Personally, I think the franchise is ridiculously overhyped and not that good at all, although entertaining when you want a really quick read just for the hell of it...
Book 1: 4/10
Book 2: 6/10
Book 3: (apex) 7/10
Book 4: 4/10
Book 5: 2/10
Book 6: 6/10
we'll see...but overall i think it's rather a waste of time...
especially compared to REAL fantasy like A Song of ICe and Fire

I started reading it a long time ago before the hype blew up and I want to finish the series. It is way overhyped (have you seen the fan fic?  ) Overall, it's a good read I guess.

They were good when I read them, I was really into the first three books but then just lost interest. Overhyped, yeah, but since it actually gets kids to read rather than watch TV, they deserve credit.

I read the first five books some years ago. I thought they were alright, good entertainment, but they didn't exactly leave a lasting impression on me.
So, overhyped, but not too shabby, I suppose.

It's tremendously overhyped ... and while I can understand why children love it, I fail to see what some grown up people see in it.

Stop looking at the series from a high brow literary point of view,and recognize the books for what they are.A great set of books to introduce to kids to try to get them to read for pleasure.
My children read them to tatters,so what is so bad about that?
Personally,I think the books aren't bad.Good plot and pacing,great characters,etc.The prose isn't the best,but they were meant to be children's books.

I will go all the way to reading the septology, despite that I have come, in three years, to listen to an immense greater quality of literature and even fantasy. My relatives in the US (they send me original copies of the book  ) actually think I'm still dedicated to Harry Potter, but I remember them I already read giants of literature. Let's see: HP I - 7/10 HP II - 5/10 HP III - 6/10 HP IV - 7/10 (probably my favorite) HP V - 5/10 HP VI - 5/10 to note is the fact that, by literature, the volumes are decreasingly low and have a simple style. nothing, thus, is fascinating beyond the fantasy and the good mood plot.

What I love most about the series is that EVERY major publisher passed on her book just like EVERY major record label passed on the Beatles and absolutely no one thought Van Gogh could paint. Just goes to show that the suits in charge have no idea what the public will clamor for. Rowling is a fine writer with an unfettered imagination and she has stuck to her guns and proven all the experts wrong. Bravo.

I absolutely love it, I started reading it before the hype (before it even ever went to America I believe) pretty much as soon as the first book came out here in England. Not so keen on the movies though. I'm 18 now, and I'm going to take a whole day to read it when it comes out this time (had the last two endings ruined for me) and I think when I read the last word of the last chapter it will symbolise the end of my childhood. I think I was about 8 when the first came out.
Don't forget, these books were for kids originally, but so many adults just started reading it. They even had to make an alternate adults cover about a year after it came out as adults were embarrassed reading a book with the childrens cover in public.
Here are some of my predictions for the new book: - don't read if you haven't read all the books
Snape is not evil (duh, it was Malfoy who had to kill Dumbledore, and Dumbledore only said to Snape 'please Snape, please' you just assumed as you were reading it he meant 'please Snape, no) I would be pretty suprised if Snape was the bad guy
Either Dudley or Aunt Petunia is a wizard/witch. Dumbledores quote to Petunia and Vernon ' You've neglected Harry, but you've neglected your other sun even more' which could be seen as Dudley been a wizard. And Rowling also hinted Petunia would have a big role.
I think Hagrid is going to end up being a hero in this, I'm not too sure about Neville, but obviously he's going to do something very important.

I personally love the series. I can understand not liking it if you have only read the first two book, however, because they are very simplistic and obviously written for children. From the third book on Rowling's writing has progressed by leaps and bounds, and now I think the books are rather too long and too dark for children. Book five has been my favorite so far.
