The Yes Album was the first album by these giants that I loved. I had initially listened to their more blues/conventional oriented debut and was disppointed by them. Genesis' Trespass has the song 'Nursery Cryme', right? That is also one of the first Genesis songs I love though the entire album isn't as consistent. I have heard praise for Dream Theater but their prog metal leanings kept me from exploring them. I don't think I have withstood much from the metal genre except for Black Sabbath.

How are any of these albums overrated is beyond me. They are all influential, inspired other musicians. They deserve all the love and appreciation they get.

I only heard ELP upto their Love Beach thing. I wasn't even aware that Emerson, Lake and Powell also existed.

I liked the title song from that Genesis album but by and large, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound, I like more.

What comes to mind is Riverside's 'Second Eye Syndrome', then also: -Dream Theater's 'Images & Words' (it is fantastic but not a full-on prog masterpiece for me), -Yes' 'The Yes Album' -Genesis' 'Trespass' -'2112' by Rush -'Script' by Marillion

I've been thinking about my own personal ratings for ELP's 10 studio albums and it goes like this ELP (1970) - 9/10 Tarkus (1971) - 8/10 Trilogy (1972) - 9/10 Brain Salad Surgery (1973) - 10/10 Works Volume One (1977) - 7/10 Works Volume Two (1977) - 5/10 Love Beach (1978) - 3/10 Emerson,Lake and Powell (1986) - 6/10 Black Moon (1992) -5/10 In The Hot Seat (1994) - 2/10 The first 5 - average rating 8.6 The last 5 - average rating 4.2 well you get the picture! the band was more or less done by 1978, classic case of a band going on too long past their 'sell by date'. I think other bands were able to sustain the success a little longer. ELP were always the poster band for classic era prog though so their collapse was big news. I think they never fully recovered from the negative publicity of the Works tour when they were losing a million dollars a show for those early orchestral gigs. It bit them hard.

I can here to give a bold an honest opinion only to find everyone already talking kind of about the same thing... here it goes anyways:
The top 3 ELP albums are vastly superior to the top 3 VdGG albums, which (IMHO) make the latter highly overrated. I'm not saying they are not amazing albums anyways.

Pawn Hearts was definitely a grower for me, as was Van Der Graff as a band. I'm still growing into their music. One album I've never been able to get into is Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Don't get me wrong, it contains songs I love but as a whole album, I'm not into it. |

I guess half of the reviewers from here did't understand the question, how the hell the mega influencial albums from golden prog era are overrated, that is crap from the start.

I don't believe in overrated songs or bands, every band or song has The crédit they deserve and everbody is entitled to their taste.

Same here. I first liked VdGG first two albums more; H to He and Least we can do is Wave [Aerosol grey machine doesn't count as a VdGG album]. The scope of Pawn Hearts is so much bigger but the album rocks as hard as it can. It also has some of Hamill's finest lyrics both introspective and sometimes dark. I personally think the band peaked with this album. Still Life and World Record , I couldn't come to love.

I will list two albums from the krautrock sub - genre. Hosianna Mantra - Popol Vuh Despite being rated quite high, I found it almost boring on first listen. Not that it's bad,but it's more suited for meditative listening,IMO. I was expecting more from it. Tago Mago - Can This is often considered Can's masterpiece but I personally felt that the vocals degraded the inherent nature of the songs. The lyrics aren't anything great and the singer is nonplussed about it. I liked the sound of their debut album 'Monster Movie' more. If I had to name one album from the top 10 of the studio albums listed on the site, I would choose Tull's Thick as a Brick. After listening to the masterpiece Aqualung, I was expecting an album as good but I was disappointed. Yes, the album is ambitious in scope and I can understand why it has it's fans but it wasn't for me. Maybe I would need multiple listens to appreciate it furthur. There are other bands like Opeth or Dream Theater listed as well whose works I haven't listened to and I know I won't like because metal as a genre doesn't gel well with me.So, if I list their albums, it would be cheating.

I liked both of those albums when I listened but didn't found them to be that great. But then, every person can have their tastes. I prefer the hardening edge in sound that bands like Atomic Rooster or VdGG bought more sometimes.

You are explaining what ELP is to an ELP connoisseur.

ELP had some good albums, especially their debut or Tarkus. Something like Love Beach may not have aged well, but many band's of that era have had some disappointing runs.

Hi, How logical all this is ... but you can think what you want since it is the rule, and the law ... and outsiders be damned! Look who is saying "repeat" faster than I ever did!
|
||
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^^Just as I thought. You pretend to care about "modern stuff" but you don't. You're always on repeat.
I go back hundreds of years myself and discover something new. All the time. Everyone does. Not just you. I have a bigger collection of Baroque music than I have "Prog Rock". Who cares. You made a list of Bach and Vivaldi. That was obviously ok, so what's the difference? |

I did not say you do not fit in the discussion, how did you get that from what i said, i don't know. But to say that we, users dehumanize music and artists in our discussion is an exaggeration. There has always been a diversity of opinions here on PA, people don't agree on everything and this is great. How have i implied that I want people to think alike?!
