I just re-read some of his reviews and they have some merit apart from that they are all negative.  I chuckle at and agree with some of his observations, even on those albums I rate much better.  Like for instance, I always thought "Nude" was mostly light background music but still gave it 3 stars because of a handful of great tracks.  I don't like Supertramp but agree that Crisis doesn't even meet their standards.  To tell the truth, I'd rather read Papa pork than another fanboy review o (take your pick)..Much more entertaining, more concise, and at least as insightful.  But yeah I get it doesn't make the site look great unless it's read as parody, which I believe it is.

To be fair, while PapaPork's reviews are negative and cynical, they're not worse than Sean Trane's negative reviews. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At least PapaPork has a style. A lot of the recent overwhelmingly positive reviews of (mostly contemporary) albums on PA are stylistically very bland imo. (example)

This is uncalled for... Sean has many friends here for quite a long time. Huge list of ratings and reviews.

Why do you do sh*t like this???
Ouch

That raises a good point actually.  Most of us improve in our reviewing over time.  I'm embarrassed by some of my early reviews.  Papa Pork could be finding his style.  Or this could be it.  And I've read much worse.  At least he is somewhat unique.

Just to clarify. I'm only comparing Trane's brief negative reviews to PapaPork's writings.

Keneth had a point. I'll add that if you review an album that you don't like, your wording might potentially end up as less eloquent and elaborate, just by the nature of your opinion. At the end of the day, we as people, get angry when we don't like something. Right? Negative emotions are bound to be present in negative reviews, rather than the positive ones.

I also have suspicions that PapaPork is trying to copy the The Angry Video Game Nerd formula but for prog albums. You know AVGN? AVGN is a character who reviews vintage/classic video games he doesn't like and gets angry at them.

I don’t get angry if I don’t like music -  I just ignore it. If I did there’d be hundreds of negative prog metal reviews by me on here by now……

I don't get angry if I don't like an album. I actually rarely listen-through to albums that don't appeal as I usually stream before I buy. I watch through films and TV shows I don't like sometimes and not liking it does not make me angry either. Art can be provocative but would rarely anger me. It can annoy me. I very rarely get angry, period. I'm much more likely to get sad *insert image of sad kitty to demonstrate*. I guess if I felt I was pressured to listen to an album that I really dislike then I might be upset/mad at the one who pressured me -- annoyed. And sure some music really annoys me. And I guess for some if they come in with too high or the wrong expectations they might get quite upset. If they feel let down somehow, but that's not the artists fault really unless the albums was made-to-order, so get upset with yourself. Due to site work I used to listen to quite a lot of music that did not appeal to me, but I could evaluate it without getting upset -- my purpose of listening was not for enjoyment and whether I enjoyed it was irrelevant to if it fit PA. In 2004/2005 I did buy a number of CDs that I regretted having purchased (one by Spock's Beard, another by Transatlantic, The Flower Kings, Porcupine Tree and late Gentle Giant, but that was my fault).

While I don't normally feel angry when writing a review of something I don't like, I agree that most of Papa Pork's reviews do convey anger, but that might be part of his act

I think we should distinguish between REVIEWS and RANTS. Many are the latter and really are pointless other than to cast more power for a rating. If anyone is hung up on ratings to that degree they really need to get a life!

I'm convinced that it's an act. One might well call it trolling. While I often may err on the side of being too tolerant/ accepting (and other times not enough), I totally get why others strongly believe that they should be gone, and why if it is indeed trolling, which I think it is, it goes against site policy. I so wish to make some politically charged comments right now....

This appears to be a review of the album Ghost Stories, not The Symbol Remains. I’ve PM’d the reviewer but no response

My apologies.  I posted a review on a different album that I heard.  The album in question was for Rolf Zero's "Tsunami," their second album, but I hastily clicked on this website's second album link which turned out to be

PEENAH DUTURE'S COSMIC VOYAGE.

I want to post the review on the correct page, so please do delete the one on Peenah Duture's.

^ Please PM to any Admin and ask him to delete your review. Only admins can delete reviews.

Another option (if you're familiar with the PEENAH DUTURE'S COSMIC VOYAGE album and can rate it but don't want to review it) is to edit your review (delete its text) and set desired number of stars.

Please admin - papapork needs to go - another one star rating dismissal

I’ve just sent him a PM asking why he only reviews music he dislikes. I’ll report back on anything I receive. Don’t wait with bated breath though…….

I'll just listen to the album tomorrow.

^ I edited English as a second language papers for years and I can't even read through it now. My eyes are sore and brain is weary. Fine to see it gone, but I would like to be able to get through it before talking action if I were the one to take action. I do think that those reviews are weirdly written on purpose and it's not just a case of someone with limited English language skills. Translation software is quite good these days. That is written as gibberishy.

yeah I read that one, dreadful.  Barely any references to the album itself in any detail.  The review seems to be saying that rock came out of folk and since Aqualung is folk into rock, it's mundane and worth 2 stars.  But I could be wrong  Wacko

Is it possible they don't want to use a translator and are trying to write intelligibly in English and failing?  Either way, it has to go, and maybe the writer has to be told why

^ Appreciate it if you'd do the "honours" of trying to contact the user to share your specific concerns, Ken, if you don't mind doing so. I don't think it matters if it comes from an Admin, SC, or any member if sharing concerns. Warnings usually are better left to Moderators, but I, from a strictly personal standpoint, would rather not be that official or officious at this time. That kind of thing takes its mental toll on me and I have not been doing that great health-wise (either physically or mentally, well, they work in tandem). I think someone may have tried to contact this person before, very unsure, vague and perhaps false memory of that.

Anyway here is the review as I like to preserve these before deleting.

Originally posted by thewickedfall thewickedfall wrote:

The album in concept art does not reflect their actual experiences according to their biographical background information(but I could be wrong) nor does it envelop to the spirit of progressive thinking. It feels that if I write what I want they will turn me into this album cover? As far as concerned any group with modern progression of instruments can be considered progressive as all albums have changes in sound to some extent into of which are considered progressive since the elements included unto this album are from folk but into rock. This melded variation albeit is attempting to be unique and was at the time frame for the most part of trying to transcend musical tastes from folk to rock with folk rock. In then time many fans consider it as pushing the tide of sound but truthfully rock in general can be considered a progression from folk. In this regard but truly in progressive music if considering the whole genre to be progressive as this album of folk to rock attempts at enveloping collectively into progressive from previous that it returns to classical music will never be matched in progressions of its ever changing styles of rhythm as essential music that stands all time but just did not record to modern standards from then time.

That the root of progressive music can be viewed as classical composing and music while all else are applied variants disguising the classical into the modern by the modern innovation/progression of instrument. Pushing the tide and envelop of sound has long been staple of progressive music while embracing progressive music towards this understanding means progressive music becomes a catch all to vary any sound in any musical time frame and anything in between. The progression of modern instruments can be viewed as naturally progressing sound meaning any album can be viewed in this progression of sound which does not make any album nor worst or better but falls into all people will never agree with another in progressive as it is the agreed differences that make the progressions. This album is a fan favorite album that has transcended time but all albums should in this regard and don't think one does it any better than the other since even what one considers as the worst or most horrible album is still widely available to the public.

In transcendance the album is transcendant towards music not necessarily entirely progressive but used the flow of progressive instruments from one genre to another as only they could into providing the recordings they did. Just to note the musicians from this time era that are considered as the founders of progressive music never played on purpose progressive music meaning they did not define or a musician group member from then time did not explicitly label their sound according to information as progressive. The progressive genre was created after the fact as they all played to play cause simply that is what they like spending their time doing. And so with that observance included none of the groups are considered progressive or essential since simply they never thought of themselves as progressive musicians to begin with as it is other people attempting to create the label progressive. The labels into defining music in my opinion have to be labeled by the musicians or those who participated into playing.

I deleted the review for JT's Aqualung page, but its transcendent spirit lives on here.
