Many times, upon going back, I realize that the debut albums of our favorite bands contained some amazing music, displays of virtuosity, and creative writing!
Examples include ITCOTCK, first ELP LP and so forth.
Recently, I found this live Yes track of "Survival" from their first album, and I went back to explore that effort. There is some AMAZING music on that first disc, including Squire's very aggressive bass playing, lush vocal harmonies (even Peter Banks sings backup!) and great songwriting! Back then, I was listening to the Monkees
What is your favorite prog debut? Check this out:

Some of the most impressive debut albums (besides KC):
ELO: ELO I
Gentle G: GG
Moodies: DoFP
Mahavishnus: tIMF
M Oldfield: TB
I'm reluctant to include ELP's, being as they were all established, successful artists by this time.
One I would single out would be Camel's debut, especially the remastered CD, which has Pete's 'Homage To The God Of Light' on... 20 mins of fabulous jam... every home should have one.
------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

That's not their debut album though.
-Here's ten that stand out to me as classics right out of the gate (besides KC). I only include bands that had a recording career of sorts:
Magma - Magma/Kobaïa
Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye
Premiata Forneria Marconi - Storia di un Minuto
Weather Report - St
Area - Arbeit Macht Frei
Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk
Nucleus - Elastic Rock
Bo Hansson - Sagan om Ringen
Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant
-I'm sure I could think of many more, but this will do for now.

ITCOCK, ELP s/t, and TB are peeress as stunning debut albums (IMO) - many artists don't properly get into their stride until around the 3rd or 4th album.

The first Roxy Music album! Man, just for If There Is Something.....whadda record!
Yes! Man, I dig Peter Banks' sound paired with Bruford's jazzy drumming and Squire's twang.....whadda debut!
Weather Report.....spooky first album. Zawinul took that In a Silent Way approach and expanded it.....that LP covers says everything about just how far they expanded!
Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom.....what can you say? Music saved our Robert.
Can's Monster Movie.....maybe 'cause I just had it on in the car and You Do Right hit just right. The Mooney LPs are sometimes overlooked.....they're a heart full of soul!
------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

My favourite prog debut: Supertramp (self titled)
A bit different in style than Crime of the Century. I would call it a bit more 'crimsonesque'

Question: Which was the Genesis debut?
"From Genesis to Revelation" or "Trespass"? The latter is surely the stronger LP!
Also, many of these bands had "proto-debut" LPs.
For example, "The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp" clearly led into ITCOTCK!
Great discussion everyone!! Paul, thanks for the amazing list!

Captain Beyond, s/t
Uriah Heep, "Very Eavy....Very 'Umble" (US release had the amazing song "Bird of Prey")
Styx, s/t
Starcastle, s/t
Flash, s/t
Having been around a number of bands that were recording their debut LP, I know that the energy runs very high in the studio!!
I was going to mention Captain Beyond but wasn't sure if it was prog enough. Great album though.

^^For me it's very simple. The debut is the first album released by the specific artist or band. The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp isn't the band King Crimson, but From Genesis to Revelation is released by Genesis - the band. That's why to me In the Courtof the Crimson King is the former bands debut - and Trespass is the latter band's second album.

Yes and I can understand why people say DOFP is the first Moody Blues album (even the band themselves considered it to be) but really it isn't because they had some of the same members plus the name is the same. Otherwise the first Renaissance album isn't Renaissance and also you could say Genesis didn't start until Trespass or Nursery Cryme and Yes didn't start until the Yes album but then it starts to get a bit silly.

Not necessarily. If the first album is an EP, I wouldn't call it the debut. Or if the first album was released by the record company without permission from the artist, and said artist received no compensation from that release, for example, Allan Holdsworth's "Velvet Darkness" then it is not their debut.

It's still relatively simple to me - an EP is an EP, just like a Single is a Single release and can never be an album.
-An album released by the record company without permission from the artist is such a rare exception from "my rule", that is doesn't have an impact on how I think. But I agree that it doesn't count, as it's not the artists own album creation.

I suppose I can understand it, but it's not correct and I don't agree. And I find it pointless. Some bands deliver a classic debut album - others need a few attemnts to get it right.

Yep in my book an E.P. (occasionally known as a maxi-single) contains 3-6 tracks and plays for around 10-20 minutes (i.e longer than the traditional 7" single). An album usually clocks in at 30+ minutes... anything in between can probably be described as a mini-album.
Although it's not hard and fast, and indeed gets more intriguing them more you delve into it.

As far as a "proto-debut" LP, I would include Jethro Tull's This Was from 1968. It may have been the first album under that band name, but it was more of a collaboration in blues-rock and jazz with Mick Abrahams and Ian Anderson sharing the spotlight. It wasn't until 1969's Stand Up that we get the truer prog direction of the band.

And you could say the same thing about Genesis with Trespass and maybe even Yes with TYA but unfortunately a band doesn't get to retroactively state what their debut album was.

Very good point! I still think the first album by Yes is progressive enough to qualify, Squire's bass playing is remarkable, and Peter Banks also lights it up!
In the classic era (late 1960s to early 1970s), launching a band and recording that first LP is quite different than these days. Most of the famous prog bands were VERY young musicians, and attracted label support by the strength of their live act and club following. Hence the famous "living on the tour bus" stories we all hear about! Landing a radio single was always a goal, and some bands like King Crimson just never got there.
Therefore, these first debut albums were often rather rough, sometimes hurried, and not necessarily as polished as when the musicians had chances to gel with each other. I went through this a bit with Starcastle, who recruited their vocalist, Terry Lutrell, from another local Champaign Illinois band REO Speedwagon. (REO went on to wealth and fame, and Starcastle, well, not so much!). I think this is an interesting topic of discussion!

official release by CTI Records, with whom Holdsworth had a valid
contract that the label could release everything recorded. It's true
that Holdsworth did not acknowledge it in the interviews, reportedly
because he didn't know that "rehearsels" would have been released as an
album, but it did not change the reality. "Velvet Darkness," as the
first record by Allan Holdsworth as a solo artist, is listed everywhere
as his debut, including this site's database. The album itself is
not bad at all; on the contrary, it had a raw energy like none of his
later albums, and those acoustic tracks are fantastic.

Part of the "charm" if you will for me, is that while some bands
needs to grow, change and reinvent themselves while members come and go,
others nail it "from day one"*. In early Yes, Tull and Genesis you can
easily hear the building blocks
and understand how and why they became the bands we "know and love" (and
I enjoy all of these first releases anyway). Isn't it interesting and
rewarding listening to any band that metamorfs from relatively promising
but patchy and unfinished - to greatness whether it's Please, Please
Me>Rubber Soul, The Magnificent Moodies>Days of Future Passed,
Pablo Honey>Ok Computer...? An early lesser album doesn't take away
any of the later achievements (quite the contrary) and neither does the
first classic or first proggy album, remove their "false starts".
*obviously not how it works, but you know what I mean, don't you?

The late Allan Holdsworth, at the time an already
renowned guitarist who collaborated with many bands, was introduced to
Creed Taylor, the founder of CTI Records, through fellow musician George
Benson. This connection led to Holdsworth signing a recording contract
with CTI Records in spring 1976. According to the general rule of that
time, the label had the right to release everything the signed artist
records for the duration of the contract within the context of a
recording contract, including, for instance, the releases of live
recordings if there were any. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder originally
recorded the tracks for the album "Velvet Darkness" on 24–26 May and 18
June, 1976, at his Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey; it has been used to
record many albums released by jazz labels such as Blue Note, Prestige,
Verve, Impulse!, and CTI Records. Holdsworth subsequently claimed in the
interviews that the album recording was done during a rehearsal session
and that CTI Records released the tapes without getting permission from
him or the other musicians who participated on the record. Reportedly,
royalties were never given to any of the participating musicians for
their efforts. CTI Records indeed faced financial problems at the time
and even filed for bankruptcy in 1978. As a result, Holdsworth saw the
album like a bootleg. However, Allan Holdsworth never took any legal
action.
As CTI Records was a label known for its high-quality
jazz recordings and for promoting artists who pushed the boundaries of
jazz music, the fact that "Velvet Darkness" was released and distributed
by a reputable label as CTI really indicated that "Velvet Darkness" as a
release had official backing and support from the music industry at
that time. Also, "Velvet Darkness" saw several reissues, both on CTI
Records and other labels like King Records (Japan) and Talking Elephant
(UK). Therefore, "Velvet Darkness" is not a bootleg but an officially
released album, and hence it is listed on all reliable sites as Allan
Holdsworth's first solo record.

^And here is an excerpt from a 1993 Innerviews interview with Allan that states the opposite.
I didn't know you had Velvet Darkness pulled.
It was no good. It was never any good. The way it was recorded, what happened to the musicians, the whole thing. It was a complete disaster. It was terrible at that time and that makes it terrible today. It's one thing to say I'll look back to that old I.O.U. album and go "Well, it sounds pretty old, and maybe I don't like it as much as the other stuff." But, the fact was that it was what it is then and it was okay then and everybody accepted that to be the fact at that time. That was not true of Velvet Darkness. That album was never fit to be released. Nobody got to hear anything they did. I never got a tape of anything that was recorded. And we were actually rehearsing in the studio and they were rolling the tape while we were rehearsing on the premise that we'd be able to keep recording and also check things out, but that never happened. At the end of that day, the guy said "Thanks, see ya!" That's why a lot of those tunes don't have any endings—they were rehearsals. That was a complete rip-off. I never saw any royalties from the album. And that's the main reason it got it stopped. They didn't have a contract. They didn't have any publishing. They didn't have the rights to anything. This happens all the time. There are bootlegs all over the place—exactly the same thing.
Epic records bought the whole CTI catalog from someone and put out that 1990 CD. That album's been bootlegged three times. Each time I think, "Great, that's the end of that one." But it showed up again. It keeps showing up! But now that it's owned by a big label, they had to produce all the paperwork and they couldn't. So, that's how we got 'em. They had no paperwork for anything to say they could do any of that stuff. But there's no way you can stop these things, in general.

Sound Of Contact only did one album (it's great for sure). The 2 key members Dave Kerzner and Simon Collins eventually went their seperate ways and Kerzner did a couple of albums under the moniker In Continuum which featured material that was originally earmarked for SOC. Collins also formed a band called eMolecule last year with Kelly Nordstrom (also ex SOC) and released an excellent album called The Architect. Well worth checking out all these side projects if you like SOC.

It's for die hard fans who needs to own everything only - or maybe those into of Library Music/Moogsploitation-kinds of albums. As the latter group of nerds include me. That's why I've listened to them at some point. Two forgettable footnotes that I found somewhat interesting to have heard, once.

I'm a fairly new Glass Hammer fan (first getting turned on by the amazing album "Perilous!), and their debut album "Journey of the Dunadan" certainly led to greater things!

That's a fine debut, definitely worth owning. Years ago, I stumbled across a sealed copy and took it, since the earliest one I had at the time was Perelandra.

^ It was Chronomotree that sparked my interest in Glass Hammer. The Inconsolable Secret is the one I regularly return to. I like that more than most classic symph prog. One of only 2 albums with drummer Matt Mendians, he of the stripey sticks and facial tick. Great drummer, kind of their Bill Bruford as I see it.

Chronometree remains my favorite GH album, followed by Inconsolable and Dunadan. They've done some other good works, but nothing vibes for me the way those three do.

I enjoy the recent albums a lot including Arise. They have got a lot heavier and moved away from the more symphonic style they were mainly known for. There is a lot to enjoy in their back catalogue and very little to avoid.

I wasn't aware of those early electronica releases, bit pricey to buy so may have to pass. Never purchased A Matter Of Time which is essentially a compilation (allbeit reimagined and re-recorded) but love the cheeky artwork!

Several people in the Pink Floyd camp have stated in the past that there remains a possibility that Syd Barrett wrote most of the songs for Piper At The Gates Of Dawn years before. Not all great debut albums are written in that way , but it does occur and it presents a different kind of process when putting the album together. An example being that several songs that were written and developed years ago are now being further developed and molded into the perfect end result..which sometimes can be magical!!
