I saw a similar poll in another forum: Which is the best between these albums?

Trespass - The Yes Album:

Nursery Crime - Fragile:

Foxtrot - Close To The Edge:

Selling England By The Pound - Relayer:

The Lamb... - Tales From Topographic...:

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday:

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One:

And Then There Were Three - Tormato:

Duke - Drama:

Hi Marcelo:

This may surprise you but although I love prog, eat prog and dream prog overnight (like most people on this forum), I've never really taken to YES as much as other similar bands (GENESIS, CAMEL, etc). So my answer is simple: GENESIS all the way!

I imagine you've seen that poll on the 'Genesis Talk Shop' - a fine forum indeed. Not as eclectic as Prog Archives but fun.

Cheers

Hibou

Trespass - The Yes Album: TRESPASS

Nursery Crime - Fragile: NURSETY CRYME

Foxtrot - Close To The Edge: FOXTROT

Selling England By The Pound - Relayer: SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND

The Lamb... - Tales From Topographic...: THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday: A TRICK OF THE TAIL

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One: WIND & WUTHERING

And Then There Were Three - Tormato: TORMATO

Duke - Drama: DRAMA

Almost everything from Genesis, except the 3 men era which IMHO sucks from start to end.

Yes, Hibou, a big surprise! Try a little bit with Yes   ... I saw the poll (similar, not the same) in a South American prog site, "Progresiva 70", where Yes was the winner.

A funny poll. These are my choices:

Trespass - The Yes Album: THE YES ALBUM. I never really liked Trespass, maybe because of the bad production quality

Nursery Crime - Fragile: FRAGILE

Foxtrot - Close To The Edge: CLOSE TO THE EDGE. There's no doubt it may be the most important and talked about record of prog.

Selling England By The Pound - Relayer: SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND. It's a very moving album, while I never got into Sound Chaser.

The Lamb... - Tales From Topographic...: THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. Both are overlong, but Tales is MUCH overlong

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday: A TRICK OF THE TAIL. One of my favourite Genesis albums: I love its mood.

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One: AAARRRGG!!! THIS IS HARD... CAN'T DECIDE.

And Then There Were Three - Tormato: NOT LISTENED TO THE GENESIS ONE

Duke - Drama: DRAMA. Sometimes, my favourite Yes album

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday: A TRICK OF THE TAIL

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One: WIND & WUTHERING

Interesting question.My choices in bold:

Trespass - The Yes Album:

Nursery Crime - Fragile:

Foxtrot - Close To The Edge:

Selling England By The Pound - Relayer:

The Lamb... - Tales From Topographic...:

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday:

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One:

And Then There Were Three - Tormato:

Duke - Drama:

You can't beat early Yes but then Genesis developed through the seventies while Yes became a bit of a 'self parody' in later years IMO.

Hm, how to compare one kind of genius with another...

Trespass - The Yes Album: The Yes Album  (scores 9 against 6)

Nursery Crime - Fragile: Fragile (scores 8 against 7)

Foxtrot - Close To The Edge: Draw (scores 10 against 10)

Selling England By The Pound - Relayer: Relayer (scores 10 against 9)

The Lamb... - Tales From Topographic...: Tales From Topographic (scores 9 against 8)

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday: A TRICK OF THE TAIL (scores 9 against 6)

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One: WIND & WUTHERING (scores 9 against 8)

And Then There Were Three - Tormato: TORMATO (scores 7 against 6)

Duke - Drama: DRAMA (scores 8 against 5)

This means that to me Yes wins 6 against 2 and 1 draw.

The overall rank makes this a bit more open:

Close To The Edge - 10

Foxtrot - 10

Relayer - 10

A Trick Of The Tail - 9

Selling England By The Pound - 9

Tales From Topographic...-  9

Wind And Wuthering - 9

Drama - 8

Fragile - 8

Going For The One - 8

The Lamb... - 8

The Yes Album - 8

Nursery Crime - 7

Tormato - 7

Trespass - 6

Yesterday - 6

And Then There Were Three - 6

Duke - 5

Yes total: 74 (average 8.2)

Genesis total: 68 (average (7.6)

Trespass - The Yes Album: Very hard to chose, but The Yes album just! I love Trespass but the Yes album has so many classic Yes tracks.

Nursery Crime - Fragile: Nursery Cryme. Both have 3 epic pieces, but Fragile is spoiled by the self indulgence of the solo spots.

Foxtrot - Close To The Edge: Too close to split these two, if forced, Close to the edge this time, but so unfair having to chose between them!

Selling England By The Pound - Relayer: Each has a spoiler - Battle of Epping Forest and Sound chaser. Selling England gets my vote for Firth of Fifth and Cinema Show, but Gates of Delerium is magnificent.

The Lamb... - Tales From Topographic...: Easy one this one, Tales by a country mile. The Lamb was disappointign, but I'm one of the Tales is great brigade.

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday: Got to be Trick of the Tail, Yesterdays wasn't even an original album.

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One: Tough one again, I love them both, Going for the one I think, for Awaken, but it could just as easily have been W&W for One for the Vine.

And Then There Were Three - Tormato: And then there were three easily. Tormato was very disappointing.

Duke - Drama: Drama. Duke has some great tracks (Los Endos) and a few duffers. Drama is a good Yes album, end to end.

Trespass - The Yes Album: The Yes Album

Nursery Crime - Fragile: Fragile

Foxtrot - Close To The Edge: CTTE

Selling England By The Pound - Relayer: Seling England

The Lamb... - Tales From Topographic...: The Lamb

A Trick Of The Tail - Yesterday: Trick

Wind And Wuthering - Going For The One: Going for the One

And Then There Were Three - Tormato: Three

Duke - Drama: Drama

If you match the best Yes has to offer, they beat out Genesis everytime. Genesis' best beats out Yes' weak stuff.

Now compare players: (only the classic line-ups to save time)

(Voice) Peter Gabriel - Jon Anderson (Close match - edge - Anderson)

(Bass) Mike Rutherford - Chris Squire (Duh - Squire)

(Guitars) Steve Hackett - Steve Howe (EVEN - Just don't let 'em record together)

(Drums) Phil Collins - Bill Bruford (silly proghole - drums are for Bill)

(Keys) Tony Banks - Rick Wakeman (Wakeman)

Yeah Baby

I hate to be a party pooper, but...

Aren't these types of polls a little like the old "apples and oranges" axiom?  For example, what does the word "best" mean here?  I'm not trying to be contrary, but you might as well ask me if I like Mozart better than Beethoven.  Both wrote "classical" music, both were geniuses, both influenced others.  But ultimately they wrote different - but equally good - music.

Peace.

ErmmEr, you must be thinking of another track, Easy ol' chum. "Los Endos" is on A Trick of the Tale, not Duke.

(I agree with your choice, though.)Approve
