It's kind of fascinatinig looking at these jazz-polls made by someone who obviously doesn't really appreciate jazz. My personal ten favorites from the year: Ahmed Abdul-Malik - East Meets West
Chico Hamilton Quintet featuring Eric Dolphy - St Max Roach - We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite Bill Evans Trio - Portrait in Jazz John Coltrane - Giant Steps Eric Dolphy Quintet - Outward Bound Yusef Lateef - The Centaur and the Phoenix The Modern Jazz Quartet - Pyramid Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery Edited by Saperlipopette! - June 21 2024 at 14:51 |

At least art pepper and dolphy are on the list. It’s a mainstream list. Saprlipoppette has some good picks.

There's only one 4-star album for me in the poll, so it has to be Henry Mancini.

Maybe Superlipopette should be doing these jazz polls instead, as he clearly knows more about jazz than I do.

I'd pick Henry Mancini every time over Miles Davis, John Coltrane or Bill Evans and I'd never heard of Charles Mingus' Ah Um album before last week. Despite the 3-star ratings, I am a jazz fan, but I'm more into Smooth Jazz and Jazz-Funk than late 50's/early 1960's Trad Jazz.

Thanks Will. I'll keep them coming, and maybe I'll even surprise you by finding at least two 4-star albums in the next jazz poll for 1961.

By the way, I just discovered Lalo Schifrin is half-American, so it's not an impossible mission for me to include his marvellous albums in this series of jazz polls too.

Lujon is just one reason why Henry Mancini is always top of the jazz pops for me.

I only own two of these albums, John Coltrane's Giant Steps and Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain, and love both. The third stream renditions of music on Sketches of Spain have a special place in my heart.

I own four jazz albums from 1960 but they're all by Les Baxter who isn't in the poll.
