BTW, Greg, I didn't know Vanishing Twin had a new album out. Will listen to it. Since you presented them before in these IA polls I have now two of their albums in my collection (on vinyl, because I also like the artwork)...

^ Nice. I also like the artwork. And I like the new album. It's more experimental sounding, I would say.

Finally I found the time to listen to all nominations consciously. This is a pretty good year; I also will have difficulties to select 20 for my albums of the year list. Same thing here, lots of tracks compete for the three votes.
I'm not going to vote for four great tracks for the reason that I discovered these albums independently of the poll, which are Squid, Zopp, Sufjan Stevens, and OGIVES. As always I'm rather happy to exclude them, because this makes the job easier. So here's my top 10 of the remaining entries; I like all of these: 10 Harp 9 Zaho de Sagazan 8 De Staat (this made me really curious of their album even though as a track it isn't quite up there) 7 The Chronicles of Father Robin 6 Go Go Machine Orchestra 5 Host 4 Edenya (very narrowly outside the top 3) ...and the top 3 are, in no particular order: Pixie Ninja - Alpha Waves Voyou - Huis Clos Canned Dream - Grandma's Funeral Thanks for participating, many exciting discoveries again. PS: Ah, I just see that I'm asked to give 3+2 votes, which means that Edenya and Host pick up their votes as well. Also I totally agree with Kees on the Uriah Heep, that was enjoyable, too.

thanks, George, nice to see you. A lot of things last months: illness, works, my little baby who wants to play more and more with her dad, and my novel still in search for an editor... hope to have come back here to stay.

Votes for sole picks
Aksak Maboul ( the song I liked the most) Voyou (the video I liked the most) Canned Dream (gotta love the weirdness) Bonus picks D'Virgillio, Morse and Jennings (old fashioned but I like it) Zah De Sagazan ( very 'hooky' electro pop) |

I had a wifi outage since Weds, with the ice storms that hit Portland on Tuesday, so excuse my delayed response. I'm grateful we did keep out power (and thus, heat)! I'm so glad you enjoyed the Harp track, I am just in love with this release. Piquing your interest is the point of sharing, so I'm very pleased!

By the way, I've opened a thread focused on a new Italian band here:

Good to see you, Lorenzo. I rather miss having a baby around despite the sleep disruptions and constant worrying. It did present some challenges for work.
The toddler years were magical for me with my children (now 16 and 20). I did check out that music, very interesting jazz/ fusion where the themes strongly resonate in the music. Quite powerful. I might respond there later if I can think of something substantial and reasonably intelligent-sounding to say. I don't think said artist is in PA; might want to consider suggesting it for here if you find that album suitable for JRF. ------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks y'all who contributed to this topic. I discovered lots of music to like. And if anyone here has not yet submitted their Album of the Year list and can do so, please do. You still have until the end of this month to do so and to edit your lists, and again has been opened to all (unlike it being made for collabs before). my daughter is three, her name is Alice. She loves White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Obviously.

^ Wonderful. It's one of my favourite songs. By the way, one of my dad's first gifts to my wife was Alice in Wonderland. Three can be such a wonderful age. My eldest was still two when I joined this site, and my other not yet conceived, how time flies.

I have some notes on my laptop, which I may get back to. Overall, enjoyed the various tunes. My votes:
For the ichibans: Grace Potter - Good Time: I do know this well, but wanted to give it a vote. I went on a 9-mile hike two weekends ago and this song resonated through my head and kept me going throughout. Grave Pleasures - Lead Balloons: Absolutely dig the throwback to the 80's electro-goth sound. Canned Dreams - Grandma's Funeral: Quirky, jazzy, and charming. Will check out some more of their stuff when I have chance. Nibans: Sufjan Stevens - Sh*t Talk Uriah Heep - Hail the Sunrise Thank you all! Edited by mathman0806 - January 23 2024 at 05:05 |
