Although serotonin is released in the brain when consuming food and particular drugs, there is no actual serotonin in chocolate. Serotonin doesn't really "serve as an anti-depressant', it's rather one of the key chemicals that controls our mood. But the thing is, if you have low levels of serotonin you become depressed. Anti-depressants (SSRI's) increases the serotonin levels in the brain indirectly, in the same way that amphetamines increases the levels of dopamine in the brain.

I personally rely not on drugs (be they legal or otherwise - I'm teetotal), nor God to augment my life. For me, as long as I can I write, listen to music, and spend time with the people I love I'm set. Certif1ed, I have to say that your post about your family, house, car, etc was dreadfully smug and materialistic. Is that really how you equate your success - on what you own?

We all use cannabis - in fact, we all produce it naturally.

What exactly is the point in this argument?

Doing drugs is a choice...Yes or no, Some people choose yes. Calm down, These things happen...

That can't really be considered a valid argument pro cannabis. We also produce morphine-like chemicals in the brain, it doesn't mean that we should all chew on a chunk of opium every odd 15 minutes.

We also produce fat - don't drink a grease tank.

Of course cannabis should be legal, it doesn't take half a pizza for a brain to figure that out. But it does take two large with extra cheese of ignorance to deny it's harmlessness.

Arthur C Clarke said that 'the only genuine consciousness-expanding drug is science fiction.'
I wouldn't agree with that either but in a way it accentuates what happens in the streams on drugs.

In a postmodern, poststructuralist world, truth itself is considered a subjective experience, and Frank Zappa's take on drugs becomes the creed for those who want to take them with a happy conscionsce.  "A drug is neither moral or immoral - its a chemical compound. The compound itself is not a menace to society until a human being treats it as if consumption bestowed a temporary licence to act like an asshole."  (F. Z.)

We are polarised on this and in the end we have to 'live and let live.'

No coffee or tea? How about cocoa? These are all drugs.

Anything that can be imbibed is a drug. But some things have to be taken in really huge quantities to have any psychotropic effect. If you ate 20 pounds of potatoes I am quite sure it would mentally affect you.

Isn't there some difference in visiting a friend or aquaintance and accepting or not their offer of 'would you like some tea or would you prefer heroin instead.'

what would have more accurate for me to have said is that chocolate contains tryptophan which increases serotonin levels in the brain ...

Yes, but watching TV several hours a day is a very common -but harmful- addiction.

Yep, and it may seem like nitpicking from the perspective of the untrained eye, but it's not. It would be the same principle as if you were suggesting that oxygen contains haemoglobin.

Agreed. But that still rather depends on what one watches - if you actively watch intelligent television (which believe me, DOES exist, and I hope to one day add to it) and avoid the drivel then it can enhance your life rather than just fill up time/make you think less.

Cannabis, however, is not "harmless". My friend who I mentioned earlier became a heavy cannabis user, lost all of their inclination to succeed in life, and soon moved on to harder drugs which had even more devastating effects. I will never forgive drugs for effectively ruining her, and anyone who suggests that cannabis is harmless is just plain wrong.

I'd also like to state that I still support the legalisation of all drugs. Making their use a crime just exaccerbates things.

Oh - and I drink tea, but not coffee. Never got on with it. And as Barbs says - there is f**king world of difference between tea and heroin. Silly argument.
