^^ It didn't sink in yet, I'll have to give it another listen. I really enjoyed Yusef's album though, a fine album for a fine sunny afternoon ;)

I think I only heard Association PC's debut but I'm very curious to know what you guys are talking about :D

If I may Samuel try starting the album at the third or fourth track. May just help things along. I'm currently doing most of my listening via my little Cowon dap and have it set on loop ie albums never end they just continue. With the James Holden album it works like a treat...that is I often spin the sucker 1,5 times because the end and start seemingly line up perfectly.

Cool you dug the Yusef album. I too get that lazy afternoon vibe from it. One of my best memories of holidaying on Rhodes island was listening to this down at the beach whilst watching purple and blue sunspots in the corner of my eye.

I love that Association PC album Tymon. Kudos my good man! Do you also feel it sounds like it was made by two very different sounding bands or that the band somewhere after recording the first cut decided to drop acid for the remainder of the studio time? Not entirely sure what happened there but I just love how the album quite effectively skips 2.3. and 4. gear altogether and just hits the motorway running on that second track.

I do feel that way! It's a very successful mix of approaches, though. That liquid quality really makes this one of favorite fusion albums. Explosive stuff!

Yeah explosive is the right word alright
Just remembered my review of it from a couple of years back. Still perfectly captures my thoughts. Here's my take on that infamous second track:

'It´s aptly called Suite and starts out with some rather cacophonous jamming with the different instruments falling elegantly all over each other in what seems like a musical edition of a women´s mud wrestling match performed on guitar, upright bass, drums and a mixture of piano and organ. At some point the music pulls itself together - and feels like it´s been through a regular storm, only to be metamorphosed into an entirely different beast: the organ turns evil in an eccentric and freakish way - sounding like a derailed version of a circus melody spinning around its own axis. The rhythm section on the other hand turns solid and groovy balancing things out nicely - just in time for the electric piano to take off on a pulverizing ride over stock and stone. This piano player knows what he´s doing, that´s for damn sure. Abruptly the focus is turned to the drums for an earthshaking rhythmic hubbub, before the whole track takes the form of a runaway car violently crashing into a children´s percussion store, and rattles, bongos and eggs are flying all over the place in one big explosion. Ending this musical mayhem is (and I might be mad at this point) the distinct buzzing of a giant insect - genetically combined with the store´s ringing alarm.'

Yeah! Your description illustrates that album's dynamic very well. I love the expression "earthshaking rhythmic hubbub." Smile

Today:
Spacecraft - Paradoxe (You were right, Sam, I loved this one! Really reminded me of Lard Free and even Heldon at times, while being more easily digestible than the latter.)
Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven
Joy Division - Closer
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden - step out of the space provided.

Having a great holiday break. All headphone listens today....so far. :)

The Doors--The Singles. (sublime reissue. Really love it. Proto prog Heroes. )
NIN--The Downward Spiral (SACD) visceral experience.
Unreal City-- Frammenti Notturni ( this is my jam. Best album of 2017 for me. I can't get over how this band can keep getting better. RPI heroes. :)
Savatage-- In The Hall of The Mountain King. ( what an amazing shift in sound from their 85' release Power of the Night. This is an amazing album. )
IQ-- A Very Dark Christmas. ( I just got this in the mail yesterday and I'm all over it! Best live album of the year. Just incredible. IQ show no signs of weakening. I think the world of them. )
Niadem's Ghost--In Sheltering Winds ( anyone have this? God it is really quite good. Peter Nicholls sings incredibly well. Album overall has a Smiths flavoring to it. )
Royal Hunt--Devils Dozen. ( I really like what these Danish metallers do. I mean DC Cooper is a guy who can really sing. Also, there arrangements and song writing I think are some of the best offered in prog metal right now, only behind Haken and DT. )
Genesis--Nursery Chryme ( I was really in the mood to hear the Musical Box. One of the most fantastic epics ever written in prog. I seriously adore the whole album. Best Mellotron sound on the Fountain of Salmancis. )
Pendragon-- The Man who Climbed Mountains ( haven't spun this one in a while. I really like it but Barrett chooses some awfully tough vocal lyrics/patterns that kind of go waaaay beyond his range and capabilities. Otherwise it is a fantastic album. )
Slipknot--Iowa ( sometimes I'm just in the mood for that crazy Ross Robinson production. That guy is totally insane and I love him for that. )
Savatage--Streets ( having trouble putting this one down lately. )
Kotebel--Structures. (Calming...awesome instrumentals. )
Zimmer& Wallfisch--Blade Runner 2049

Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

^Man...you're listening to all of my favourites there Hubert Cool you're loving the Meditation Mass. Such a special album imo.
Oh yeah you also listed my absolute favourite Orbital record - hell one of the best electronic albums of the 90s. Those last 4-5 tracks are just brilliant. I heartily recommend playing this thing at a new year's party - I've done so many many times...mostly with good to great results (helps when people are jolly/drunk/high).

Morning Thunder. Starting my ramp up of massive disc spinning early this morning. I woke up singing some of the songs found on these discs so I knew right away what I had to do. :)

Fields of the Nephilim-- For her light (mini disc EP )
Savatage-- In The Hall of the Mountain King
Megadeth--Peace Sells...but who's buying?
John Frazzel-- Alien Ressurection score from motion picture (limited release)
Savatage--Dead Winter Dead
Genesis--Seconds Out disc 1&2 ( I quite enjoy the 2007 Nick Davis remaster of this one, but listening to my original 1985 pressing from Atlantic records far exceeds the Davis offering in every regard. )
Cliff Martinez & various Artists-- Drive (motion picture soundtrack. )
Ice Age-- The Great Divide ( open the pod bay doors Hal! ;)
Savatage-- A Handful of Rain.
Eden House-- Songs for the broken ones
NIN-- Survivalism (EP)
The Sisters Of Mercy-- Some girls wonder

Hemispheres - Rush
Moonmadness - Camel
Map of the Past - It Bites

Yes! LOL

I saw you mention these guys in the AOTY discussion thread. Wasn't aware of them before, but I am now. Sounds like my kind of thing, so will check out.

Skynyrd´s great, so Birds of Fire! My favourites in Skynyrd are pronounced, Nuthin Fancy and street.

Nice choices, those are also my top 3 Skynyrd studio albums. I'd probably rank them in the following order:

1. Pronounced
2. Street Survivors
3. Nuthin' Fancy
4. Second Helping
5. Gimme Back My Bullets
I'd probably go:

1. Pronounced
2. Second Helping
3. Nuthin' Fancy
4. Gimme Back My Bullets
5. Street Survivors

Their sound went down in flames before the band, IMO. (Sorry, that sounded harsh, but the only good track on SS is That Smell, IMO. The rest is too country bluesy for my taste).

Anyway, last couple of weeks for me:

Björk - Utopia
Gentle Knife - s/t
Gentle Knife - Clock Unwound (Enjoyed this a lot more than their debut. Definitely a step up!)
Amoeba Split - Second Split
Nils Petter Molvær - Buoyancy
John Abercrombie Quartet - Up and Coming (RIP John)
Bugge Wesseltoft - It's Snowing on My Piano
John Zorn - A Dreamers Christmas
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere (Instrumentally right up my alley, but the vocals I could easily gone without. Really wouldn't mind the album being fully instrumental.)
Major Parkinson - Twilight Cinema
Major Parkinson - Blackbox (I like the new, a bit darker, feel to things here. And it's clear to me now that TC was a transitional album towards this new darker feel.)
Weather Report - Heavy Weather
Ulver - Blood Inside
Jeff Wayne - The War of the Worlds
José Cid - 10000 Anos Depois Entre Vénus e Marte
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Gentle Giant - Octopus
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
King Crimson - Red
Leprous - Live at Rockefeller Music Hall
Leprous - Malina
AC/DC - Live (RIP Malcolm)

Yesterday:

Chicano Batman - Freedom is Free
Pharoah Sanders - Elevation
Michael Jackson - Off The Wall
Napalm Death - Scum
The Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms
Death Grips - Exmilitary
Schnauser - Irritant
ZU - Jhator (I am starting to get this album. It's rare you come across genuinely progressive music. This is one such time. Second track takes what Fleet Foxes did on Shrine/An Argument with those crazy "flutters" and takes it up a gear whilst still sounding incredibly soothing almost akin to ambient...but wild at the same time. Bizarre and utterly beautiful.)
Duke Ellington - Newport '56
Dj Sprinkles - Midtown 120 Blues

Joe Satriani - The Extremist
Joe Satriani - Super Colossal
Steve Vai - Fire Garden
Accordo dei Contrari - Violato Intatto (Didn't care for this much on first listen a few months ago, but really digging it tonight!)
Kotebel - Cosmology (somehow this July release slipped by, but I'm glad I found it now; fantastic stuff that fans of instrumental symphonic prog should go crazy for!)
