Topic: Portnoys Growls ? Posted: July 14 2009 at 00:55 |
I think they really work further more I think portnoy is getting good at doing these types of vocals and it should be encouraged in moderation.

I don't consider them growling, but anyway. They don't improve the song but neither do they destroy it despite being a bit of an ear sore. Did not vote.

Ditto! It seems to me a bit out of place. Maybe Portnoy should let Petrucci do these kind of vocals. Works a lot better with him (hence The Glass Prison).

Those aren't growls, you dorks. He uploaded an audio sample of him actually growling before Petrucci decided he didn't like how heavy that was and made him speak emphatically instead. Now, he's no champion growler, but I think they sounded better than the final product.
I enjoy Dream Theater, but I'm not a huge fan anymore. Nevertheless, Portnoy is way too often sl*gged for trying new things. Good Lord, just shove that man back into his niche and make them write more Metropolis songs...
...Wait. Does that word mean something I don't know? Why did it edit it?

Growls and mustache would make him a perfect singer IMNHO.

This time I agree. They're terrible. Good thing they last like 10 seconds.
They are neither angry scream or true growling. They're just a guy trying to test his vocal chords probably after too much of something..

Again, silly gooses. Geese. A Nightmare to Remember has NO growls in it. John Petrucci specifically told Portnoy NOT to growl. This is just emphatic speaking. Y'all are ridiculous.

Seconded. I don't think some people understand what true "growling" is (no offense meant to anyone). I tend to think of growling as something more associated with certain extreme genres of metal. Portnoy does have some really raw singing from time to time, like on Nightmare, but it's faaaaaaaar from growling.

Are you serious? That part of The Glass Prison has got to be the most laughable thing the band has ever done. I honestly cannot listen to it without cracking up. It is just so over-the-top and ridiculous, not to mention pretty poor sounding. I haven't listened to BC&SL yet though so I can't comment on the poll, except to say that the prospect of Portnoy growling (okay, fine, speaking emphatically) isn't one that makes me want to rush out and buy the album.

Just like Geddy doesn't rap during Roll the Bones.
It's a "spoken word" part.
Whatever...

What is this a linguistics discussion? You know what the OP means by growls. The question is whether you like it or not.
