There is no such thing as "objective best".

and here's my subjective opinion: They are not, infact.. they are over their peak(Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence) and have felt, and still are falling since then.

But man, they've put out really good stuff over the years!

Dream Theater is a great band, but they are NOTgonna be the greatest prog band ever.

The title "Greatest Prog Band Ever!!!" is only fitting to the prog master bands from the 70's, like Genesis, Gentle Giant, Yes, ELP, VDGG, King Crimson etc. IMO

Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends... the battle of the GIANTS!!!

I'd put my money on Genesis, Yes or ELP,

On Floyd, Gentle Giant or KC,

but certainly not on ... (to give a hint on the last word: it rhymes  )

What the hell are you talking about. ELP are the greatest. Can be. Now, for ever!

Well I doubt that because I love Dt, but wouldn't consider them GOING TO THE BEST BECAUSE they are already the best AT THE MOMENT. This is not the 70s. If they were in the 70s, they still would be NUMMBER #1

No... not by a longshot. I love the band tremendously, but the best ever? Yeah, right.

Who SERIOUSLY voted yes?!... I mean DT might have a lot of skills, and did a couple of good songs, but the greatest ever?! This is pointless discussion...

I dare anyone who voted yes to this to tell me 10 other prog bands other than prog-metal ones...

I voted "No" because they are already there :) They are definitely my favorite Progressive artist, sorry Traditional Prog artists, but DT has already shattered it.

Conclusion: 70's hard rock IS heavy metal.

These guys invented metal and coined the phrase.

Hard rock/heavy rock/heavy metal were pretty much interchangeable in the 70's.

If 70's bands (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath...) weren't heavy metal then 80's (and late 70's) bands wouldn't be called NEW WAVE of Brithish Heavy Metal!
