OK then what's your favourite keyboard in prog music? I've picked what
I think are the four mainstays - the Moog, Mellotron, the Hammond, and
let's not forget the good old piano. Which is best and why? Some
examples? Or is there another keyboard that springs to mind (e.g.
Fender Rhodes? Pipe organ?)
For me, I think I'd have to go with the Hammond because of its
wonderful sound and versatility,it can be used either to solo or to
play harmony/melody; the Mellotron has wonderful sound(s) but I
don't think of it as an instrument for soloing on, whereas the Moog is
perhaps best for solo's....what do you think?

I went foor Moog (or other synth) cuz I love a good synth solo, and these days you can get a synth to sound like anything. i do love a bit of Hammond though!

My 4 favourite instruments, I suppose, the piano, the Hammond, the Moog and the Mellotron. I really love the Moog and the Mellotron, I even derived my PA-ID from it, but to be really honest: I think nothing beats the organ for me, and the piano is probably nr. 2.
Maybe I should change my name to Pianorgan III . But no, I love the Moogs and the Trons...

I went for the Mellotron because it looked lonely with no votes. Having said that, I love a bit of Moog and there's nothing quite like a Hammond.
Also, a piano is really nice.
So basically anything apart from a cheesy synth or an organ that sounds like it came from a cinema.
My favourite bit of keyboards is probably Rick Wakeman's church organ at the end of "I get up I get down". Awesome.

Moog... it's my favourite keyboard sound. I'm a keyboardist, and synth
is my favourite, although they're all fun to play (sadly, I've never
been able to get my hands on a real Mellotron or Minimoog, but I can
still dream ).

A really good solo(Moog or synth) beats both Hammond and Mellotron. A nice piano, like the intro to Firth of Fifth, comes in as second.

Yes,Sir!![](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Mellotron is my favourite keyboard too.I am grateful and pray the lord every day to own a working one. My second choice is a Hammond organ with a leslie and my third is a Moog but another synth I would like to own is an ARP Odyssey(an amazing synth, better than a minimoog IMHO but less fat).

I have to say the Moog is my favorite out of all of the keyboards. I love Trilogy's show-casing of the Moog in the middle part of the song; good times.

For prog withou a doubt the moog, for the stunning solos provided by these synths.
For rock in general, hammond

Ah, yes, the Farfisa. Very 60s. I used to have one. Hammered the s**t out of it!
I can't agree with lumping 'other synths' in with the Moog. All 'ground-base' synths had (have) their own unique voice and are quite distinct as separate instruments. Then you get the more modern super-wizzo wave-sampling synths etc etc which can sound like practically anything you want them too (well .... nearly!) so it's a bit of a minefield.
Anyway, much as I love the Hammond, especially coupled with Lesley, I simply must vote again for the Tron.

Sorry for my ignorance, but could you guys explain how does Moog and Hammond sound? I mean point out the songs.
For example, Band X has song X where you can clearly hear Moog, etc.

The best way to know which is the Moog and the Hammond is listening to them. Hammond - Hear the song Hoedown bu Elp...after that you´ll know ![](smileys/smiley2.gif) Moog - In the cage from Genesis is a really good example...my favorite actually![](smileys/smiley9.gif) ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Definitely Hammon organ ! A lot of prog masterpices wouldn't have been created if Hammond hadn't been invented. Think about ELP-Tarkus, Yes-Roundabout, VDGG-Killer, Atomic Rooster-Tomorrow Night, Trace-King-Bird...

Maybe its because you never listen, you talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, ....and talk. Your King Crimson picture is very nice![](smileys/smiley32.gif) ![](smileys/smiley32.gif) But it would be nicer if Fripp didnt kicked them out![](smileys/smiley5.gif) (it seems like a miracle to me that he only kicked trey gunn out in this period) And by the way, Steve "ET" Howe may be ugly, but he has fellings too !

As a keyboardist, I enjoy playing a (well-maintained) piano the best...the subtlety of tone coupled with the fact that it is a purely acoustic instrument really makes you feel "at one" with the instrument. That said, I voted for the Hammond...because it's ballsy, ever-evolving and idiosyncratic - capable of creating anything from a moody pad to an over-driven "in-your-case" lead...perfectly suited for prog, and no one (in prog) played that bad-boy better that Mr. Emerson! ![](smileys/smiley1.gif)

I love all of the choices. Narrowing it down to one I'd have to choose the moog. I love that mellotron though.

There's a lot of them!
Among the well known band,Yes used a lot of minimoog in all of their classic albums from Fragile(1971) until Drama(1980).Emerson,Lake and Palmer also used a lot of Moog, first a modular synth from the first eponymous album(1970),The "Lucky man" solo at the end of the song is a good example and Tarkus(1971).He add a minimoog around the time of Trilogy(1972) and use it in addition of his big modular system. There's a lot of others but are too numerous for naming all.
If you know italian progressive band PFM,all of their early albums have a lot of minimoog.Il Balletto di Bronzo "Y's" is full of mental minimoog solos.Museo Rosenbach "Zarathrustra" is also very well equiped with beautiful Moog lines.Like above, there's a lot of others examples, browsing among the albums review is also a good way for finding others.![](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Hope that help.

I am exactly the same Chopper, I like a bit of variation on a record, whether it be hammond, Moog, Arp, Piano, Mellowtron, whatever, as long as it's well played and inventive.

I love keyboards in general, but my vote goes to the mighty Hammond. The Mellotron is in a way a symbol of symphonic prog, and the piano is one of the most versatile instruments ever. The Moog is the one I'm least keen on, though there are many great examples of its use by accomplished musicians (Emerson's solo on the live version of "Aquatarkus" for one).

This is like having to choose your favorite child! Jeez. I guess, if I was forced to choose I would pick the hammond organ. Mainly because I like my hard rock music like Deep Purple and Uriah Heep and I just can't see those bands playing a synth or mellotron only.
