    Posted: September 02 2020 at 18:41

This week’s theme: 2 to 4 minute songs with vocals. Perhaps it’s a prog thing, but most of our suggestions tend to be longer tunes. In the last poll, only 3 of the 16 songs are between 2 and 4 minutes, and one is an instrumental. So, let’s see what we like that delivers in a short amount of time.

Rules:

1. Songs must have vocals and be between 2 to 4 minutes in length. Videos can run longer, just the song itself must be in that range.

2. Artist must not be on the PA database.

3. Nominate a song and include a video. Optionally, you can include a couple of alternates.

4. Nominating will be kept open at least until next Wednesday, Sept. 9.  So, no rush. Lorenzo will start the next one on Sept. 14.

5. Voting starts when I get all selections in the poll and goes on until whenever.

6. Vote for three selections but not your own.

[optional history lesson] Why 2 to 4 minutes? The vast majority of 45 rpm singles over its history were 3 to 4 minutes and characterized as the ideal length of time for a single. It was thought of as the right digestible amount of music, though it partially came about due to technology. The 7-inch 45 rpm single needed enough space between grooves or else the stylus could skip, so 4 minutes was initially a physical limitation. The 45 rpm single was the popular format for radio play and the juke boxes. Manufacturing improved over the years, and there was a bit of controversy when the first ‘long’ single was released, Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” at 6 minutes! John Lennon once asked producer George Martin what the maximum length could be on a 45 and came up with 7 minutes, 11 seconds, the length of  “Hey Jude.” (Reportedly, one the longest sides on a 45 rpm single is the B-side track, “Lunar Sea” by Camel – go prog!) The 45 peaked in popularity in the 70’s (200 million singles sold in ’74) and then faded out in the 80’s with the major labels stopping production by 1990. Note that music you select in no way needs to be from the 70’s or earlier or needs to be a ‘single.’ Style could be anything you want.

I am going with 3 different tracks to start.

First up is a song I first heard a few weeks ago for the first time on public radio. The song was released in 2013 and it’s a reworking of song from the ‘40s. It’s called “Beirut,” and the singer Yasmine Hamdan was interviewed in relation to the explosion that occurred, and I was immediately struck by it and got the album. I almost suggested it last week and thought about it again when listening to one of the tracks by Orange Blossom.

Next, we get some funky soul by a band from the 90’s called Dag. They released two excellent albums in this genre before being dropped by their label and disappearing. This is the title track from their debut album, “Righteous”. I feel like this can be reinterpreted for our current times, channeling the spirit of greats like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye.

Finally, this a total one-hit, one song wonder for me. If you listened album rock radio in 1980, you have heard this song. It’s the only song I have by Donnie Iris (off a compilation), and I have no interest in checking out his other songs, but it gets regular play whenever I go on a long road trip. It’s one of those one-off songs I’ve had on a mixtape back in the day and now on a digital playlist now. A solid rock song, “Ah, Leah”.

CocoRosie - “Lemonade”

I am going to chime in early on this one.  I still have Micky's entry from the last one echoing.  These are some others that have stuck with me all my life.

First, The Kinks "The Way Love Used To Be"  Only 2:06 A perfect love song.

Next, another perfect love song.  Gordon Lightfoot's "Affair on 8th Avenue"  3:27

And now for something completely different.  The Texas psychedelia of Fever Tree.  "The Man Who Paints The Pictures" 2:34

Nice theme! My first proposal is from one of my absolute favourite non-prog bands that I already introduced when it was about catchiness, but there Foals stole the show. Now this one is super-catchy, too, let's see whether they make it this time (but there will be competition again). Fun fact 1: Kavus Torabi and the late great Tim Smith (Cardiacs) share(d) my love for this band. Fun fact 2: They have a cool song called "Prog", but that's 4:03 - shame!

OK fast follow up with a second one. This is a first actually, I'm proposing something from my chosen country to live in, but quite different from the poetic singer songwriter tradition that raff and Lorenzo have exposed us to up to now. I'm not expecting a hip hop theme anytime soon so I can use this here... and I liked it already before I was able to appreciate the lyrics (super catchy this one as well). The guy has made an album entirely about art works, imagine that! This one says "I want to be like the heads of Modigliani" and lots of other things, see

I was familiar with Caparezza's name, but not yet with his music, and was very impressed by the song. The video is stunning, and the lyrics very clever. Though not a fan of hip-hop, I can appreciate this Italian take on the genre, where you can definitely hear the influence of our musical tradition. I do remember that particular episode - the Modigliani heads hoaxLOL. Art critics really fell for it!

Anyway, I've been thinking about songs to submit for this poll, and already have a couple bookmarked. Will post them later today!

Prompted by mathman's "videos don't work" post the first two I listened to are Little Light and the Morten Harket one. Wasn't aware that Harket has done solo work. As one should expect this is quality pop music that I'd probably rate something like 7/10, good stuff. Little Light isn't really my cup of tea I must say.

Three of my favorite songs from childhood:

...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

Morten has got 5 solo albums, one is in his native language, I did not listen to that one I'm afraid. Embarrassed

A question:

is it possible to post a song shorter than 3 minutes?

Edited by jamesbaldwin - September 03 2020 at 07:47
Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Oh, heck, I broke the rules again.  I was looking at under 4 minutes to make my selections.....I can do 2 others if I should.

Choosing songs I like that are 3 to 4 minutes in length was a challenge. Then I read that songs under 3 minutes are also allowed, so I included Morgan Delt - Tropicana at just over 2 minutes. Anyway, here is five songs I've chosen:

Devo - Shrivel Up

Morgan Delt - Tropicana

Van Halen - Atomic Punk

The Orb - Toxygene (7" Edit)

Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I would like to get definitive word back from George if under 3 minutes will indeed be allowed (I know he said this, but since it was an error on my part, I want to be sure that it's OK).  I can certainly come up with 2 others that fit the bill without bending the rules.

It's okay. I am not a big stickler on rules, so I'll edit my original post to 2 to 4 minutes. Thumbs Up
