OK then what's your favourite keyboard in prog music? I've picked what I think are the four mainstays - the Moog, Mellotron, the Hammond, and let's not forget the good old piano.  Which is best and why? Some examples? Or is there another keyboard that springs to mind (e.g. Fender Rhodes? Pipe organ?)

For me, I think I'd have to go with the Hammond because of its wonderful sound and versatility,it can be used either to solo or to play harmony/melody; the Mellotron has wonderful sound(s)  but I don't think of it as an instrument for soloing on, whereas the Moog is perhaps best for solo's....what do you think?

I went foor Moog (or other synth) cuz I love a good synth solo, and these days you can get a synth to sound like anything. i do love a bit of Hammond though!

My 4 favourite instruments, I suppose, the piano, the Hammond, the Moog and the Mellotron. I really love the Moog and the Mellotron, I even derived my PA-ID from it, but to be really honest: I think nothing beats the organ for me, and the piano is probably nr. 2.

Maybe I should change my name to Pianorgan III  . But no, I love the Moogs and the Trons...

I went for the Mellotron because it looked lonely with no votes. Having said that, I love a bit of Moog and there's nothing quite like a Hammond.

Also, a piano is really nice.

So basically anything apart from a cheesy synth or an organ that sounds like it came from a cinema.

My favourite bit of keyboards is probably Rick Wakeman's church organ at the end of "I get up I get down". Awesome.

Moog... it's my favourite keyboard sound. I'm a keyboardist, and synth is my favourite, although they're all fun to play (sadly, I've never been able to get my hands on a real Mellotron or Minimoog, but I can still dream ).

A really good solo(Moog or synth) beats both Hammond and Mellotron. A nice piano, like the intro to Firth of Fifth, comes in as second.

Yes,Sir!

Mellotron is my favourite keyboard too.I am grateful and pray the lord every day to own a working one. My second choice is a Hammond organ with a leslie and my third is a Moog but another synth I would like to own is an ARP Odyssey(an amazing synth, better than a minimoog IMHO but less fat).

I have to say the Moog is my favorite out of all of the keyboards.  I love Trilogy's show-casing of the Moog in the middle part of the song; good times.
Can you tell me where my country lies?

Ah, yes, the Farfisa. Very 60s. I used to have one. Hammered the s**t out of it!

I can't agree with lumping 'other synths' in with the Moog. All 'ground-base' synths had (have) their own unique voice and are quite distinct as separate instruments. Then you get the more modern super-wizzo wave-sampling synths etc etc which can sound like practically anything you want them too (well .... nearly!) so it's a bit of a minefield.

Anyway, much as I love the Hammond, especially coupled with Lesley, I simply must vote again for the Tron.

Sorry for my ignorance, but could you guys explain how does Moog and Hammond sound? I mean point out the songs.

For example, Band X has song X where you can clearly hear Moog, etc.

Just a little rectification here, the synthesizer solo in the song "In the Cage" from Genesis is actually done on a ARP Pro Soloist and not on a Moog.Tony Banks got his first Moog synthesizer around the time of "And then there were three" where he get his hands on a Polymoog.Actually, he never use a Minimoog in the early Genesis stuff.
