Marillion won three awards in the Prog magazine reader's poll.
Best vocalist was h. Best keyboardist Mark. And, a great result, best album, STCBM. Oh well, they might not win any such prizes on this site, but at least the world's biggest specialist magazine's readers have some great taste

Okay, a post from confused of Wales.
I would have thought that my above post would have attracted some form of comment. After all, for all of its faults, Prog is the biggest selling magazine of its kind, and the fact that the band won these awards should, IMO, attract some kind of comment, even if just to say that readers don't know what they are on about. For a band that formed some 30 years ago now, I think this is one hell of a result, especially when you weigh up the opposition, from the likes of Big Big Train, assorted prog metal, and so on. The TFK thread is still very lively, although I do not go there as often as I would wish. This one is dying a death, and that is a shame, because Marillion remain a very important and in the genre.

I feel bad since it didn't make my top 10. It was one of the 20 or so contenders that I had to leave off the list. Not a bad reflection on the album, which I quite enjoy, just a bad reflection on my tastes.

Actually,Scott, there was some pretty tough competition last year. In the collabs top albums thread, I named STCBM as my third position, behind the sublime Ioearth and Sylvan productions. Damned close to those two, but just short of the magical masterpiece status. I do think there is an important point to be made there, though. When an album that is top of the pops in a mag such as this does not make my number one (and I am utterly bonkers about them), and outside the top ten of someone as knowing as yourself, then it is, to me, a further sign that we are rather blessed with a plethora of great modern music. This genre is going from strength to strength, of that there is no doubt

STCBM made my top 10 this year and I think is their best since Marbles. Incredible album.

The feeling on the Marillion fan forum is that they produced something rather special with this one. I get goosebumps every time I hear Sky Above The Rain.

Thanks Scott, very much. We saw him on the last tour in Pontardawe, so we will definitely go again this year. Looking forward to the new album

My first review for the site was HITR, and in a rush of fanboy enthusiasm, I gave it the five star treatment. I have said before here that it is, in reality, a four star album. Excellent, but not a masterpiece.
I have it on now watching the football, for the first time in quite a while. I am enjoying it so much. There are some damn fine moments on this album. I wonder to myself just why such great music does not seem to garner the respect it thoroughly deserves. Certainly, Real Tears For Sale is one of the finest tracks the band ever recorded. What are people's thoughts on this now that we have a successor album? To me, it is growing in retrospect. What about you?

This band has always produced high quality music for sure. HITR is no exception, a very strong release it is. This late in the game the ratings are quite futile, honestly.

I love HITR, a great album. There are indeed many great moments on this album. The opening Dreamy Street/This Train Is My Life couplet is gorgeous. Add the wonderful Man From Planet Marzipan, Real Tears For Sale and the title track and you get the idea of the quality that flows through this superb double album. Any low spots are very few and far between. This is one of my favourite Marillion albums (think I'm in the minority!) and good as the new album is I still prefer HITR to STCBM. |

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it last night. It strikes me as the type of album that is enjoyed best when you haven't listened to it in a while.
What does come across is the sheer maturity of the band's music. Until STCBM, I thought it was Mark Kelly's finest moment with the band, but that surpassed it for me.

Latest e bulletin from the and:
14 February 2013 Radiation 2013.. RADIATION 2013. At this year's Marillion Weekends, as well as performing Brave in its entirety, we had also decided to play the whole of the Radiation album. Although very proud of this album as a collection of songs we have often debated whether it might not benefit from an updated mixdown.. so, following his sterling and much-lauded work on Sounds That Can't Be Made we asked our (increasingly resident) sonic wizard, Mike Hunter to apply his ears, hardware, software and talent to it. This turned out to be anything but staightforward as the original source recordings had to be oven-baked and transferred from their original somewhat dodgy digital format before the re mix could begin. The remix is now complete and sounds wonderful. We will release this in conjunction with Madfish who have done such a wonderful job on repackaging this as a 2CD digibook. The digibook contains new artwork and the original album as well as the new remix. We have played the album to a few people and their responses have ranged from 'immense', 'awesome' to " It's fantastic ... it's a completely different album. It's got space, clarity, power and you can pick up all the nuances". So we can't wait for you all to hear it. It's available to pre-order now and soundclips are also available to listen to at: http://www.marillion.com/shop/albums/radiation.htm ©2013 marillion & racket records eweb newsletter find a better way of life at marillion.com The album was recorded at The Forge studio in my old home town of Oswestry, and I was fortunate enough to have been given a sneak preview of the album by Phil Beaumont. I think Radiation is a terrific album, but probably will not get the remaster.

I won't get the remaster, but I listened to Radiation a few weeks ago and to my great surprise I enjoyed it very much! After the original release of this album I had given up on Marillion, and didn't buy anything new from them until I got Marbles and Sounds That Can't Be Made last year.
One trick in enjoying Radiation, I think, is to not expect a typical prog rock sound. One thing I especially enjoyed was Hogarth's pretty aggressive/expressive vocals. Excellent performance, and to be honest I wish he sounded like this more often! |

It was recorded right in the middle of the "we are not really prog" phase. Nonsense, of course, but there was a deliberate attempt on this, Marillion.com, and Anoraknophobia to move away from traditional prog. The band were all the stronger for it, IMHO.

Marillion is acquiring more space in my vinyl collection, and for good reason. Madfish is doing a fantastic job on all their vinyl. Recently purchased marillion.com and Somewhere Else....I am hopeful more of the H era gets released on vinyl. The mastering is some of the best, surpassing the CD issues by a long shot. The depth of music, detail and soundstage are simply amazing.....H's vocals are so lifelike, its really great stuff.
I was really disappointed that STCBM has not been issued on vinyl. I am also hopeful that Brave gets re-issued on vinyl, the double groove ending would be nice to have also. Edited by Catcher10 - February 17 2013 at 03:20 |
