I just edited my list to add these ten:
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso - Same PFM - Storia Di Un Minuto Camel - Same Transatlantic - SMPT:e Pavlov's Dog - Pampered Menial Family - Music In a Doll's House (at least as much of prog as PF's PATGOD) Änglagård - Hybris Anekdoten - Vemod Happy the Man - Same Also, not to be too nitpicky but DOFP was not the first MB album. Question: Which was the Genesis debut?
"From Genesis to Revelation" or "Trespass"? The latter is surely the stronger LP! Also, many of these bands had "proto-debut" LPs. For example, "The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp" clearly led into ITCOTCK! Great discussion everyone!! Paul, thanks for the amazing list!

I was going to mention Captain Beyond but wasn't sure if it was prog enough. Great album though.

^^For me it's very simple. The debut is the first album released by the specific artist or band. The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp isn't the band King Crimson, but From Genesis to Revelation is released by Genesis - the band. That's why to me In the Court of the Crimson King is the former bands debut - and Trespass is the latter band's second album.

Thanks for reminding me that it's Music In A Doll's House and not From. I'll have to go fix that.

Yes and I can understand why people say DOFP is the first Moody Blues album (even the band themselves considered it to be) but really it isn't because they had some of the same members plus the name is the same. Otherwise the first Renaissance album isn't Renaissance and also you could say Genesis didn't start until Trespass or Nursery Cryme and Yes didn't start until the Yes album but then it starts to get a bit silly.

-An album released by the record company without permission from the artist is such a rare exception from "my rule", that is doesn't have an impact on how I think. But I agree that it doesn't count, as it's not the artists own album creation.

Yep in my book an E.P. (occasionally known as a maxi-single) contains 3-6 tracks and plays for around 10-20 minutes (i.e longer than the traditional 7" single). An album usually clocks in at 30+ minutes... anything in between can probably be described as a mini-album.
Although it's not hard and fast, and indeed gets more intriguing them more you delve into it. Edited by Floydoid - August 18 2024 at 14:05 |

As far as a "proto-debut" LP, I would include Jethro Tull's This Was from 1968. It may have been the first album under that band name, but it was more of a collaboration in blues-rock and jazz with Mick Abrahams and Ian Anderson sharing the spotlight. It wasn't until 1969's Stand Up that we get the truer prog direction of the band.
