I've been thinking about my own personal ratings for ELP's 10 studio albums and it goes like this ELP (1970) - 9/10 Tarkus (1971) - 8/10 Trilogy (1972) - 9/10 Brain Salad Surgery (1973) - 10/10 Works Volume One (1977) - 7/10 Works Volume Two (1977) - 5/10 Love Beach (1978) - 3/10 Emerson,Lake and Powell (1986) - 6/10 Black Moon (1992) -5/10 In The Hot Seat (1994) - 2/10 The first 5 - average rating 8.6 The last 5 - average rating 4.2 well you get the picture! the band was more or less done by 1978, classic case of a band going on too long past their 'sell by date'. I think other bands were able to sustain the success a little longer. ELP were always the poster band for classic era prog though so their collapse was big news. I think they never fully recovered from the negative publicity of the Works tour when they were losing a million dollars a show for those early orchestral gigs. It bit them hard.

What comes to mind is Riverside's 'Second Eye Syndrome', then also: -Dream Theater's 'Images & Words' (it is fantastic but not a full-on prog masterpiece for me), -Yes' 'The Yes Album' -Genesis' 'Trespass' -'2112' by Rush -'Script' by Marillion

I liked the title song from that Genesis album but by and large, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound, I like more.

I only heard ELP upto their Love Beach thing. I wasn't even aware that Emerson, Lake and Powell also existed.

How are any of these albums overrated is beyond me. They are all influential, inspired other musicians. They deserve all the love and appreciation they get.

The Yes Album was the first album by these giants that I loved. I had initially listened to their more blues/conventional oriented debut and was disppointed by them. Genesis' Trespass has the song 'Nursery Cryme', right? That is also one of the first Genesis songs I love though the entire album isn't as consistent. I have heard praise for Dream Theater but their prog metal leanings kept me from exploring them. I don't think I have withstood much from the metal genre except for Black Sabbath.
