Apparently, after their world tour, Dream Theater immediately got in the studio to record a new album, just like they have been doing since Scenes from a Memory.

The firsts news come from Jordan Rudess's web site: http://www.jordanrudess.com/jr/ (click on Wizard's Log).

Lets hope for the best!!!!!!!!!!

The funniest thing is to check how they are getting old. Mike is growing a freaking gut and gray hair and Petrucci looks like a  middle aged biker, lol.LOL

Just can't get excited about this like I used to.  Expectations will be fairly low I'm afraid.  Probably will still obtain the new album once it's released, though.

Systematic Chaos was a very good album, a giant step up fomr the lame-ish Octogenarian.
I'm quite optimistic.

If the next album is anything less than amazing, then that I wont bother buying any more Dream Theater studio albums after that. In fact, I wont buy the next album without listening to it first (because I will have DT fanboy friends that will buy it) anyway.
I don't like to have to say that about one of the bands that got me into prog, but unfortunately the last two albums were far from being truly inspiring and because of that, for prog and metal releases in the last few year years I tend to listen to other bands instead.
I don't expect the next album to be particularly great either.. again, something I hate to say for the band that released some of my favorite prog metal albums ever in the form of I&W and SFAM.

Oh, come on people, lets have a bit of optimism, please!!  I'm always happy to hear they've returned to the studio, but then I'm an unashamed, 40 year old DT fan-boy....Big%20smile

i was hopeful for Octavarium... it sucked with the exception of the first and last tracks. I cannot really even listen to that album anymore, except maybe Root Of All Evil and Octavarium once every 2 months or so.
I waited another 2 years for Systematic Chaos.
It was not really worth the wait, they could have just easily done that album 2 weeks after Octavarium rather than releasing something quite average like that.
I barely listen to SC anymore either, I can think of so many 2007 releases that were so much more inventive, inspiring and left me wanting more.
It's hard to be optimistic when a band managed to disappoint me several years consecutively with studio albums.

Hell, I understand your post was being a bit on the fun side, but still

each to their own, Hughes.... I would agree that 2007 was almost certainly the strongest year ever in terms of quality PM offerings with at least 20 highly respectible releases, but for me there was no one release I heard which stood out as being a total masterpiece.  That said, and for what its worth, I'll print you off my Top 20, just so you can see what I thought about the year...

Oh my god, it's not ever yet?? As much as I am highly excited about a new DT album so soon I don't think I could sit through another installment of that song, it's getting very tiring.

Although I did think that Systematic Chaos was their best album since Six Degrees! Big%20smile

For me, Octavarium was the best recent DT album - it was the only one that showed the full range of their material - light to dark, dark to light.  Systematic Chaos and Train of Thought were both a bit unvaried and heavy for me.

oh, damn you all! I like all DT releases, except Falling Into Infinity, which is quite boring. Though it took me a wile to get into SC, i now like it very much. In fact, the only sub-par DT "recent" release is Train of Thought.

I enjoy FII a fair amount. Less than many other DT releases, surely, but still a fair amount.

It's Train of Thought that gets me a bit derailed sometimes. Enjoyable, but hardly memorable (IMO!!!). But DT certainly does have some killer albums . Personally, I hope the new album is in the SC style... although I hope they change it a little bit, because I know a lot of critics who will have their heads if they don't.

that's a great list Mike...you tend to listen to more albums than I do, and a wider variety of Prog Metal as well...Smile

of course, its all subjective, but I'm slightly surprised that there is no SUE or Darkwater on the list, and I never thought you'd have a Therion album at No 8!!LOL

you do deserve a thumbs up for that....Thumbs%20Up
