I play in a Genesis tribute band, and up to this point we've been focusing on the post-Gabriel music. We're going to delve into the older stuff soon, and I wanted some opinions on what would be the most essential songs, say the top 5, that we should play? I think Supper's Ready is going to be out due to the complexity and length of the song.

The marvellous 1973 Live album has most of the best stuff. On top of that maybe the Cinema Show, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, Fly on a Windshield. If your listeners are mainly into later Genesis, they will probably love Carpet Crawlers.

3. Carpet Crawlers 4. The Musical Box 5. I Know What I Like That would be my set if Supper's Ready is disqualified. |

No Supper's Ready? Sacrilege.
Anyway, if you ask five different people you will probably get five different answers. Here is my list of five(I'll also add another five as a bonus). Nope, no "carpet crawlers" from me but I'm sure others will list it. ;) 1. Firth of Fifth (next to SR this is the most essential Genesis song imo). 2. The Musical Box 3. Watcher of the Skies 4. In the Cage (you could do what the original Genesis did with this and incorporate a medley in it) 5. Cinema Show/ Aisle of Plenty (really one track imo) Bonus 5: The Knife The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (title track) Fountain of Sulmacis Stagnation (very under rated imo) Return of the Giant Hogweed Just missed the list: Dancing with the moonlit knight

Pretty much this, I'm not sure I would even want to hear Suppers' Ready. I suspect that would eat up 80% of your allotted set time.

Watcher of The Skies
Firth of Fifth The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway In the Cage The Musical Box Also you may want to conciser doing some abbreviated sections of Supper's Ready. That end section is so powerful. May be incorporate it in to a melody with something else. Edited by Argo2112 - January 29 2019 at 13:35 |

You really should try 'Twilight Alehouse' and 'Happy the Man'. Just because nobody else does.

If I could see Genesis in concert,
I'd like to listen: 1. Looking for Someone, 2. White Mountain 3 The Knife (Trespass is a great album) 4. The Return of the Giant Hogweed (Musical Box is a must but in my opinion is overrated) 5. Time Table 6. Can-Utility and the Coastliners (the last one is for me the best track of Foxtrot) 7. Dancing with the Moonlight Knight 8. Firth of Fifth. 9. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 10. The Carpet Crawlers |

Because you said Gabriel's period: The Return of the Giant Hogweed Looking For Someone The Musical Box Dancing With The Moonlit Knight The Knife Had you asked for Genesis as a whole, regardless of period, it would have been: Blood on the Rooftops The Return of the Giant Hogweed Ripples Follow You Follow Me Dance on a Volcano Edited by LAM-SGC - January 29 2019 at 20:59 |

My list of very favourites from Genesis is mostly from their classic line-up, and it includes:
- The Musical Box. - Supper's Ready (yeah, I know, you said you wouldn't play it anyway). - Dancing with the Moonlit Knight. - Firth of Fifth. - The Cinema Show. I might add as close ones, The Knife (because of the live version with the classic line-up) and In the Cage. Yet, if you are thinking about pleasing the more pop oriented fans of the 80's stuff too, then you might consider including "I know what I like". |

Actually, they managed to miss most of my favourite songs on that one... not from the performance, as I understand it, but they left those ones out in order to make space for a single LP album instead of a double (which is the way I belive they should have released it, with the complete show). |

The Knife (great organ riff influenced heavily by Keith Emerson) Return Of Giant Hogweed ( the piano break is a killer) Watcher Of The Skies (Mellotron!) Firth of Fifth (the piano intro is a 'bugger' though. I saw another Genesis tribute band struggle to get this out because of it) In The Cage ( just for the sunshine in my stomach lyric if nothing else)
