Many times, upon going back, I realize that the debut albums of our favorite bands contained some amazing music, displays of virtuosity, and creative writing!

Examples include ITCOTCK, first ELP LP and so forth.

Recently, I found this live Yes track of "Survival" from their first album, and I went back to explore that effort.  There is some AMAZING music on that first disc, including Squire's very aggressive bass playing, lush vocal harmonies (even Peter Banks sings backup!) and great songwriting!   Back then, I was listening to the Monkees LOL

What is your favorite prog debut?  Check this out:

Some of the most impressive debut albums (besides KC):

ELO: ELO I
Gentle G: GG
Moodies: DoFP
Mahavishnus: tIMF
M Oldfield: TB

I'm reluctant to include ELP's, being as they were all established, successful artists by this time.

One I would single out would be Camel's debut, especially the remastered CD, which has Pete's 'Homage To The God Of Light' on... 20 mins of fabulous jam... every home should have one.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

That's not their debut album though.

-Here's ten that stand out to me as classics right out of the gate (besides KC). I only include bands that had a recording career of sorts:

Magma - Magma/Kobaοa
Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye
Premiata Forneria Marconi - Storia di un Minuto
Weather Report - St
Area - Arbeit Macht Frei
Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk
Nucleus - Elastic Rock
Bo Hansson - Sagan om Ringen
Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant

-I'm sure I could think of many more, but this will do for now.

ITCOCK, ELP s/t, and TB are peeress as stunning debut albums (IMO) - many artists don't properly get into their stride until around the 3rd or 4th album.

I have two favourite debut albums:

Split Enz - Mental Notes
Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye

The first Roxy Music album!  Man, just for If There Is Something.....whadda record!

Yes!  Man, I dig Peter Banks' sound paired with Bruford's jazzy drumming and Squire's twang.....whadda debut!

Weather Report.....spooky first album.  Zawinul took that In a Silent Way approach and expanded it.....that LP covers says everything about just how far they expanded!

Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom.....what can you say?  Music saved our Robert.

Can's Monster Movie.....maybe 'cause I just had it on in the car and You Do Right hit just right.  The Mooney LPs are sometimes overlooked.....they're a heart full of soul!

As Goblin, technically. Cherry Five (Oliver) was released the same year.

I guess if you only have one album, and it's killer, that counts.

My favourite prog debut:  Supertramp (self titled)

A bit different in style than Crime of the Century. I would call it a bit more 'crimsonesque' Tongue

One could also say that The End of an Ear is his debut album.
