It's kind of fascinatinig looking at these jazz-polls made by someone who obviously doesn't really appreciate jazz. My personal ten favorites from the year:

Ahmed Abdul-Malik - East Meets West
Chico Hamilton Quintet featuring Eric Dolphy - St
Max Roach - We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite
Bill Evans Trio - Portrait in Jazz
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Eric Dolphy Quintet - Outward Bound
Yusef Lateef - The Centaur and the Phoenix
The Modern Jazz Quartet - Pyramid
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery

I'm fascinated by the three star choices.

At least art pepper and dolphy are on the list. It’s a mainstream list. Saprlipoppette has some good picks.

There's only one 4-star album for me in the poll, so it has to be Henry Mancini. Smile

Maybe Superlipopette should be doing these jazz polls instead, as he clearly knows more about jazz than I do. Tongue

I certainly don't mind you making these polls, and I'm not going to myself. So please continue. I'm just looking at your ratings and picks, and sharing my thought I guess. It's not an insult to say that you're not really a jazz fan. It's simply true. Two four stars as best out of these fifty first titles, and your only four star here is a more of a lounge album. I mean you probably given Mostly Autumn alone close to 50 five stars.

Mingus did surprisingly well in the previous 1959 poll (picking up six votes), bearing in mind I only included his Ah Um album as an afterthought, after a lot of Um-ming and Ah-ing. Embarrassed
...that's funny to me because it's not surprising to anyone into jazz. Mingus Ah-Um is a canonized all time classic jazz album, almost up there with Kind of Blue and Time Out in legendary status. An real surprise would be someone picking Henry Mancini over Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans in a jazz poll.

I'd pick Henry Mancini every time over Miles Davis, John Coltrane or Bill Evans and I'd never heard of Charles Mingus' Ah Um album before last week. Embarrassed

Despite the 3-star ratings, I am a jazz fan, but I'm more into Smooth Jazz and Jazz-Funk than late 50's/early 1960's Trad Jazz. Smile

Thanks Will. I'll keep them coming, and maybe I'll even surprise you by finding at least two 4-star albums in the next jazz poll for 1961. Wink

By the way, I just discovered Lalo Schifrin is half-American, so it's not an impossible mission for me to include his marvellous albums in this series of jazz polls too. Thumbs Up

Lujon is just one reason why Henry Mancini is always top of the jazz pops for me. Clap

I only own two of these albums, John Coltrane's Giant Steps and Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain, and love both. The third stream renditions of music on Sketches of Spain have a special place in my heart.

Giant Steps is my personal favorite, and is one of my Sunday morning coffee albums! : )

I own four jazz albums from 1960 but they're all by Les Baxter who isn't in the poll. Confused
