Yep I didn't even like the the first couple of times I heard it. Always sounded like pub rock to me - even before I knew that was a thing.

It's never been a favourite of mine either - to me it sounds like something an up and coming high school band might have composed, whereas Highway Star, Lazy, nd Space Trucking from the same album are masterpieces.

On a side note I wonder how many times a day guitar shop staff hear those opening chords twanged by prospective instrument purchasers. [The same can probably be said for 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Sunshine of Your Love'.]

Well, ain't that a bit of a laugh? Back in '72 when Smoke on the Water dropped, pub-rock was all about tunes like this…

Hmmm...

Nobody hates Smoke on the Water more than the person who wrote it, Ritchie Blackmore.

I guess SOTW was of the moment as it told the story of the fire at the Mothers' gig, and probably composed in a short space of time without much time for embellishing or fleshing it out a bit into something grander.

That's fine. I'm not in a hating contest. I'm pleased to hear Ritchie Blackmore hates it. But I just dislike it in the similar way I loathe Roadhouse Blues, Money, Whatever You Want mm...

I believe that every great guitarist hits a rough patch at some point in their journey. Look at Robert Fripp; he's been pretty harsh about the Lizard album, calling it "unlistenable" and its fans "a bit strange." The late Allan Holdsworth hated his solo debut from 1976. But let's be real; not many guitarists make it to that legendary status. Ritchie Blackmore is one who did, and Smoke on the Water is a huge part of that legacy. That song has one of the most recognisable riffs out there. I doubt Ritchie gets any flak for how straightforward that riff is; it's probably just seen as overplayed.
Personally, I didn't put "Smoke" in my top five Deep Purple tunes. Still, that riff did exactly what it was supposed to do. I heard it at a Deep Purple concert I attended as a kid. It had the right vibe, with a killer rhythm and just enough simplicity to capture what the band was going for with that song. It turned into a hit (which surprised the band), and it stuck in our minds. It became one of those defining riffs of heavy rock music.
I can assure you that any self-styled gatekeeper of rock guitar authenticity who slates Smoke on the Water as "too simple" has never come up with, nor will they ever create, a more intricate riff that people will instantly recognise as a classic fifty years down the line.

^ Yep it fits very nicely alongside the likes of Whole Lotta Love, All Right Now, Don't Fear The Reaper, Since You've Been Gone (more Ritchie!), Paranoid etc that appear on the endless procession of 'Dad Rock' type compilation albums that seem to come out from the 80's onwards. I like the chugging bass line and Ian Paice is as tight as ever behind the drums. It does the job perfectly well but is just a bit too slow and 'bluesy' for my taste. I generally prefer Purple when they are being either a proto-prog band with Hammond at the front or when they are ripping it up proto-metal style.
