a Noob Needs recommendations

Hello everyone, I've just register here for some recommendations of Prog metal bands.

oh, Who am I? I'm justa 17-yearold nerd in Bangkok,Thailand (well i guess you guys know where my country is). A brief introduction to my lovely city, Bangkok is.. in one word, URBAN! it's not full of rice fields 'n garden with people riding elephants (as some foreigners think, haha) and we Thais do have considerable access to Internet, and also kinds of imported musics.

(for folks who'd like a detailed essay on Thailand maybe u can email me, just kidding lol)

ah, did that sound like bragging? honestly I didn't mean to. well, back to prog stuff,

Currently I know just ONE prog band (DT, ofcourse, and love it) and would like to know some more goodies in this category.

Well, I'm surely not [yet] hardcore fan of any kind of music. But I do like bands like

DT, Metallica, and uhh.. rammstein

I love technical style and deep feelings of DT, Powerful yet Elegant.

and I just noticed 20 minutes ago that there are lots more good prog bands mentioned here.

Oh and one more question, Where are you guys from? are there many prog fans in your city?

I ask you this because in thailand there are so FEW prog fans! reasons are that there are not many Thais who 're interested in English and most can barely use it, And even less Metal fans!

You guys don't wanna scare him off...    He says the only prog band he knows is DT...  why not show him other prog bands, and ease him into the older stuff?  

the 'seminal' prog bands are generally considered something like this

after that try these

5. Gentle Giant
6. Camel
7. Renaissance

okay sorry, I'm not really into prog-metal (at all) but thats the cream of the prog crop.

I don't think you people GET it.  Maybe felona, but not the rest of you.  I know you're trying to do him a favor, but you're likely going to turn him off from this if you do it in the wrong way.

He's like "I like Dream Theater, and Metallica, and other metal bands."  He's stressed his metal roots multiple times, and mentioned that DT is the only prog band he knows.  And you're all like "LOL try some Yes and Genesis!!!111!!1"  Yes and Genesis are excellent, I agree, but all in due time.  If this metalhead here listens to Yes, he's most likely gonna be like "...riiiiiight."  If he does some prog metal, explores *their* roots, he might find his way to Yes and have the experience to understand the context of it and enjoy it.  As is, you're all being a bit too assumptuous...  don't turn this guy off from prog.  There's plenty of bands in the Archives that could lead him in quite nicely, no need to suggest classic symphonic prog to "help him along" when he's plainly stated his only prog experience is through DT, and that he likes metal.  Sheesh, guys.

Well, in that case, I would try Symphony X - actually all of their albums are good, but particularly V.  Or try Fates Warning - I would start with A Pleasant Shade of Gray.  For some metal mixed with some great keyboard work try Erik Norlander - Music Machine.  Is that better?

But I don't mind whether your fav bands are good starts for a prog newbies or not, I'm happy for all the recommends you mentioned and would see how can i get my hands on those.

also a lesser known band from Sweden called Salva ...thier debut is quite quite good!
