I voted for So, because I think it's one of the few times an artist can achieve commercial success without selling out artistically. I think it's a great achievement. But then again, I, III & Up are all fantastic albums: there is something worth listening to on all his albums.
I also bought his DVD "Play" today (the Videos). Great!

Birdy is a re-hash of some tracks from PG III, IV and some other stuff
(Slow Water I believe was used on a Brain Eno album) but the twist he
gives to the tunes are actually quite invetive and for a while, the
Birdy album was a constant presence in my walkman - that's a portable
tape cassette player for all of those of you out there born after 1988 
Mathew Modine was quite good in the film if I remember.

PG III gets my vote - a good balance between great songwriting and experimentation. There's not a lot of his solo stuff that I don't like, though.

Us is my favourite for "mathematical" reasons, because it's the only album by Gabriel that has no weak tracks. For me Us is an artistically successful mixture of catchy and ambitious music and his most personal lyrics. However Up is probably the most diverse of his efforts so far, gathering together all the colours of his musical palette. I also think very highly of I (incredible amount of diversity too), IV (revolutionary), So (superb pop) and Passion (an emotional soundtrack). III is good too, of course, but some of the songs there are too simple for my taste.

I can remember hearing Solsbury Hill played by a local
band called the Joanne Dodds Band before I even knew it was a Peter
Gabriel song. Awesome. I would go hear them just to hear
that song.

I love all of Gabriel's solo albums. He is one of the few artists that you can
say didn't sell out. Not only didn't sell out, but didnt put forth a bad album
(at least IMO.)

I - really good; god bless bob ezrin; sort of time specific with 70's greats (hunter, schwartzberg, wagner); "here comes the flood", "moribund", "humdrum", the list goes on and on; big and bloated maybe...
III - another great one; ground breaking studio techniques (especially drums); "intruder", "family snapshot", "not one of us"; pretty darn good...
security/IV - talk about your ground breaking production, you still hear this one on trailers today; "lay your hands on me", "family and the fishing net"; I'd buy it again...
but II - you've got the most sympathetic producer: fripp; there's almost a punk ethic; one great song after another, even up to the crappy finales of "animal magic" and "home sweet home"; his voice never sounded more natural and aggressive(expressive?); my vote for the best; "white shadow", "indigo", "flotsam and jetsam", "on the air", etc, etc...
oh yeah, he put out some commercial crap after that, which seemed to appeal to dave matthews fans and people that felt they were discovering pg (best new artist).
LONG LIVE HOGWEED!!
