I'm looking for heavily dissonant music, and I haven't been in much success finding new music with this characteristic.  If you don't know what I mean by dissonance, I mean anything that's music is "ugly", this doesn't mean it has to be the heaviest of heavy metal, not at all, I don't care for the heaviness whatsoever.  Bands that I'd say follow what I'm talking about:

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Paper Chase, Flat Earth Society (jazz, not the hardcore band), Frank Zappa, Shining, 5UU's, etc.

I basically want melodies that are "unpleasant" and "grating", and specifically new.  Again, this doesn't mean I need constant screaming in the music, it just has to be dissonant.

Thanks man!  Ahleuchatistas are great, I love What You Will.  I'm not a big fan of the new Hella album, though, but I'll check out the others later tonight.  Thanks again.  :)

Jesus, Runaway Totem is f**king great.  Now I'm liking Upsilon Acrux even more. :)

You might like Univers Zéro, Présent and Art Zoyd. Heavily dissonant at times, and very lovely if you're into that kind of stuff (which obviously you are). Etron Fou Leloublan might also be your kind of thing.

Would Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante fit into this category? I guess that's pretty tough listening in the vein of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Some elements of the band are often compared. Anyway that one's good and their self-titled should be good as well, but I haven't heard that yet.

Try the Fantomas debut, Secret Chiefs 3, and the John Zorn trilogy Moonchild/Astronome/Heliogabalus.Smile

I have yet to hear Heliogabalus, I never knew it existed?!  I'll check that immediately.  Fantomas, SC3, and Mr. Bungle are also all great.

It's from 2005, but this is a recent album I discovered that I've been blown away. It's not for everyone, but you seem like a guy that would enjoy it:  Orthrelm - Ov

Try these 2007 releases:

Cato Salsa Experience & The Thing with Joe McPhee - Two Bands and a Legend - a free jazz trio collaborating with a garage-rock band = awesome! great mix of noisy improv and hard rock.
Nels Cline, Andrea Parkins & Tom Rainey - Downpour - just noisy improv here, Nels Cline's guitar work is jaw-dropping and Tom Rainey is my current favorite drummer.
Upsilon Acrux - Galapagos Momentum - if you like Ahleuchatistas, you'll like this album. they've dropped the Moog and are now a lean, mean dual guitar-bass-drums quartet.
Zs - Arms - maybe my favorite current avant-rock band, tough to describe but my review of Buck (a 2006 release) linked to by chamberry tells most of the story.

Oh and if anyone's interested, I've also finally found Maahan by Alamaailman Vasarat today, it's great, I've always liked the band, but their stuff is sometimes hard to find.  I'm glad I found it, it's dissonant, so it pertains to this topic and it was released this year as well.  ;)

A big misconception here. Not all avant-garde is dissonant.

^ maybe not dissonant, but not exactly melodic either ... at least I can't think of any obvious examples of "melodic/harmonic Avant-Prog".
