I'm looking for heavily dissonant music, and I haven't been in much success finding new music with this characteristic.  If you don't know what I mean by dissonance, I mean anything that's music is "ugly", this doesn't mean it has to be the heaviest of heavy metal, not at all, I don't care for the heaviness whatsoever.  Bands that I'd say follow what I'm talking about:

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Paper Chase, Flat Earth Society (jazz, not the hardcore band), Frank Zappa, Shining, 5UU's, etc.

If you still have no idea what I'm talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consonance_and_dissonance

I basically want melodies that are "unpleasant" and "grating", and specifically new.  Again, this doesn't mean I need constant screaming in the music, it just has to be dissonant.

Thanks man!  Ahleuchatistas are great, I love What You Will.  I'm not a big fan of the new Hella album, though, but I'll check out the others later tonight.  Thanks again.  :)

Jesus, Runaway Totem is f**king great.  Now I'm liking Upsilon Acrux even more. :)

You might like Univers Zéro, Présent and Art Zoyd. Heavily dissonant at times, and very lovely if you're into that kind of stuff (which obviously you are). Etron Fou Leloublan might also be your kind of thing.

Would Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante fit into this category? I guess that's pretty tough listening in the vein of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Some elements of the band are often compared. Anyway that one's good and their self-titled should be good as well, but I haven't heard that yet.

Try the Fantomas debut, Secret Chiefs 3, and the John Zorn trilogy Moonchild/Astronome/Heliogabalus.Smile

I have yet to hear Heliogabalus, I never knew it existed?!  I'll check that immediately.  Fantomas, SC3, and Mr. Bungle are also all great.

It's from 2005, but this is a recent album I discovered that I've been blown away. It's not for everyone, but you seem like a guy that would enjoy it:  http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/display.php?rev=orth-ov - Orthrelm - Ov

Also check out: http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/display.php?rev=zs-buck - Zs - Buck . Here are some samples: http://www.zzzsss.com/audio.html - http://www.zzzsss.com/audio.html

I haven't heard much releases from this year so I can't help you as much as I would like to, but Avestin's recommendation should do the trick.

Try these 2007 releases:

Cato Salsa Experience & The Thing with Joe McPhee - Two Bands and a Legend - a free jazz trio collaborating with a garage-rock band = awesome! great mix of noisy improv and hard rock.
Nels Cline, Andrea Parkins & Tom Rainey - Downpour - just noisy improv here, Nels Cline's guitar work is jaw-dropping and Tom Rainey is my current favorite drummer.
Upsilon Acrux - Galapagos Momentum - if you like Ahleuchatistas, you'll like this album. they've dropped the Moog and are now a lean, mean dual guitar-bass-drums quartet.
Zs - Arms - maybe my favorite current avant-rock band, tough to describe but my review of Buck (a 2006 release) linked to by chamberry tells most of the story.

I liked the Moog in Upsilon Acux's relreases, but it would definitely be interesting to hear them without that playful touch the Moog gave them.

Thanks, you guys, I'm listening to Zs right now, and Jesus Christ, this is exclusively what I wanted.  I'll be sure to check the others as well!

THANKKKKKKKSSS!

Oh and if anyone's interested, I've also finally found Maahan by Alamaailman Vasarat today, it's great, I've always liked the band, but their stuff is sometimes hard to find.  I'm glad I found it, it's dissonant, so it pertains to this topic and it was released this year as well.  ;)

A big misconception here. Not all avant-garde is dissonant.

Panzerpappa
Pochakaite Malko
Parts of Yugen's Labirinto D'acqua

There's more I'm sure, but I can't think of right now.

EDIT -
French TV
Some Estradasphere

There are examples of those harmonic/melodic parts in other bands, but not as a general sound of the album, but they do appear in songs, either throughout the songs, or in parts of a song.

Taal are not exactly dissonant, but I have heard they have a new album coming out later this year, but apparently they've shrunk in size somewhat..

All has been said really.  Of course, there's always the Japanese brutal/noise scene.  I am sure you're aware of Boris and Merzbow and even Boredoms.

Not a recent album, but try Musica Transonic - Orthodox Jazz

That album hurt my ears!  The band features Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Kawabata Makoto (Acid Mothers Temple) and Asahito Nanjo (High Rise).

I believe their other albums maybe a bit more listenable.

I received my copy of Mahaan a few days ago and expect to spin it soon, as like you, I love that band.

Of course if you define Avant-Prog to include bands like Taal then there are melodic Avant-Prog bands.Wink

In that case I think that these bands are borderline Avant ... the more melodic/harmonic the music is, the less Avant.Embarrassed

The first thing that came to my mind when I heard melodic Avant-Prog I thought Hella's new album, There's No 666 In Outer Space. It's a very accessible album and they still have that crazy playing of Zach and Hill, but now a bit more restrained.

You should check it out, Mike.

Oh I agree Mike, that's why I would like to move them (back?) to Avant-Prog, as I feel they don't quite belong under Art Rock (even though the ART have know issues with them there).

To me, Avant-Prog can be melodic, much of Zappa's releases are for instance.  Infact, many chamber rock bands are melodic in many respects.

Melody and major notes do have a place in Avant-Prog, as far as I am concerned.

^ sure, but the melodic parts aren't what makes the bands Avant Prog ... on the other hand remove the dissonant/weird elements, and they're not really Avant anymore. The melodic parts provide an interesting contrast though!

Anymore albums this year of dissonance?  I don't have many "ugly" albums from this year so far, but there has to be more out there, there absolutely has to be!  Cry  Dissonant albums from this year I have:

Alamaailman Vasarat - Maahan
Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity
Holy Molar - Cavity Search
Kiss Kiss - Reality Vs. The Optimist
Locust - New Erections
Shining - Grindstone
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - In Glorious Times
Tera Melos - Drugs to our Dear Youth
Tin Hat - The Sad Machinery of Spring
Upsilon Acrux - Galapagos Momentum
Zs - Arms

A couple of those were recommendations from you guys, maybe that list will give some of you some suggestions too.  But I would definitely appreciate some more recommendations.  And relatively tight compositions would be nice as well (I'm not one for improv and noodling).

What may this be? I have not seen this release. I know Kneale has done three other albums this year, I don't think they have been released yet, not sure. Last year was stunning for him with Our Love Will Destroy the World and Curved Surface Destroyer; the later being one of my favourite B.C.M. albums.

Glad to see this thread is back on track after a pointless exercise in categorization and pigeonholing.

Mecca, I know you don't like the heavy stuff so much, but there is an extreme metal album from 2007 that's as dissonant and out-there as any avant-rock I've ever heard: Car Bomb's http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/display.php?rev=cb-cen - Centralia . The riffs on this one are just shockingly ugly (and awesome). Like a grindcore version of Gorguts' avant-metal classic of a decade ago, Obscura. Lots of harsh screaming and heavy riffs, so if you don't like metal be warned - but if you want ugly and dissonant give it a chance.

Also, this kind of metal is super-super-tight, like Ahleuchatistas et al. No noodling or improv here.

For dissonant music, definitely PRIMUS! Dissonant riffs and solos, weird vocals, and amazing "in your face" bass. Clap

I was listening to Sailing The Seas Of Cheese yesterday, and remembered how good it is. I ought to get some more stuff like this!

Oh no, I'm fine with any form metal, but I like it to be experimental as well.  Radiation 4, I like because it sounds wacky, same with !T.O.O.H.!, Death Unit, Boris, etc.  I just don't like any genres of music that sound watered down and easy to pigeonhole, I don't like any of my music that sounds like the norm of the specified genre.  I like any music, as long as it has unique flavor that changes it from sounding "OMG this is black metal", "OMG this is pop", etc., etc....  And thank you for the recommendations!  Smile

Car Bomb f**king rules so far, the time signatures are crazy.

Also, another reason why I like dissonance is because "ugly" music most of the time sounds a bit more unique than the consonant songwriting, not that I don't like consonant music, but the word "dissonance" to me, just means "more interesting".

And also, I'm going to make sure to check the above recommendations as well, I'm not forgetting them, haha.  Thank you!  You have like 8 albums, what a goldmine!  Thanks again!

Try Ground Zero for a really great mix of Merzbow-like abrasive noise electronics and a full avant garde band.

Not prog, but I strongly recommend Wolf Eyes... their debut Dread and Burned Mind are exactly what you're looking for, obtuse, dense noise electronics mixed with slow stoner rock... really dark and awesome stuff.
