So close to a week after I ordered Heldon's album Stand By, I just listened to my first sample of the band's material on Youtube...good stuff, I'm thinking I made a wise decision.

So today I got my second complaint. She got angry at me for almost stepping on her foot, and she thought the tone of my apology was condescending. Which, to be fair, it was! I started off trying, but when it seemed like she was demanding more than an "I'm sorry" (for once I actually read body language correctly, I think), I trailed off into a monotone because I hadn't actually wronged her in any way!
The problem is that TFK songs aren't any more interesting than a 3 minute song, but then they never end. But I really hate the AOR symph thing so I'm biased. As is everyone else here, with the possible exception of Rob.

Symphonic Rock is not always AOR! ![Angry Angry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif) Do you think you would hear "Tocotta" being played on the radio? No? Thought not.

I didn't say that it was, I was talking about TFK. And Tocatta doesn't count because it's a cover.

Okay, sorry. I actually agree that some Progressive Rock bands are really just playing very long Pop songs with long solos that are not actually that virtuosic (Dream Theater comes to mind.)

Actually, I have always felt that KC was a virtuosic pop band.

Yeah. For some reason KC feels really poppy. Never mind the fact that none of their longer stuff would be playable on radio. BTW, look at my sig.

Discipline is a very poppy song, it's just not poppy in a conventional way. And the three songs LTIA bookends are pure pop (and boring). Fallen Angel's sax solo is so pop it makes me cringe. Moonchild is a pop song followed by a boring improvisation, and the rest of ITCOTCK is heavily orchestrated pop songs. I sold ITCOTCK because it's so boring.
I wouldn't say it's completely accurate, but it's a fair point.

I get what you mean. I just think the fact that the man is so one-dimensional sometimes is a huge weakness. At least in my book.

Well not everyone has to be able to write a decent pop song. But when you're in a rock band that constantly flirts with pop...

Hmm, does anyone think that prog bands that could/can write short pop songs are better?

Yes. At least, better than bands that just write huge unimaginative rock songs. Genuinely groundbreaking music is so rare and frequently pointless that interesting pop songs are the way to go. And besides, 'prog bands' is a complete misnomer, given that bands don't really define themselves by their style if they're all that good.
