, like Under Wraps, featured heavy synths and drum machines. As far as recent albums like TAAB2 and Homo Erraticus, they are, as advertised, Ian solo albums (minus even Barre), with what sounds like hired musicians, particularly the metronome drumming.

I don't have any fancy videos, but Frank Fontsere is probably the most underrated/under-appreciated* drummer in the world. Nothing fancy or gimmicky about him, but is solid as f**k and gets the job done.
*best drummer I know who never really gets recognition |

We can't have an appreciative thread about drumming in prog without a mention of this monster of a track from Il Balletto di Bronzo:
One of my favourite bass and drums "duets". The flickering psych guitar and organ is just icing on the cake. |
