Oh well, I guess it's okay if everybody doesn't like Camel. They were never one of my favorites anyway. On the other hand, whenever the day comes that everybody turns their backs on Genesis is the day I'm leaving PA (or I may be one of the ones that abandons Genesis as well... what a horrible thought! )

I would call much of Camel's work "Canterbury Crossover," if that makes any sense.

I see what you're going for there, it makes sense to me. Is it time to break every sub-genre into sub-sub-genres now so we can include Crossover/Proto-/-Related specifically for each of the subs?

...so I wonder how much faith is required to convince Ivan and Co. to move Camel to Canterbury.

I believe that Pat will tell you as a member of the Canterbury team that they don't belong in Canterbury.

I'm betting it wouldn't go over too well since a majority of people consider them symphonic. Ah well, what good are labels anyway? Oh, and...2000 posts for me!

Yeah. But I think the main reason is it's just not worth the hassle, ensuing arguments, etc.

We should randomly reassign artists to different genres one day, just to mess with people.

I don't share this obsession with categorization.

It's mostly the creeps in this neighborhood. You'll not want for Camel fans in mainstream ProgArchives.

Nor I, but some categories are useful. The sub genres on PA have helped me find music that is related to a band I already like, so they aren't all bad. The problem is when people argue about where an artist belongs, that is the point at which I stop caring.

Van der Graaf Generator are Eclectic Prog, they will never leave my genre.
Every other band is up for grabs and the falsehood of every other genre tag can be potentially proven.

I remember my first Camel experience. I still think "Freefall" sounds like The Allman Brothers during the instrumental break.
Anyway, I think Camel is a far cry from Yes, Genesis, Kansas, Echolyn (for a modern example) and countless other symphonic bands that have more robust arrangements.
