Hypothetical scenario: You're put on an island, and you can only take with you your favorite (prog) album. But you need to choose between the music (let's say it's a solar powered hifi system, and the music is on some digital medium like a memory chip/stick) and the cover art and booklet, and maybe the vinyl/CD (but you don't have a player for those).

What would it be?

Well a satellite internet connection with all my music on the cloud. If it's a week's journey i can live without music. If i'm stuck there for life then that's my plan. There are no limitations these days. If i moved to the island you'd better believe my entire physical collection would relocate with me :)

I wonder if there has ever been a two-choice poll in which one of the choices received no votes at all. This could very well be such a poll... The music (of course).

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Obviously the music wins here. Wanted to make a point related to another thread. This is not an argument against cover art or booklets! They have an important role, both for marketing the music and as part of the general artistic package (for many artists). But when push comes to shove and you had to choose, of course cover art and booklet aren't worth much without the music. They can still be magnificent works of art in their own right, but they're usually not why you purchased the release.

^ i've bought many vinyl albums for the cover art alone even if i don't like the album.

It makes great wall art. Yes the music comes first but cover art is always a welcome bonus.

^ I also purchased some releases mainly for the cover art, but I eventually sold those where the music ultimately did not live up to my expectations. You repeated my basic point: As good as cover art can be, the music comes first - but there is of course really awesome cover art.

^ yeah but it's not an all or nothing proposal in the real world. I love looking at a wall full of music. It's ecstasy to my eyes. Sure i wouldn't collect soda cans for the same visual effect. Great music and great visual art go together. If you lack the visuals you're missing an important element. The classic vinyl albums often made the album cover art as intricate as the music inside. I do love the convenience of hard drives and iPods and all that but i'll never let go of my physical specimens and i continue to buy them on CD if i can :)

If it's Prog, like, say, Pawn Hearts, definitely the music, but in many cases I would rather have the cover art or a big poster that came in the album, or even if it came with a hut wall-hanging bath mat cum erstwhile toilet seat cover.

I mean if I had no photos, I would like album photo art to help sustain me during my lonely isolation. Oh the joy of waking up every day to this:

Well, it's a hypothetical scenario, a thought experiment.

Like I said in the other thread, I really like cover art. On my website there was a time many years ago when I had to remove all cover art for legal reasons, but when I did the relaunch I made it a priority. I also always enjoyed having a physical copy of a release, especially the vinyl releases.

But regardless, I still think that the music itself is the essence of a release. It's even better to also have the cover art, which is of course the case with all mediums - regardless of whether you download the music, or you use a streaming service, or you buy the CD or vinyl, you always get the cover art as well. Then the next step is to also have the physical copy, and of course many artists extend this by also releasing deluxe editions, box sets etc. with even more material.

For 95% of the music I buy, I'm satisfied with the music + cover art as a download. The remaining 5% are vinyl editions of my very favorite releases.
