My question wasn't about ratings or if kids could play certain games.
My question is this (to make it very simple): If a game came out where you were to plan and conduct a school shooting, killing children, teachers, and parents, would you play (and/or enjoy) it? If yes, then what if you were permitted to rape anyone in the game as well? If no, then why not? And why is GTA okay with you? |

I probably wouldn't. Not because I think it's ''wrong'' or ''dangerous'', or anything like that. I just don't see the appeal of playing a child rapist/murderder in a video game. Now, if I could play a character like that in a film or a play? Hell yeah, sign me up! I would love to see if I had the acting chops to pull such a role off! But as a concept for a video game, I personally couldn't care less about it. I would still support it being made, however. And GTA is okay with me, because it's fun for me to jump off of tall buildings or out of airplanes without dying. And killing innocent citizens isn't the only thing you are allowed/encouraged to do in there; it's more varied than that. It just suits me better as something I would find more broadly entertaining. But both games are 'okay' with me, I just would prefer to play one over the other, that's all. Go virtually rape and slaughter kids 'till your little heart's content, I don't care.

We can't possibly say if we would enjoy it. That is dependant on the quality of the game, not the premise.
I don't believe in censorship though so I'll *try* anything. Anything at all. Whether I'll like it I can't say.
I think people who draw a connection between a person's morality and the content of the art they are a consumer of are making a mistake.

Good thinking dear Robert. I am quite calm person in real life. I however enjoy killing in various GTA (3-VC-SA). I was driving my chopper once around the block, roaming streets, side shooting (with uzi) everyone I saw. I was doing this for hours and must have killed thousands of people. Yeah, I like virtual blood. I enjoyed Postal 2 a lot. I know, controversial game, but I used to like it. I haven't played it for few years now, so I don't know how I like it now, but ... it was great game. Pushing boundaries of virtual brutality. Simulate rape ? I saw this game Rapelay in Top Most Controversial games once. It's maybe the one you mention. It's considered as more sick than killing. After all, when you're playing as WW2 soldier, you are soldier. When you're playing Painkiller, you're killing hell spawn demons and monsters. When you're playing Warhammer 40k - Dawn of War, you destroy chaos mutants and other aliens. When you're real life soldier, you maybe sometimes kill people, because it's your order. As you have orders in majority of games (only small number of them are sandbox, open world as GTA's are). But you don't rape, that's it. Killing seems like natural part of games, most of them are more or less brutal. |

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

I doubt that I would play it, but if other people wanted to, that's fine by me. And GTA is okay with me because (a) it's an awesome game series, (b) your character can either be good or bad. In your description, this is just a game that is morally wrong. In GTA, you can choose the way your character acts, and I like that. With that said, I might play a game that involves something along those lines. As in, a killer is on the loose who conducted a school shooting, and you're trying to find them. Something like that I'd be okay with. I can't stand death metal lyrics that encourage senselessly murdering people, but I'm fine with storylines that talk about murder. The same thing applies here for me. |

That's a good point - I agree with you. I would take labeling over full-blown censorship any day. I don't agree with the entire idea of labeling content, but you're right - I highly doubt that will ever go away. |

That certainly wasn't my intention, but I didn't think I needed to begin a new thread on the subject. I really am not sure of my opinion and just wanted to hear what other avid gamers had to say. |

I probably wouldn't play it because I'd find it tasteless, and most likely boring. I don't think I'd mind much if it existed.
I have never had the chance to play GTA at all. |

There's actually a lot of truth to that. A game like that could be REALLY boring. |

I would rather play a game where you do the same thing with kittens and neo-proggers

Oooh, that's given me an idea. Varg: the Game You play Varg Vikernes in a comic book style and go around burning churches and murdering band members. Plus there is a mini-game a la Guitar Hero where you have to learn Black Metal tunes on different instruments. That'd get the censors going... |

^ Now, I would actually play that one! Anybody feel like pitching the idea to Ubisoft?

Not really. It just doesn't sound like it would be a fun game. Having said that, I really enjoyed Carmageddon where you got to run over people |

GTA doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. I'm not a wannabe thugsta. Same goes for those Mafia games ... Bah.
