Personally I prefer Passions (1989) - with no any doubt.

Let me present to you the quote from my personal letter to the other Participant of our Forum - Guillermo:

I really suggest you to listen Passions (1989)! This is the Masterpiece, at least! I consider this album as the best record of all 80s, it’s on my top-10 of all the records I ever listened. The album is practically instrumental (with choir in one song and Gabriel’s voice without words in another one track), full of absolutely original ideas and different instruments (above 50 musicians worked with this album, Gabriel worked 3 years for it travelling across the whole world and searching and learning musical traditions of many nations – Arabs, Armenians, Turks, Afgans, Zulus, Indians, American-Indians, etc...), tightly contained by real feelings and passions!

A year after release it was based as the soundtrack for very clever movie by Martin Scorcese The Last Temptation Of Christ.

I voted for III. Not only is it his best recording, it's also one of the best albums ever.

I picked 1 because it has the most "genesisy" sound....yup, im biased. But it also has Robert Fripp!

"Salsbury Hill" and "Here Comes The Flood" also happen to be his best songs, IMO.

I cannot say that I leke all the 3rd album very much. To my opinion, his general worth is that here Gabriel has started to make principally new music - a kind of nobody performed before. He has created two basic things in 1980: the experiments with so called "ethnic" music and the experiments with modern sound (in innovative and intellectual way - unlike different new-wave, disco and electro-pop bands).

Though there are two brilliant tracks on the album too. I mean FAMILY SNAPSHOT and BIKO. LEAD A NORMAL LIFE, THROUGH THE WIRE and NO SELF CONTROL are all great too...

The 1st album by Gabriel is my personal 3rd favorite one after PASSIONS and SECURITY. I cannot say that it's close to Genesis - it's maybe the closest to pure Progressive Rock at all among peter's records. HERE COMES THE FLOOD is my very favorite composition in all the Gabriel's discography, and DOWN TO THE DOLCE VITA is one of the most favorite too

PG III was the very first album I bought with my own money. I played it to death and I can still pick up new things even today.

Such is my prog training that I felt genuinely ashamed to say "So" ... I rifled through my head for all manner of excuses to chose another album ... thought of all the great songs he's done ... but the truth is it will always be So.

Pete is one of my fav artists, and I love all his albums.

But I chose passion, I bought it the other day and it's just so inspiring.

Wow, at last a PG solo thread - they hardly ever appear, I was getting the impression he was persona non grata (or may progger non grata) after 1975!

For me it's hard to separate III, Us and Passion - they're all outstanding albums. But I'm gonna go with Us, cause nobody else has voted for it.

Pete's had some dodgy moments (most of So and Ovo) but he is always a fascinating artist and still a vital, innovative and creative talent even as he heads into his 50s - which very, very, very few prog musicians can claim.  and I'm still p***ed off I couldn't make it to see him tour last summer.

So hats off to Mr G - a true maverick and an outstanding talent and one of my all-time faves

First I wanna say that all his efforts including Us and So are brilliant.  Pete is such an underated guy and isn't taken seriously by proggers because he had a #1 hit with Sledge Hammer.  That is very sad. "So" has some greast songs on it.

III gets my vote. After that "Security" & then "So"

The only one I have had a hard time listening to is "II".  Great songs but Pete has some really annoying effects on his vocals that just irritate me to death. Anyone feel the same?

I know it's hard to discount all his early albums, but I voted for 'Us', with 'Up' being a close second as my favourite. That being said, 'So' as commercial as it is/was, is still his finest.

I absolutely agree that Gabriel is very underrated by Progressive Fans. It's maybe because he performs his own unusual Progressive Rock, which is very unsimilar to the traditional kind of Progressive. Look out, Gabriel is just not so simple and light-weighed as it seems from the 1st sight (even at his So and Us!)...

Frankly speaking, Gabriel in couple with Hammill is my most favorite musician, the closest to my nature I may say... Every time - being the Genesis's participant or solo-author-soloist - Peter Gabriel always created very intelligent, thoughtful, innovative and sincere Music.

BTW, Genesis also had #1 hit with LAND OF CONFUSION

I voted for So, because I think it's one of the few times an artist can achieve commercial success without selling out artistically. I think it's a great achievement. But then again, I, III & Up are all fantastic albums: there is something worth listening to on all his albums.

I also bought his DVD "Play" today (the Videos). Great!

Birdy is a re-hash of some tracks from PG III, IV and some other stuff (Slow Water I believe was used on a Brain Eno album) but the twist he gives to the tunes are actually quite invetive and for a while, the Birdy album was a constant presence in my walkman - that's a portable tape cassette player for all of those of you out there born after 1988

Mathew Modine was quite good in the film if I remember.

Us is my favourite for "mathematical" reasons, because it's the only album by Gabriel that has no weak tracks. For me Us is an artistically successful mixture of catchy and ambitious music and his most personal lyrics. However Up is probably the most diverse of his efforts so far, gathering together all the colours of his musical palette. I also think very highly of I (incredible amount of diversity too), IV (revolutionary), So (superb pop) and Passion (an emotional soundtrack). III is good too, of course, but some of the songs there are too simple for my taste.

I love all of Gabriel's solo albums. He is one of the few artists that you can
say didn't sell out. Not only didn't sell out, but didnt put forth a bad album
(at least IMO.)

I - really good; god bless bob ezrin; sort of time specific with 70's greats (hunter, schwartzberg, wagner); "here comes the flood", "moribund", "humdrum", the list goes on and on; big and bloated maybe...

III - another great one; ground breaking studio techniques (especially drums); "intruder", "family snapshot", "not one of us"; pretty darn good...

security/IV - talk about your ground breaking production, you still hear this one on trailers today; "lay your hands on me", "family and the fishing net"; I'd buy it again...

but II - you've got the most sympathetic producer: fripp; there's almost a punk ethic; one great song after another, even up to the crappy finales of "animal magic" and "home sweet home"; his voice never sounded more natural and aggressive(expressive?); my vote for the best; "white shadow", "indigo", "flotsam and jetsam", "on the air", etc, etc...

oh yeah, he put out some commercial crap after that, which seemed to appeal to dave matthews fans and people that felt they were discovering pg (best new artist).

LONG LIVE HOGWEED!!

I'm going to take that you've never heard UP. Or passion. Since you said after
PG IV it was poppy crap. And So and US are not poppy crap. Maybe pop but
not crap.

I voted for 1 because PG used the wonderful guitarists Steve Hunter & Dick Wagner on that album. However I own and love all of them.SH & DW some of the best rock guitarists I ever heard.Alice Cooper used them on Welcome to my Nightmare and Lou Reed used them on Rock'n'Roll Animal. The solo on Dolce Vita gets me every time.

Oh Yeah, "UP". It seems that he has taken to wearing a leather glove on one hand. And yes I have been listening (and praying). Post-mortems take place...and what can one do! All I want is a resurrection...and I don't think age is an excuse. Does Gabriel think that banaliity can pass for inspiration. He didn't used to think "so". But now it seems to pay the bills. And I've been waiting since 1980...

I felt compelled to vote for the black sheep of the catalogue:
"White Shadow" is my favorite PG song, and I just love the garage-y, grungy sound of this one overall, especially Animal Magic, Perspective, DIY and Exposure.  Mother of Violence and Indigo are really beautiful songs too.  It's also his best album cover, IMO.

Of course, they are all great, but II/Scratch has a special place for me.
