Not to wait until the last minute or anything, but...I just got around to pre-ordering it today, and it will be my first midnight release party for any game/console EVER!

wat. How is Call of Duty in any way relevant to what we are talking about?

Because the new CoD has just been released in the UK and people are queuing up for it at midnight and saying it'll be game of the year.

I thought everyone on here would be playing it.

It was also in reference to whoever said they have to wait a week to play a new release.  I was just pointing out that silly CoD fans seemingly cannot wait even five minutes after its release and even book time off work to play it.

It's entirely relevant, unlike you.

I might play Skyrim if it had that giant kitty in it.

I've just realized - I think Skyrim is the first game I've bought this year which wasn't something on sale for a very low price ($10 or less) on Steam!  I plan to get much more than my money's worth from it, so it's OK.

I am kind of hoping Skyrim is terrible like its predecessors.  Except people will realise this is the case and not keep glorifying such an average series as something it's not.

Just sayin'.

Nobody cares about Call of Duty fans who may or may not actually exist but certainly aren't posting on this forum.

I'm sure fans of other games will do the exact same thing, Henry.

I'm wishing ill on a game, not people.

James, I'm still convinced you never played Morrowind or Oblivion, or if you have you don't like open-ended RPGs, because those two were stellar examples of how to make them.  I find Oblivion to be more fun than any of the Baldur's Gate type games too (though I still enjoy those) and I'm expecting Skyrim to better them all.

Skyrim is going to be GotY

In reality perhaps (though I won't know until I've played it and given it my entirely fanboy-biased opinion), but there are too many ZOMG SHOOTER GAME LOLOLOL gamers out there now, so most likely Fish: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3 will win it. Ermm

Yea i agree, they're defiantly competition, but i just think the release is Skyrim is more "important"?

Oh, I agree that it'll be more "important" but too many people care more about playing a carbon copy of an older game than about how important something is (though I'll admit, if I had a much better PC than I currently do I'd be tempted to check out BF3 because it sounds a bit interesting).

I have played both (not to completion).

Morrowind is ever-so-slightly better than Oblivion.  Graphically it's terrible.  Character interaction is also pretty crap too.  I preferred the feel of the game though and I quite liked getting attacked by ridge riders (or whatever they were called).  I preferred the guild site of it too.  Killing people in Morrowind seemed to have more of a consequence.  There was a lack of an assassins-type guild in Oblivion.

Apart from some loony guy who randomly attacks you, you can walk around the Oblivion world without much happening.

My main gripes are:

1. endless fetch quests
2. endless and meaningless fights (respawning of the same enemies is not fun)
3. the terrible NPC interaction
4. the combat system (both games)
5. level-up system
6. just general open-endedness

I've not played Fallout 3 but what I've seen of it looks much better than Oblivion and I generally prefer D&D settings over futuristic/future-tech ones.

Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, even Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights (which have a lot of faults) are light years ahead and were made 10 years or so before.  I think I may even slightly prefer Arena over Morrowind and Oblivion.

I happen to prefer Isometric games too.

GOTY from who, exactly? Gaming magazines? Who give a f**k what they think about anything?

I kind of doubt Skyrim will actually be as "important" as you are trying to claim.

Indeed.  I agree with this.

That is partly why Diablo II annoyed me a bit.  You complete the game once but then you have to play the exact same game again with your existing character, against slightly more difficult opponents.

No, sorry, that's terrible.

At least give me a new story, new maps, new enemies.

I have played both (not to completion).

Morrowind is ever-so-slightly better than Oblivion.  Graphically it's terrible Yep.  Character interaction is also pretty crap too. Yep.  I preferred the feel of the game though and I quite liked getting attacked by ridge riders really?  They were the most annoying aspect of the game to me, since they were EVERYWHERE and almost always ended up giving me some sort of disease.  I preferred the guild site of it too.  The guilds were more diverse in Morrowind, agreed.  Killing people in Morrowind seemed to have more of a consequence. Only certain people; others, you could just mow down and act as if nothing happened.  Plus, if you were a member of the thieves guild, you could walk in with no money in hand and pay 0 gold to make all of your crimes disappear.  That took away all feeling of consequence to killing anyone for me.  There was a lack of an assassins-type guild in Oblivion.

Incorrect - the Dark Brotherhood was an assassin's guild.

My main gripes are:

1. endless fetch quests
There are a lot of these, true, but in a way it fits, especially for the guilds; they're not going to give a fresh recruit an incredibly complicated quest for a long while.  They'd rather test them out on something more simple, gradually increasing the complexity/difficulty/importance of the given tasks.
2. endless and meaningless fights (respawning of the same enemies is not fun)
Most enemies don't respawn endlessly in Oblivion - many wild animals reappear, but that could be explained by some of the population not being noticed the first time around.  The Daedra in the game respawning can be easily explained as well - gates to the plane of Oblivion open up, more daedra pop out.  Guards can be replaced.  Sure, they had a problem with most of the guards looking exactly alike, but mods fixed that in Oblivion and hopefully it'll be fixed in Skyrim either by the company themselves or by modders again.
3. the terrible NPC interaction
Agreed to a degree, but it was improved in Oblivion and looks to be even more improved in Skyrim; plus, all NPCs now follow their own schedule, Radiant AI is the system used, I believe.
4. the combat system (both games)
Morrowind's combat system was utterly horrible looking back; swinging a sword through someone's chest and yet missing them?  Makes no sense...Oblivion's, on the other hand, I thought was much better realized.  It could have used some improvements, true, but I didn't think it was bad.
5. level-up system
The advancement system has been changed again for Skyrim, so I don't know what it'll be like, but I had no problem with the leveling system in Oblivion - you do something a lot, you get more experience in it and get better at it.  The vanilla game's speed of advancement was a bit quick in my opinion, but one of the mods I use overhauls it and makes it more realistic.
6. just general open-endedness
What's wrong with open-endedness?  I prefer a game that lets you do what you want to do, even if that is absolutely nothing.  Skyrim allows you to do everyday tasks, too - for example, you can make money by helping out at a lumber mill, among other things.

I've not played Fallout 3 but what I've seen of it looks much better than Oblivion and I generally prefer D&D settings over futuristic/future-tech ones.

Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, even Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights (which have a lot of faults) are light years ahead and were may 10 years or so before.  I think I may even slightly prefer Arena over Morrowind and Oblivion.

I happen to prefer Isometric games too.

While Diablo 2 (and all Blizzard games) are grindingly boring for me, that's not a fair comparison because the Diablo campaign is fairly long even without replaying it. The problem with Oblivion is that everything scales up with you level, so a rat can kill you at level 20 and it's actually in your interest to slow down you levelling as much as possible...

And you do get new enemies on the harder difficulties of Diablo. They change color. ;-)

That's why I put important in quotation marks.  To me, it's the most important release of the year, as it's the only game I've cared enough to buy.  To a lot of gamers, it'll pass by relatively unnoticed.  They have made a lot of progress on the game engines and tried to overhaul the combat system to make it better, and if I remember right from one of the preview videos, Todd Howard said that the enemies no longer scale up with you (to address the other concern).
