When women are capable of doing the same physical work of men, and they also get paid the same, will I actually give feminism a passing nod. I'm a nurse and let me tell you when ever we get a patient who may cause problems or is a bit heavy when transferring from trolley to bed......guess who the female nurse tries get to do (or try to) the dirty job? If women get paid the same as men they must do the exact same as men regardless.

Oh Mariner14,
You give a bad name to men really. I am not a feminist, infact I think they are too aggressive and instead should focus on more important matters i.e. war drones, global warming, ending poverty etc., more serious matters. Your comment above on the other-hand gives them a good reason to become defensive because even I take offense to what you said and to be honest makes no sense at all unless you mean muscle power beats intelligence, animals have more muscle power yet humans are the stronger species ontop of the food chain.

P.S. I must add that a mule or donkey probably will have much more muscle power than any of us.

mariner14, you haven't been around the right women if you don't think they are as capable as men, both physically and mentally. My old karate sensai is a woman, and she could kick the asses of most men. Regarding intelligence, I feel I don't even need to mention any of the plethora of highly intelligent women out there.

A-hem, he said he was a nurse. Nursing is a pretty strenuous job and I would imagine that most of the female nurses he works with are more than capable of the physical labour the work entails. If there is one profession that has "the right women" then that profession would be nursing.
In the USA roughly 93% of nurses are female, in the UK it's around 89% - statistically there simply are not enough male nurses to do all the heavy work, however I infer from his post that male nurses get asked to do more than their fair share (ie an unequal share) of these heavy lifting tasks.
@Sonia - he said nothing about intelligence vs. muscle-power.

Once again, misread... But both genders should be paid equally no matter what, which is an idea that I have a feeling mariner14 isn't necessarily endorsing.

Meh - using the words and the grammar he did then you could be right, but then his last sentence clearly says: "If women get paid the same as men they must do the exact same as men regardless" - I think he means "equal pay for equal work whereas at the moment they are not doing equal work" but it's not for me to put words in his mouth.
Women, especially in the workplace, do manipulate, cajole and coerce men to do heavy lifting tasks for them and like the mugs we are we happily do it. This is of course reinforcing the stereotype of "the weaker sex" but it is not of our doing.

^^^ I have experienced a similar kind of behaviour too. I don't think people can or should duck discussing it because it's part of the problem. But, ironically, the solution to that is in fact pushing for increased participation of women in the workforce and in specific sectors which are male dominated. Say in my current company, women are a small minority and they often do have it easy at work and often get better appraisals than male counterparts because of a 'soft corner' syndrome. But when I worked earlier with a big accounting firm, the ratio of men to women was more or less 1:1. And there I found women weren't getting any undue privileges. Nobody offered to let women leave the work incomplete (and maybe dump it on a male colleague's lap) and go home before dark and in fact most women worked very hard and really long hours just like the men. Nobody spared them a lashing if they failed just because they were women. And no prizes for guessing that many of their managers too were women so no scope for chivalry there.

Agreed rogerthat. Dean, wouldn't you say that the situation in which you and mariner14 are describing emerged as a product of patriarchy?

Wait...if I read Mariner14 correctly, he was talking about certain physical tasks in the workplace that require a lot of strength. I'm pretty sure that most people will admit that men are generally physically stronger than women, so what's wrong with someone who is stronger being asked to lift heavy things?

It seems to me that very few people here who read Mariner14's post a) actually read it properly and b) actually understood it.

That alone refers to physical strength, I added intelligence to it, you pest! xxx

I agree with you Ambient, however this does not make one less capable on other fields, women and men can be competent in the same fields :) hugs xxxx No gender is less or more than the other. Only experience and knowledge/skills should make a difference.
