Subject: Top 5 Deep Purple Songs

There've been many SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE over the years with various line-up changes along the way that reads like THE BOOK OF TALIESYN. DEEP PURPLE are almost as enduring as the U.S. Presidents engraved IN ROCK on Mount Rushmore. Their storming brand of Hard Rock has all the fiery energy of a FIREBALL and the tempered steel hardness of a MACHINE HEAD. The band asked "WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE?" as they prepared to BURN up the world stage with their thunderous live act of STORMBRINGER songs. Crowds flocked in their thousands to COME TASTE THE BAND live. Fans of Deep Purple who began as PERFECT STRANGERS became lifelong friends as they watched the band perform together in THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT. THE BATTLE RAGES ON to determine the best British Rock band of all time, with Deep Purple being PURPENDICULAR to Led Zeppelin in the vast pantheon of Rock. There's nothing quite as thrilling as seeing A-BAND-ON a crazy world tour, no matter whether they're going BANANAS in Brazil or Nuts in the Netherlands. For anyone lucky enough to have experienced the RAPTURE OF THE DEEP Purple Live, they may wonder NOW WHAT can possibly better that in the INFINITE universe of Hard Rock!?
All albums in PURPLE highlights by Deep Purple

I am rather tired of Smoke on the Water, but it is a great song. It's just been overplayed, especially in schools...

None, apart from "The Book of Taliesyn", but I guess you knew that already. I have a couple of Deep Purple compilation albums though.

That's one of the reasons why I created this Top 5 poll, then I might discover some lesser-known Deep Purple songs I hadn't previously heard of.

like I said, a top 5 DP is hard to make, considering they released 20 something albums.
I hope you discover some songs, I also hope you start exploring their discography, every decade has some great stuff if you ask me.

PP, if you've heard Taliesin and liked it, than Shades Of and their third s/t are the way you should go first , because they're the prime reasons why Purple is on ProgArchives. Indeed, those years with Simper & Evans (usually refered to as MkI) are their proggier works.
I suggest that for the MkII line-up (Gillan & Glover), you can first check out the live Made In Japan or the studio In Rock
For the Mk III line-up, (Coverdale & Hughes), the live Made In Europe will be a good introduction to that era

Thanks! I like all three Deep Purple line-ups, and it's the first line-up that appeals to me most of all. The Shades of Deep Purple album and the self-titled third album are top of my list to acquire next.

Made In Japan, though a great Live album, I find is overated. The MkI line-up is my favourite, though Gillan and Glover added more fuel to the uncontrollable fire. It fizzled out a bit with Coverdale / Hughes.

Okay here is my take.
5. Burn
File it under GOAT Openings in Rock. If anyone had doubts whether DP will survive Gillan and Glover departures, here's the answer...
4. Fools
Maybe a favorite track from criminally underrated Fireball. Everyone is hating on Anyone's Daughter, but nobody takes notice of fantastic B side, with Fools leading the charge. In terms of atmosphere, it's one of their best ever. What a shame the band moved away from Fireball material rather quickly.
3. Hard Lovin' Man
Deep Purple In Rock is intense AF, at least by 1970 standards, and this song drives the point home.
2. Highway Star
Pace, vitriol, rock. If 1 out of 10 "rock" bands had this much cojones, the world would be a better place.
1. Child in Time
It has to be somewhere up here, huh? It's simply a sensational tune, one of rock defining moments.
I have a soft spot for Deep Purple's formative years as well as 1980s, up to The Battle Rages On..., but after Blackmore's departure they lost much appeal. I mean, this whole band is about Blackmore and how his riffs/leads/solos coalesce with Jon Lord's amazing sound and Paicey artillery barrage.
That's why Burn is much more interesting than anything from Morse era. Sorry!

Yay, glad I helped Hard Lovin' Man make the top five Paul. It's an amazing track with a relentless galloping bass and drums rhythm (I've always thought they took this from Rondo by the Nice), snarling Hammond, a great guitar solo and Gillan's banshee wails.

Ever considered trying out alternative grading for the tracks in the top 5? The first song gets 6 points while the fifth one gets 1, but for both to be in somebody's top 5, they must both be of comparable levels of noteworthiness, and one isn't six times as good as the other.
That'd be a lot of numbers to add up, though... Keep it up, love lists!
Posted By: Psychedelic Paul
Date Posted: August 13 2020 at 13:33
^ I chose that particular Top 5 numbering system because all of the points divide neatly into 12. The same goes for my Top 7 lists where all of the points divide into 24, and for a Top 10 list, all of the points divide into the number 60.
Not surprisingly, it gives me a bit of a headache adding up the points for my Top 10 lists.

Yeah,
Stormbringer is a criminally underrated song these days. I'm pretty
surprised, though, that no one besides me brought up Hush, which, albeit
a cover, is one of their most beautiful early songs. An outstanding
hippy anthem from '68 that radiates a cozy vibe, featuring Rod Evans'
soothing voice, while the Hammond organ solo is top-notch; Jon Lord
really showcased his skills on this iconic instrument!

Nice to see Stormbringer getting some love.
Yeah,
Stormbringer is a criminally underrated song these days. I'm pretty
surprised, though, that no one besides me brought up Hush, which, albeit
a cover, is one of their most beautiful early songs. An outstanding
hippy anthem from '68 that radiates a cozy vibe, featuring Rod Evans'
soothing voice, while the Hammond organ solo is top-notch; Jon Lord
really showcased his skills on this iconic instrument!
If you'd like to arrange your favourite songs in order, I can add your points to the Top 5.

Video is not working for me, I don't know what you posted, not Hush I hope, it's such a famous song, it's rather pointless, no offense.
I think Stormbringer has always been underrated or overlooked, overshadowed by the more popular Burn. Also a lot of people ignore MKIII because there is no Ian Gillan. Nevertheless the Coverdale+Hughes combination had plenty to offer, proving Gillan was not irreplaceable (IMO).
The band also did some good albums with Steve Morse on guitar which are often overlooked.

No, no problem. This
is indeed the wrong thread for posting a YT video featuring Hush;
actually, I should have posted it in the "Post an obscure track" thread
because apparently it somehow became obscure as no one but me
mentioned it, even though Hush is a superb song from 1968!

Stormbringer,
the song, wasn't underrated at the time when Deep Purple had still been
a current band. On the contrary, it was one of the concert triggers.

You are probably right, surely MKIII & IV has its fans (I've always liked that era), but many people would not listen to DP unless Gillan or Blackmore is in the line-up. If you ask me, they're missing out...

It's never been a favourite of mine either - to me it sounds like something an up and coming high school band might have composed, whereas Highway Star, Lazy, nd Space Trucking from the same album are masterpieces.
On a side note I wonder how many times a day guitar shop staff hear those opening chords twanged by prospective instrument purchasers. [The same can probably be said for 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Sunshine of Your Love'.]

Well, ain't that a bit of a laugh? Back in '72 when Smoke on the Water dropped, pub-rock was all about tunes like this…
Hmmm...

I guess SOTW was of the moment as it told the story of the fire at the Mothers' gig, and probably composed in a short space of time without much time for embellishing or fleshing it out a bit into something grander.

That's fine. I'm not in a hating contest. I'm pleased to hear Ritchie Blackmore hates it. But I just dislike it in the similar way I loathe Roadhouse Blues, Money, Whatever You Want mm...

Nobody hates Smoke on the
Water more than the person who wrote it, Ritchie Blackmore.
I
believe that every great guitarist hits a rough patch at some point in
their journey. Look at Robert Fripp; he's been pretty harsh about the
Lizard album, calling it "unlistenable" and its fans "a bit strange."
The late Allan Holdsworth hated his solo debut from 1976. But let's be
real; not many guitarists make it to that legendary status. Ritchie
Blackmore is one who did, and Smoke on the Water is a huge part of that
legacy. That song has one of the most recognisable riffs out there. I
doubt Ritchie gets any flak for how straightforward that riff is; it's
probably just seen as overplayed.
Personally, I didn't put "Smoke"
in my top five Deep Purple tunes. Still, that riff did exactly what it
was supposed to do. I heard it at a Deep Purple concert I attended as a
kid. It had the right vibe, with a killer rhythm and just enough
simplicity to capture what the band was going for with that song. It
turned into a hit (which surprised the band), and it stuck in our minds.
It became one of those defining riffs of heavy rock music.
I can
assure you that any self-styled gatekeeper of rock guitar authenticity
who slates Smoke on the Water as "too simple" has never come up with,
nor will they ever create, a more intricate riff that people will
instantly recognise as a classic fifty years down the line.

^ Yep it fits very nicely alongside the likes of Whole Lotta Love, All Right Now, Don't Fear The Reaper, Since You've Been Gone (more Ritchie!), Paranoid etc that appear on the endless procession of 'Dad Rock' type compilation albums that seem to come out from the 80's onwards. I like the chugging bass line and Ian Paice is as tight as ever behind the drums. It does the job perfectly well but is just a bit too slow and 'bluesy' for my taste. I generally prefer Purple when they are being either a proto-prog band with Hammond at the front or when they are ripping it up proto-metal style.
