I agree. A killer record, and Allan's playing fits perfectly.

^ A difficult and dangerous ascent for sure to the summit of K2 - the world's most challenging mountain - but three intrepid explorers (or PA poll voters) have already planted their flag there, against all the odds.  Smile

I'd be proud to say I own all of the albums in this poll, but the reality is I own none of them. Embarrassed

^The Book of the Dead is out of print. So if you find the original it might be pricey. However, there is a CDr available from K² leader Ken Jaquees website.

It doesn't seem right to include it in an Allan Holdsworth poll with no Allan on it. Are we going to see 6 more polls with Soft Machine? Or, you could hold off inclusing them until you get to eighth albums.

K2's Book of the Dead is the kind of album I'd climb a mountain to own, although it's currently available on CD from Amazon at £12.19 for those of us without a head for heights. Smile

Yes, I'm planning to include all of Soft Machine's albums in this series of Holdsworth polls, but I can promise we'll reach the Bundles and Land of Cockayne albums (featuring Allan Holdsworth) eventually. Smile

Wow! You lucky English folk. I guess it's only out of print in the USA, which is odd since Progrock Records, the label this release is on, is owned by people in The States.

At least, it's not called "Holdsworth's Soft Machine". Big smile

Lotsa goodies here! My favourite has to be Gazeuse! but Feels Good To Me, U.K. and The Soft Machine are not far behind at all. New Dawn and Conversation Piece are very cool too and give a good sense of what the man could sound like in a more free-form setting; this album by John Stevens isn't on Progarchives but is a really great example of it as well:
I like Velvet Darkness but it's definitely among the more uneven of his solo works, unfortunately. I don't think I've ever heard Book Of The Dead before but I'll definitely try to get to it.

I gave some love to Pierre Moerllen's Gong....that was the first time I had heard Allan's guitar playing, and I was hooked!

Bruford, UK, etc.  The man never played a wrong note.

It's very surprising to me that out of the 32 votes cast so far, Allan Holdsworth's debut solo album hasn't picked up one single vote in an Allan Holdsworth poll. Geek

Recordings done during a rehearsal session, Holdsworth therefore considers the album an unauthorized release.

Velvet Darkness is a bad record, he's right to be embarrassed by it.

That explains it then. Thumbs Up

I expect this'll be the only poll where Allan Holdsworth comes last in an Allan Holdsworth poll. Tongue
