From that list only Pink Floyd and Yes are in my top 5 prog bands of all time.

The other three in my top 5 would be Curved Air, Focus, and ELP.

From the list, Yes & Genesis. Added to my personal top 5...ELP, Gentle Giant, and Triumvirat.

Their first album was released over 32 years ago. I wouldn't consider that modern prog. I was just being silly. Listen to what you like.

I do but I listen to a whole lot more than just those five (or 13). It's just that very few modern (your definition of modern) would crack my top 100 (if modern means the past ten years or so if we go back a little further then a few more).

I picked "other" which for me would be Transatlantic. I never got into King Crimson or Rush, I only recently started to appreciate some of Genesis (mainly SEBTP and Supper's Ready), and there are only a few of Yes and Pink Floyd's catalogue that I like.

You sound like you are probably young (or relatively young).

I chose "Other" (because it was available). It is no secret that my favourite group by a considerable margin is Van der Graaf Generator.

Of the other choices (if "Other" were not available), I would have chosen Yes.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I like VDGG a lot too but over the years they have fallen off my personal top 5 list. Maybe still top ten though.

I'm listening to them more now than I did in the past. And when I'm not listening to them, I'm usually listening to something other than the five groups of this topic. Nevertheless, four of the five groups (not Rush) are foundational to me.

I should remark that VdGG became my favourite group pretty much from the beginning of my venture into prog, from when I started listening to Pawn Hearts.

Pawn Hearts is great but maybe my third favorite. My favorites are Godbluff then Still Life.

For me, Pawn Hearts is a big step above all other albums, including other VdGG albums. Although currently I definitely prefer H to He, Who Am the Only One over Godbluff, even as far back as '79 when I purchased both albums together, retrospectively my behaviour would indicate a definite preference towards H to He, Who Am the Only One. When I got Still Life sometime later, I could not quite get into this album like I did the other albums I had at the time. However, after that I did immediately fall in love with The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other.

I definitely prefer the early period sounds of the pre-Godbluff albums over the more streamlined sound of the first three post-Pawn Hearts albums. There were definitely masterpieces in those three post-Pawn Hearts albums, but gone were the truly fascinating sound textures that I adored from the pre-Godbluff albums and especially Pawn Hearts.

Your taste is often good Richard, so I may have to try listening to the 3 bands on your list that I’ve never heard - Eloy, Glass Hammer and Kayak….

So if you like so little of the five bands I chose then what do you mostly listen to (I'm just curious)? Besides Transatlantic that is (a band who wouldn't exist if it weren't for Yes, KC and Genesis).

I like the early VDGG albums (although I haven't heard TAGM yet) but not as much as the mid 70s albums. I suppose it's all about personal preference. The early stuff sounds more chaotic and disjointed which is maybe a good thing for many people. While I like the craziness factor to some degree I feel starting with Godbluff their music became much more focused and cohesive. That's just my opinion though.

When talking about favourite bands, I thinki that it's better to focus on music than persons, and music means best albums, as concerts are again much about persons. When then talking about comparing albums, it's often difficult to me, as they're different and I enjoy them in different ways. I also think that it's better just to enjoy albums instead of to think about which ones I like best.

Well, aren't there enough polls that look like this?

Which do you prefer?

Moving Pictures
Close to The Edge
Selling England by the Pound
Wish You Were Here
In The Court of the Crimson King
