The Beatles are here in PA (and I for one think, is this case, they deserve this). So, which one of them was for you the best musician? Musician as in instrumentalist and also as in all-around knowledge and output of music....

I think neither one of them was a MASTER of their instrument (Ringo sucked until Abbey road, Lennon was talented but the music didn't ask for much... Harrison was gifted but nothing extraordinaire and McCartney, though a MONSTER melody-maker, was an average bass player....)

I have to agree, although I do not know much about the beatles, I think it was really a cooperation thing; but I could be really wrong :P

  Harrison was the best player and McCartney the best song writer while Lennon was the best frontman so they kind of combined well. George Martin worked wonders with the arrangements.

Lennon is my favorite by far. I love his solo stuff and his words. BUT the best instrumentalist is definitely McCartney. Other than McCartney they weren't too good.

Overall, I had to vote for Lennon though, he's by far the best lyricist and the main reason I listen to the beatles.

George Harrison is one of the most underrated guitar players ever (it seems the Rolling Stone got something right when they placed him in the top 25 guitarist ever). However, Ringo is a lot more innovative than people give him credit. My dad (a professionally-trained percussionist who is well aware and a big fan of the Beatles) credits Ringo as the first melodic (yes, I said melodic) rock drummer. Lennon, while not a pyrotechnic guitar player or flashy pianist, was an outstanding songwriter and I believe that indicates great musicianship. McCartney also is a great musician, probably the most talented of the group in terms of technical aspects. He is the only Beatle who can read music, and his songwriting ranks with Lennon's.

Indeed. He's not an octopuss-like drummer like many today, but he added to the melody with some very simple-yet-precise tom-tom fills that followed the music... he had some interesting ideas.

None of them was extremely skilled at his instrument, but Paul was definitely the best.  Just listen to the guitar solo on Taxman!

Paul was the best, but I voted for the four combined. The Beatles would not have been the success they were without the teamwork on each album, despite how much each member hated the other three

Got to be Paul McCartney. I remember the band well in the sixties (coming from Liverpool I couldn't avoid them! And my sister used to dance with Macca!)
They were not that popular at the time with people over a certain age. And even now I know more people who don't rate them than people who do in Liverpool. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time, like many are.
What makes me laugh is watching tourists visiting 'the Cavern', and saying 'Wow! The Beatles played here!' When, of course, they didn't. The original Cavern was demolished and is now a car park a little distance away.LOL
 
However, that is off topic, sorry! Paul could at least play a few different instruments, though he was no wizard at any of them. Interestingly enough, there was a programme on tv, I think around last Xmas time. He was at a Liverpool college, I think, with an audience. He was getting various people to make music with different objects, and then multi-tracking to create a song.
He himself laid down the drum track, then the bass, then rhythm guitar, then lead guitar. And he did it very well actually.Smile

Actually I don't think he can read music, he normally gets someone else to do that for him. He certainly used to work this way in the Beatles. When they had guest musicians in, he used to hum the tune he wanted them to play and leave them to work it out.

None of them were virtuosos but Lennon was the intellectual force behind the beatles and the one who pushed them to the realms of prog. George also experimented but he lacked the influence of Lennon within the band. So, I'd go for Lennon.

Paul McCartney; excellent singer and bass player. Also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. And a hell of a composer.

Macca was the best bassist, guitarist, drummer and keyboard player of the Fab Four but that doesn't mean he wrote the best songs. My favourite Beatles song (She Said She Said) doesn't have any McCartney on it at all.
