I chose maybe. His music is progressive in the sense that it combines traditional aspects with things that haven't (or hadn't) been done before...I think its a tough decision to make.

no, his music, while technically amazing is devoid of any passion and ends up being boring.  he doesn't really do anything (new) with the talent he has either.  And no, he isn't prog.

I'd have to say an emphatic NO.

Don't get me wrong, I know he's a hugely talented guitarist & contributed much in his short stint with Zappa, but I agree 100% with Carl floyd fan, there is no passion there, and you can only listen for so long to what my wife refers to as "guitar w**king".

This isn't progressive rock, just re-hashing what Edward Van Halen was doing 25 years ago, only faster.

I think Vai is great especially Re-Flexible and Passion & Warfare, but prog music??? No.

My admiration grows for Vai having found him guesting on others' albums of other sorts of music, e.g. with Al DiMeola playing (on the remake) Racing The Devil On A Turkish Highway or with Anglo-Indian musican Surinder Sandhu and British jazz saxophonist Andy Shepherd doing Indo-Jazz Fusion.

I disagree with the comments about his lack of passion - methinks you look in the wrong places!

There are swarms of *other* "virtuosi" who release passionless, sterile, technical, ego-centric noodlefests, but for me at least, Vai stands head, shoulders and probably many other bits above his contemporaries.

To say Vai's solo material lacks passion is a lot like saying Zappa's music lacks passion.

I know I shouldn't be here...

But there's no doubt that Zappa is prog!

And virtuosity is not the only criteria

Zappa is one of the very best guitar player and a great composer!

..and Zappa rated Vai very highly, and perfomred with him on numerous occassions.

I saw Vai playing with Dave Lee Roth some years ago, and he was the best thing happening on the stage. He's very talented,versatile, and original but not really prog IMO.

Wasn't Satriani Vai's guitar teacher for a while??

A freind of mine was into Satriani in the 80's. I thought his albums 'Not of this Earth' and 'Surfing with the alien' were rather tedious, so I never listerned to anything else he did.

You're quite right. I agree. Not prog..

listen to bangkok and firegarden suite before deciding whether steve is prog or not.  and the comments about him playing with feel are irrelevant, there are 100s of bands on this site that "play with no feel" imo.  to me, prog is eclectic rock that cannot be catergorized any other way, and usually features virtuoso musicianship.  is that not steve?
