Say goodbye to 2023, and celebrate 2023.

Welcome to another Interactive Poll, this time to celebrate the music of 2023. This poll is open to any tracks that were released and not archival from 2023 (Prog, not Prog). Because part of it is about listening to each other's choices (only the nominees are required to be listened to to participate), I would try to keep the tracks on the shorter side.

First comes the suggestions stage: In this you can mention as many tracks as you like, but please post no more than three videos per post as that can cause problems. Those tracks will be potential choices for nomination.

Then comes the nominations stage: After maybe two weeks, we each will choose which one to nominate from our mentions (or depending on numbers, I might make it two or even three tracks per person). And please try to keep your tracks under about ten minutes.

The comes the voting stage: Come voting time, after listening to the tracks in the playlist, you will choose three of those tracks to vote for. Vote for those in the poll and comment on those three.

Please post the name of the band and title of the song.

I will start with these three:

Susanne Sundfør "Blómi" (off Blómi)

Sprain "Man Proposes, God Disposes" (off The Lamb as Effigy)

Sufjan Stevens "sh*t Talk"

Here is a playlist of suggestions (potential nominations):

Here are the nominations with two lists, the first for expected listening with one choice per person, and the second being suggested listening, with the "second" choices from most contributors.

Please vote for three tracks that you you did not suggest from the first list (the number one or sole picks) and one can vote for another two from the bonus 2's).

The number one or sole picks

    Squid "The Blades"
Aksak Maboul "La parole de la peau"
    Pixie Ninja "Alpha Waves"
    Grace Potter "Good Time"
    Harp "Seven Long Suns"
    OGIVES "Mighty Pumpkin"
    Grave Pleasures "Lead Balloons"
    Zopp "Reality Tunnels"
The Chronicles of Father Robin "The Tale of Father Robin"
    Voyou "Huis Clos"
    Canned Dream "Grandma's Funeral"

Bonus 2's

    Sufjan Stevens "Sh*t Talk"
    Radian "Skyskryp12"
Go Go Machine Orchestra "Atom" (feat. Minyeh Hsien)
D'Virgilio Morse and Jennings "The Weary One"
    Edenya "Another Place"
    De Staat "Burning the Flag"
    Host "Tomorrow's Sky"
    Uriah Heep "Hail the Sunrise"
Zaho de Sagazan "Ne te regarde pas"

Here is the playlist of the nominations:

Nice! Thanks for putting one up Greg. I will need to give this some thought. I have tracks in mind but need to consider which ones.

Here 's Aksak Maboul; La parole de la peau

This album is such a delight! I had a very hard time to pick a track.

Thanks to the both of you. I wanted to do this when Nickie mentioned wanting to expose herself to more 2023 releases in the Album of the Year thread, and I find that a curated track can be a great way to introduce oneself to an album. It should help me to discover some more music from albums to listen to in full before the AOTY is officially finalised with results. And of course, the nice thing is that the AP chart includes any release from 2023, Prog or not, in PA or not. Love being able to add more than what is in PA to the list.

I loved listening to that Aksak Maboul track. That is one album I have been seriously into listen to properly since that would surely make my list and be high on it.

^ Yep, any track on or off the "Prog spectrum" as long as it was released in 2023 and is not an archival release, and is hopefully within about ten minutes (but there is flexibility).

I wasn't thinking of long songs anyway. Tongue

^ Opinions vary on how long must a song be to be considered long. It's kind of like the age old question, "How long is a piece of string?" I do have my own string theory.... And time is relative.

Seriously, I was not expecting a long song, but it can help to reiterate for any others who might participate. :)

I'll post a song from each of my top three, as shared with the Awesome Prog site, of favourites of the year.  I write mini-reviews on Bandcamp of the artist's whose material I purchase, choosing a "favourite track," as Bandcamp suggests, with the review.   I then play the material once a month on my Nickie's Niches show, there's a forum thread here on ProgArchives dedicated to the show under Prog Tribute Bands and Prog Radio.  I do also play non-Bandcamp artists.  That all being said, I will post my mini-review with each entry as well, and in reverse order of my favourites this past year.

As fate would have it, two of my actual favourite tracks are long, so found shorter tracks to represent those.

Secret Sky "Opium"  A collaboration of fine musicians I’ve had the pleasure of hearing for years with Loreena McKennitt. The electric guitar, in particular, is immediately recognizable in Hughes’ signature style and Lavelle’s rich cello and sultry voice are a perfect pairing. Rounding out the sound are violin, drums & percussion, bass, and lyra. This is an epicurean’s blend of world music, with the emphasis on Middle Eastern and Celtic, along with some jazz for complex flavour. A favourite release of the progressive folk/world genre this year.  Favorite track: Opium (chosen for brevity, actual favourite is the 7+minute Fear a Bhata):

Edenya "Another Place"  Edenya:  “Another Place” Very excited to bring this one to the poll, it’s just magnificent.  Just the kind of thing I always hope I’ll find, something that sounds really only like itself. To categorize, this is Progressive/Symphonic/Folk with more than a hint of psychedelia. The soaring, majestic vocals of  Clélia Lenoble are joined by the singularly named Marco on guitars and keyboards, creating a sound which is at once ancient, yet new again. The music is mostly cloudy in feel, dark and enchanting, and is quite unlike anything else I’ve encountered lately. There is a delicacy to it, however, they don’t hesitate to get heavy when it's called for. One of my favourite progressive releases of the year so far. Favourite Track: Inside Your Walls

Harp “Albion” Former Midlake singer, Tim Smith, has released this gorgeous debut. Like Midlake, the music is haunting and layered, but here, even more so.  There is an underwater and dreamlike feel to all of the pieces, as if Smith is perpetually drowning in the depths of his interior reflections. The prominent use of 12-string increases this effect, along with the hushed, achingly beautiful vocals. It would seem as if he lived and was reincarnated during the journey of this recording, judging by the lyrics of the first song to the last. A strong contender for my favourite release of this year, no matter what it is labeled.  Best heard in it's entirety, I feel as though every track is the best one.  Like a great book, I can't put this one down.  But choosing Seven Long Suns here.

^ Thanks all, and great to see the descriptions, Nicky. By the way, I have not yet taken the chance to listen to more than the first two suggestions not my own properly, and aside from really liking that Aksak Maboul track, I really like that Pixie Ninja track. Both I must admit, when I saw the name Tim Smith above I had a moment of unreasonable hopefulness. It's a good track not by the Tim Smith I think of when I think Tim Smith.

Yes, won't have a chance to listen until tomorrow, Tuesdays are very busy music days here, and don't want to listen while needing an ear palate cleanse!

Nice to start off the new year with an IA-poll! Thumbs Up

My first track is from my top album of 2023 (although I must admit that any of my top-8 could be on the top spot, but I sometimes prefer to put forward lesser known acts): La théorie des cordes - 4U-9525. I've plugged some tracks before on these boards, but it can't be enough.

La théorie des cordes - BCN - Terminale envolée:

Second suggestion, again an instrumental piece, by a well known artist but not that much talked about: Phil Manzanera with Andy Mackay and their album AM PM. An overall rather laid back album with wonderful instrumental tracks that combine some sonic experimentations with Manzanera's wonderful guitar work and Mackay's sax. Very accessible and very rich (and great production).

Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay - Blue Skies:

Third suggestion, a new band from Belgium with - thus - a new album, with an interesting fusion between chamber rock and post rock and some other things, from their album La mémoire des orages.

OGIVES - Mighty Pumpkin:

The razamataz is a pain in the bum

My second suggestion is also an instrumental. Go Go Machine Orchestra are from Taiwan. I suggested them for PA a few months back and it looks like they just cleared over at Awesomeprog.

They have two tracks on their album with a second version featuring Taiwanese saxophone player Minyen Hsieh. This is one of them.

Go Go Machine Orchestra - Atom (feat. Minyen Hsieh)

I have started listening to the suggested tracks and I am enjoying the variety.

On Greg's suggestions, sponsored by the letter S, Sprain is intriguing. I am still undecided on the vocals as that style often depends on my mood. I have in general been liking that arty post-punk style/sound that seems to getting some favor these days.

I am not that familiar with Susanne Sundfør's work. Her track is enjoyable but not standing out.

I have enjoyed Sufjan Steven's music over the years and this track holds up nicely. My favorite among Greg's suggestions as of now. I would like to hear it and the others within the scope of their respective albums if I have time. So much good music out there.

Yeah, I started listening and notating today.  Just made it through Greg's tracks, and noted yours, Christian's, and Kees into my word doc.  Busy week this week, but I find time here and there, scrinching up bits as my time allows.  Might be best to listen that way, anyway.  It's kind of funny to put forward "favourite albums," but have them represented by a song (although that is exactly what I do a lot of), and not have time to hear the whole albums.  However, the impetus to listen to more of those that catch my ear will certainly come out of this!

eMolecule - The Architect

the remnants of Sound Of Contact this has a more metal feel but keeps the sci-fi theme going. (and the singer does bare resemblance to Phil Collins, can't imagine why..)

Thanks for all of the submissions.

George, of the three of mine, Sufjan Steven's would be my choice too. As for Suanna Sundfor's tha songs had never impressed me much, but I was really enjoyed it the either day, and I did like the contrast it provided with the other two. I would think that some would think of my three entries as something of a sh*t sandwich, fairly palatable/ pleasant on the outsides and the inside (by Sprain) being very abrasive. I like Atom, by the way.

Frets N Worries: No frets nor worries, and I added "The Stardust Medley", which I had listened to before, to the playlist. I suggested about 10 minutes or less to make it easier to listen to music by others, but one need not listen to the initial suggestions anyway (that is optional), and some might mention more than others. I often adapt in these topics as I or others see potential improvements. Thinking about it now, I think it should be absolutely fine to mention longer tracks for the suggestion process, but I would like one to try to limit the actual nomination to a track of about ten or less minutes because I then ask people to check out all of the music. before voting for three (not your own choice). That does not mean you must always listen to every track in full if music clearly does not appeal, you might listen to the opening then bits throughout.

Richard: It's interesting to wake up and see you mention the Sea of Tranquility gang lists. I just read their albums of the year last night as I saw it linked to over at Progressive Ears (I don't post there yet) and was thinking how I shared none of the same choices. There are so many furrows to explore. If Squeaky Feet is not in PA and has not been suggested, then maybe it should be. That track seems pretty clearly to be Prog to me.

Referencing Hrychu's comment: One can vote on the awesomeprog list for non PA releases, and I mention ones in my list that are not in PA in the AOTY topic as well as in many places. Somebody has to be bring it up to have it included, and it seems no one has for that November, 17 release. had it come out earlier in the year then it is moire likely that it would have been suggested and talked about.

Having listened to the full album (which I hadn't done before posting the vid) I'm not that impressed tbh so I can see why it's not picking up any mentions. Great playing and stellar guitar work especially but lacking a bit in ideas. Would fit in Jazz fusion no doubt though but I'm not suggesting it!

SOT don't tend to put a lot of 'alternative' music on their lists, no mention of your beloved Swans for instance and there is a lot of Norwegian/Scandi retro prog. I have to admire Luis for sticking up for Roger Waters DSOTM redux. He is literally the only person I've come across that had done that! I quite like the banter element of their discussions and to be fair occasionally you do get a good recommendation although nowhere near as much as here. IMO

@ Logan:  I just read the above and am wondering if you can confirm up to 10 minute songs are OK?  If it's not too late I'd like to switch my Edenya song to the longer one, please let me know at your convenience.  I'm fine with the other two staying as is, and of course will keep the one to the shorter piece (I'd thought you'd mentioned 5 minutes or less in the OP, which may have changed since I saw it)

I had originally set it that songs should be under roughly ten minutes (I would not have minded somewhat longer), but have now decided to allow longer ones for the suggestions stage. If others want to listen to those long ones, or short ones, that's up to them. When we decide on the actual nominations for the poll, then I would like them to be on the shorter side (say less than roughly ten minutes in length) since for that part I do hope that all participants in the poll will check out the music before voting for the three choices not their own.

And since people can mention as many as they like for the suggestions stage, feel free to have posted both Edenya songs if you like instead of changing it. That's up to you.

Here's another from me

Thank you, Logan!  I will indeed change to the longer tune, as it's really my favourite, and I feel it shows their scope.  Secret Sky and Harp will remain the same.  I may come up with suggestions, but I know it's harder for people to listen to more, and, as one of mine IS long, won't do that at this time. I will make the change on my post on Page One, if you can delete and switch the longer Edenya track into the YT playlist, I will be thankful.

I';ll have to listen to Roger Waters DSOTM redux. While I had a withering experience with him at a hotel restaurant in Warsaw (my fault for mixing multiple Valium and alcohol), I have not liked how hard people have been on him. But I won't get into that here.

here is the page with lists that I read last night: https://www.seaoftranquility.org/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=316" rel="nofollow - https://www.seaoftranquility.org/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=316

It seems that they are more symphonic and melodic rock/ metal oriented than I am.

I think we get a healthy amount of diversity at Prog Archives.

Oh, and speaking of my beloved Swans (beautiful and ornery critters), here is "Ebbing" off The Beggar.

The temptation is too great that I must follow up Greg's post of Swans (more of the S sponsorship) with Geese.

4D Country is off of their EP 4D Country. The song is a slightly extended reworking of their song 3D Country from the full length album 3D Country. Both released in 2023. One of my favorite non-prog releases of 2023.

I haven't seen Deerhoof mentioned a lot here, they certainly deserve more attention. Even though I don't yet appreciate every single track on their 2023 album Miracle-Level, as a whole it is quite a ride, eclectic and wild, and the more I listen to it, the more I love it.

My takes on everything from Page One.  Please excuse how the format looks once I post it, I adjusted it when entering, but have no idea how to make the format look like what my posting looks like before I actually post it.

Greg                                                                                                                                              Susanne Sundfør "Blómi" (off Blómi) Female singer/songwriter. Beautiful song of hope in the face of despair, has a sense of a spiritual, especially when the choral parts kick in.  Saxophone is an addition to the piano, bass and drums. A reminder that when all seems lost, it’s often not so, a new day will dawn, winter will turn to summer again.
Sprain "Man Proposes, God Disposes" (off The Lamb as Effigy)  Singsong/rap piece, discordant whanging guitars.  Nightmarish atmosphere, a rant on life, human and animal, with everything being turned upside down and inside out recurrent throughout.  Is our world really this crazy? Probably.                                  Sufjan Stevens "sh*t Talk"  Male singer/songwriter, delicate soft vocals, acoustic guitar and lilting piano.  Wistful.  Wondering if what he gave was enough, and knowing it’s too late, anyway.  Banjo being lightly plucked, it would seem.  Choral elements, that add a chorus of children’s voices, lending a sense of innocence.
Christian:                                                                                                                                           Aksak Maboul; La parole de la peau  Very French and whimsical, sense of absurdism, light and summery.  Are they singing about something dismal, or does it suit the lyrics?).  The voices are lilting, with sax drifting in and out, effected piano or organ follows the vocal melody for a bit.  The music fades out with the vocals.  Soundtrack to a bit of film-type music.
George:  Pixie Ninja “Alpha Waves”  Love the ominous and repetitious sound here.  Preciesely what I like in ambient music. The tension with the build is just tremendous.  Moves into some plinkiness, but the nightmare isn’t over, as drums come a bit to the fore.  The ending kind of bleeps out with robotic vocalisations.                                                                                                                                      Go Go Machine Orchestra - Atom (feat. Minyen Hsieh) Minimalist rock, this piece starts out a bit jazzy, with horns, then electric guitar kicks in and out of the mix, changing the feel to more experimental. Plenty of changes, a section with marimba/vibes and guitar, with sax swirling in for the ride. Another very enjoyable selection of yours, to my ears.
Alan B:
Grace Potter  “Good Time” Rocky/countryish, poppy, a bit of a commentary on pandemic rules,  Follows a standard country rock verse/chorus/verse/bridge/verse etc construction to the song.  I could hear this getting played all over Nashville.                                                                                                      D'Virgilio Morse and Jennings “The Weary One”  Throwback to 70s CSN-type harmonies (which are lovely) with confessions-style lyrics. Really nice singer/songwrite stuff.  I do have problems (like many) with the sometimes preachiness of Morse, but this song is not overtly using that kind of message.  Like many of  the CSN era, it is a heartfelt introspection piece, nicely done.                                                                    Neal Morse  “Slave Boy”  Rocky with the kind of rough, rock-ish female vocal of the sort in the first piece.  Concept album, I’m assuming.  This, being about Joseph, I would guess, is overall more openly using religious themes.  This is very oppositional to the previous track, being heavy-ish rock, with lots of heavy wah-wah electric guitar, drums, etc.  Male (Morse) and female (?) vocals.

Kees:                                                                                                                                               La théorie des cordes - BCN - Terminale envolée: This is lovely jazz-ish ambient music. Keyboards, bass, guitar, drums.  It moves from a slower tempo beginning up into a quicker one, with the musical accents becoming more punctuative (I don’t think that’s a word, but it sums up how I feel the music is).  Guitar comes to the fore, with the music becoming more forceful, then back to the original feel of quiet contrmplation.  Nice!                                                                                                                            Phil Manzanera & Andy Mackay  - Blue Skies Wangly guitars and blips, easing into a groove with saxophone.  The groove continues with pointy lead guitar, sax jamming, back and forth, with the whirly blips continuing, ending with some slowdown and fadeout.                                                                            OGIVES  -  Mighty Pumpkin  Chamber piece, subdued vocals, absurdist sort of song.  Instrumentation is guitar, bass, drums, some keyboards, and horns.  Has a bit of a hypnotic feel, which might become an earworm, whether you like it or not.

I will get to each page separately, so further entrants/suggestions will show up, don't worry, those of you who've added since Page One

^ Thanks, Nickie. Great job as always.

I;m sorry for not being more detailed and for being kind of off-the-wall...

Christian

- Aksak Maboul " La parole de la peau" -- I really love this, and it does remind me of lots of French music I love. and I know you don't like Stereolab much, but it does have that kind of vibe, and like some Melody's Echo Chamber, and the singer from Stereolab guests on the album. It has a lovely 60s to early 70s classic chanson feel with electronics. It actually reminds me very much of a song that is on the tip of my brain. I think from the late 60s or early 70s. The closest I can think of now is Karl-Heinz Schäfer's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBjL3O_l7tI" rel="nofollow - Les Gants Blancs Diables's Couleurs
- Deerhoof "Momentary Art of Soul!" - I have not listened to much Deerhoof, but I absolutely love that!

George
- Pixie Ninja "Alpha Waves" - I won't try to describe it, but I really dig this.
- Go Go Machine Orchestra "Atom" (feat. Minyen Hsieh) -- and I really like this.
- Jack O' the Clock "The Ladder Slipped" - I like this.
- Geese "4D Country" - I thought this might be fowl, but it's very good

My particular faves of yours are the Pixie Ninja and Go Go Machine ones. My vote would Go Go to the Machine. Fantastic track.

Alan
- Grace Potter "Good Time" - this reminds me of some kind of Nashville cabaret act. It is giving me Let's Do The Time Warp again vibes from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Fun! I could imagine Tim Curry's Dr Frank N. Furter appearing in the video.
- D'Virgilio Morse and Jennings "The Weary One" - Wait is that Fank N Furter? Ah, no, it's Neal Morse. ;) Very CSNY styled, and not something I would expect in any local cabarret.
- Neal Morse "Slave Boy" - was worried aince I am not into bondage stuff, but I need not have worried.
Grace Potter's would be my choice of your three.

Nickie
- Secret Sky "Opium"
- Edenya "Another Place"
- Harp "Albion"

I like all three but my choice would be Harp's Albion"

Kees
- La théorie des cordes "BCN - Terminale envolée"
- Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay "Blue Skies"
- OGIVES "Mighty Pumpkin"

I like all three, but "Mighty Pumpkin" is especially mighty fine for my tastes.

Cristi
- Riverside "Friend or Foe?"
- 66Crusher "Phantom"
- Host "Tomorrow's Sky"

Host takes it for me, that has a kind of sound I have been very into.

Richard
- Uriah Heep "Hail the Sunrise
- eMolecule "The Architect"
- Squeaky Feet "Little Bit Further"

Yeah, that Uriah Heep has a definitite Spinal Tap feel, which is not bad for me, because I love SPinal Tap, and not just for the humour but the music itself, and I love it unironically. eMolecule is a local to me band but it's too much of an alt metal kind for me (i obviously like lots of alternative music). Reminds me not just of Riverside, but of music by another local to me band (the drummer was my neighbour), Nickelback. I really like Squeaky Feet and that is my clear fave of your selections.

Tennyson
- Atmos "The Stardust Medley"

I'd heard this before and really like it.

Me
- Susanne Sundfør "Blómi" - my fave on the album is "Ṣānnu yārru lī" but decided to share something I have not shared at the forum before
- Sprain "Man Proposes, God Disposes" - abrasive and sweary, great start to an album! :D
- Sufjan Stevens "Sh*t Talk" - talking of sweary. I really love Sufjan Stevens music.
- Swans "Ebbing" - it's my favourite of my selections, over ten minutes, but not by very much, but I feel it's too known for me to choose to nominate
- Bob Drake "The Medium's House" - I actually would have gone for another track from it had it been on youtube.

Glad you liked Host. It's one of my most played song of the year LOL, the whole album it comes from is great.

It's Nick Holmes and Greg Macintosh of Paradise Lost and the project is named after their 1999 album Host (which I think you would enjoy as well). It was the band's "synth phase" which some metalheads disliked, that's why Paradise Lost returned to their metal roots.

But as the two musicians seemed to have liked creating that sound, they released new music under the "Host" name. Tongue

Thank you for your thoughts, Greg.  Albion is my favourite of the year, it's not flashy, but it is just sublime, and I just can't stop listening to it.  Daughters of Albion is one of the highlights, with the message it conveys, but I used a longer track for an introduction.  There are beautiful instrumental tracks as well.

Page Two and Page Three (To Christian/Deerhoof)  Again, please pardon formatting.

Cristi:                                                                                                                                                Riverside “Friend or Foe?” I am a fan of Riverside, so am familiar with this one, and like it a lot. AS you probably remember, I’m not big on most metal or heavier bands, but Riverside is one of my favourite acts.  This tune hearkens back to some 80’s elements, flipping back and forth from guitar forward to keyboard forward.  Their work is always meticulous and varied, and this one is no exception.  I haven’t yet decided if I’ll do my usual and not vote if I know a piece already, we’ll see how much ends up being familiar as the poll grows.                                                                                                                                                66 Crusher "Phantom" Metallic progressive band here, starting out on the more subdued and slowly heavy end of the genre.  Like so many Norwegian bands, the vocals are really well done, these are in a what I call a “washed,” style, layered thick and watery all at once.  As promised the “metal” kicks in about halfway in, and that is where they kind of lose me, but I’m sure it’s what fans were waiting for.  They go back to the palette of the first part, which is more pleasing to my ear. Ends in some soaring lead guitar, to a fade.                                                                                                                                                                HOST “Tomorrow’s Sky”  Another throwback to 80s style, with keyboards plinking along and gated reverb style drums.  These vocals are also in a “washed” effect, which I really enjoy, no matter the genre, but these have that sort of clipped-off speech that was prominent in the 80s.  The music is very angular,  and bleak, as was much of thedarker stuff in the 80s, but this is heavier than that style, overall.

Richard:                                                                                                                                              Uriah Heep  “Hail The Sunrise” Veterans Uriah Heep return with their signature style of heaviness, this one a tune about erecting stone circles and Druidry, the chorus exhorts to hail the sunrise and praise the solstice.  Heavy guitars, bass, and drums and organ throughout with guitars and organ coming to the fore from time to time.  Strident vocals that are slightly higher than mid-range.  Usual structure verse/chorus/bridge etc to song.                                                                                                            EMOLECULE “The Architect”  More heavy prog rock here, repeating thick guitar chords, with deeply laden drums (drums are a bit Bill Ward-ish, very ‘eavy, as Bill would say), and bass.  About halfway in, they choose to do a bit of solo acoustic guitar, a creative touch I found enjoyable, although they did do a talking part, which I typically don’t like, but it was well done here.  Vocals are in that layered style that we hear much of these days, which I like, it adds another element to a heavy piece when it’s done.  And it comes back in spades, after the delicate/spoken bridge, to the end.                                                                          Squeaky Feet “Little Bit Further”  This band is getting a lot of attention right now, with this release.  They are on the heavier end as well, of prog, and toss in a lot of changes in this piece.  Starting on the heavy end, they have severals nice quiet sort of breaks, with some vibe-sounds (probably done on a keyboard?).  The vocals are well done whether on the heavy end or the softer side.  They deftly move back and forth, kind of several songs within one (at least for this example that we are given).  Several adept lead guitar breaks during the piece, this band doesn’t stay too long in one place, and they end on a bombastic note.  Perhaps restless feet 😉.

FretsNWorries                                                                                                                                      Atmos “The Stardust Medley”  Definitely a concept piece, at 22 minutes.  I do have a long attention span (those who have been in these polls a long time might remember I did listen to ALL 45 minutes of I Am Sitting In A Room, it is fascinating for those who don’t mind hanging out a while).  I’m wondering if this will all be spoken on top of the music, guess we’ll find out.  I would say that this is a sort of audio short story, with accompanying music, with no singing.  7 minutes in, it gets more interesting for me, with bass, guitar, and quiet percussion picking up the pace in a pleasing groove.  I can’t say for sure that I would want to listen repeatedly, as with a musical piece, but it is certainly unlike anything else brought here so far.

These next pollsters are also on page One, reviewed already for those pieces.
Mike:                                                                                                                                                  Jack O’ the Clock “The Ladder Slipped” I like the opening, that kind of echo-y plucked banjo is always pleasing to my ear when played this way.  Not sold on the singer, but he’s quirky, and this is a quirky song, about falling off a ladder, and the consequences.  It gets nice and dissonant, then goes into some tasty electric guitar, and lovely violin skitters along.  Well mixed, you can hear all of the things going on distinctly.  I have gone back and forth with this release, outside of this poll, sometimes it appeals to me, sometimes not.  This one piece I found very enjoyable.                                                                                                          Suggestion:                                                                                                                                        Geese “4D Country”  Deep voiced kind of singsong vocal, alt country/Americana.  As the vocalist begins to sing, his voice gets a little higher, than when he was speaking.  Female chorus kicks in as the song builds.  Honky tonk piano tinkling by a little.  Nice guitar elements.  Definitely could hear this on a Nashville jukebox, or stage downtown.  Clever idea to follow Greg’s Swans with your Geese, I’m flipping them here.

Greg:                                                                                                                                                  Suggestions:                                                                                                                                      Bob Drake “The Medium’s House” Piece starts out really wonky, kind of like a skipping record effect.  Whirly organ and edgy guitar, some slide-y violin.  Lots of spookiness in the medium’s house.  Whangling. feedbacking guitar, to acoustic fingerpicking and whispery vocals, back to whangling of all sorts, very discordant.  Sounds like everyone got out of there just in time.                                                                  Swans “Ebbing”   This one I’ve heard here and there.  Organ and swirly guitars, almost like disturbed bees.  Male vocals with strummed guitar in a sort of march.  Keyboards of some sort make a nice flute-y accompaniment to the steady pace forward.  Children in a chorus are added to the vocals.  Makes me think of a sea chanty on valium (I guess, hence the title).   Gets a little stormy halfway in, or getting farther out to sea.  Eventually, they sail on into the horizon.

Christian:                                                                                                                                        Deerhoof “Momentary Art of Soul!” They waste no time getting into the piece, high-voiced female Japanese-language choir, then guitars begin whanging away, both in a repetitive manner.  They continue in this manner, with the melody shifting.  The women leave the room and the repetitive melody continues on, with cymbal crashes.  One of the women comes back and adds her two cents.  Abrupt end.

^^ Thanks Cristi, I iull look into that.

^ And thanks for that list with descriptions, Nicki. What I have heard of Albion is really lovely, even sublime as you say.

As there is no limit to how many, it would be remiss for me not to mention a Beach House track. Since last summer, Beach House has been one of the most played bands for me -- 2012's Bloom is a masterpiece and I love last year's Once Twice Melody. RYM describes the Beach House music overall as Dream Pop, Indie Pop, Neo-Psychedelia, Shoegaze, Indietronica. It was recommended to me by the youtube algorithm due to me listening to Weyes Blood (I adore Weyes Blood), although I would sooner related Weyes Blood to something like Julia Holter. This year Beach house released the EP, Become. Here I will choose a very relaxing, pretty and dreamy song off it. This, or another off it, might well be my nomination because of how important to me Beach House has been in 2023.

I need to post this, my favourite album of the year, this track especially blew me away

Also surprised that while people are going 'ape' over the Scandi prog bands, this Brazilian band are being largely overlooked. They have a beautiful almost Italian style of prog going on IMO.

^ I had wanted to mention Vanishing Twin is this, but the retro qualities of those tracks brought me to want to bring into this the different retro-ness of Vanishing Twin at this time.

Vanishing Twin - Lotus Eater

And I will pair that with a recent listen of mine, which I might well nominate.

Xiu Xiu - Esquerita, Little Richard

Nickie and Greg. Thanks for your feedback! The instrumental tracks had their electronic blips that Nickie captured well.

2023 had a number of instrumental albums that I really enjoyed.

Yeah, it can get tricky describing instrumentals, without just writing about what instruments are played!  LOL

Would asking people to have their nominations chosen by next Monday be good? Maybe list two, but in order of preference.

And nice to see the Interactive Epics poll revived (with different variations on the usual rules), which I had missed. I like it when related topics are active at the same time. I chose a 20 minute plus track for that which I much prefer by Sprain (I went for the one in this topic due to its relative brevity and I like the contrast with the other two I first presented).

I had the resolution to mention a non-prog (not on PA) album. My first idea would've been Sprain, but Greg nominated them already.

Now I know that there's a new Radian album out called Distorted Rooms. Radian is one of the very few bands that can do no wrong for me (you may remember I had them in the Interactive Polls issue where the task was to present a band). Here's Skyskryp12.

PS: I have been travelling, therefore no commentaries up to now. Thanks to all who wrote something (let's see whether I still can do that with one week time)! Next Monday is OK as deadline.

^ and there's another album for me to pay close attention to. Great music. For me, each of your choices has been a winner for me. Terrific. I like what you chose more than what I chose, in fact. As for Sprain, I suggested it and it looks like it will be accepted for Avant Prog. Hoping to add it before the end of this month. I just looked at the awesomeprog.com chart and see they did clear it, so I will add Sprain soon. Glad your post made me think to check that site's PA chart.

Although I shared this when it was quite new in another poll, I will mention this again as one of my favourites of the year.

ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT "The Sons and Daughters of Poor Eternal" (off Darling the Dawn)

And here is another of my favoourites

Squid "The Blades" (off O Monolith)

Reminder to all who participated, I hope to have the poll up by this coming Monday, then when the poll is up, vote for and list in a post three choices that are NOT your own. For those with multiple mentions, please list a top two or more of your choices in order of preference. Note that if your choice is considerably longer than ten minutes (I would not care with 11 minutes or so), then I would rather not include it and ask for another track.

And it's lovely to welcome some people who have not been regulars to these into the fold. I hope all with selections for nomination do participate in the listening and voting process.. Italian member Lorenzo started these some years ago, and it took on real life as others starting following suit with more polls, and bringing in their own twists and flavours to the proceedings, and it became its own little community at Prog Archives with participants who made these topics and voted in other peoples topics.   It's a neat way to expose yourself to music you might not usually hear, and sometimes it may be too far out of your comfort zone, but I figure us progressive music fans commonly are kind of used to challenging ourselves and being exposed to a very wide variety of music. Oops, starting to sound kind of preachy.... Enjoy, or not.    Thanks to all who posted selections.

While I have a playlist now for all of the selections so far in the opening post, once our choices are finalised, I will make a new playlist, just of the nominees, and put those choices in the poll.

Oh, and if anyone wants to mention music not for nomination, be it too long or they just don't want to participate in the listening/ voting process, please let me know and I would still like to check out what you like and I will add it to the all-tracks playlist even if not to the poll.

Here is my sure favourite from Sprain's The Lamb as Effigy which is out of competition as it is is over 20 minutes long. That and The Beggar Lover (Three) are two particular favourite epics of mine -- I posted this Sprain track in the Interactive Epics poll recently, but I want to post it here too.

^Just listened to this for the first and really liked it. Very Swans-like in that post-expansive sort of way.

I might post a couple more tracks for fun. My Amazon had been throwing in a number of art punk/post punk releases from 2023. Haven't listened to the complete albums, but I am enjoying.

I wonder if that style is just been rising or just that Amazon keyed in on some albums that I listened to.

For fun. I have 3 tracks in a mini-playlist. All from 2023 of various degrees of post-punkiness. I deliberately chose songs with videos as it makes me think back to how I explored new music through videos on MTV in the early 80s.

First band Model/Actriz is from the U.S. Second band Shame is from England, and third band Cable Ties is from Australia.

OK I'll start

From my choices I nominate 1st choice Grace Potter as she had a couple of positive comments on here. 2nd choice the D'Virgilio Morse and Jennings song.

^ Alan: Thanks, you're in poll position number one with Grace Potter, and we have D'V/M/J as an additional. I'll add the actual poll when all have been decided. I am thinking that I will place the first pick in the first section of the poll, and have second choices in the second half as a "bonus" (optional to listen and vote for the bonuses).

-----------------------------------

^^ George: I like post-punk a lot and enjoyed all of those (music and the videos). Model/Actriz's "Crossing Guard" I especially am into and would go to my favourites of the year. Great stuff, thanks.

-----------------------------------

^^^ Cristi: Lead Balloons is awesome! Love it. Definitely going on my personal playlist for the very best of the year.

-----------------------------------

I have opted to choose two (I can't say for sure I wont change my mind).

May be a bit too on the known side with some here (as knownness can discourage votes), but I'm going with Squid "The Blades" as choice one, and Sufjan Stevens "sh*t Talk" as choice two.

-----------------------------------

Here's a playlist for nominations which I will be updating as we go on, as well as updating the playlist with all choices in my opening post.

-----------------------------------

And here's another choice form from a very big name from the 80s -- Music for the Masses (1987) and Violator from 1990 are the two from DM that I have heard the most -- Depeche Mode "Ghosts Again" off Momento Mori, which is an album, like every other one represented here by me with a track, on my Albums of the Year list.

^ It's a very fine song, one of my favourite that I've heard from DM. I think it's a fine album.

"Before We Drown" is another particular favourite of mine from the album.

My choices would be in opposite order from my post on page one (which actually keeps Edeny at the second choice spot).  Although I think that Edenya will interest more prog fans,  I am sticking with the Harp piece as my first choice to nominate, as it is my favourite release of the year.  I would hope that if any of the three individual tracks I proposed from the longer releases piques an interest, they might garner a full listen, and, hopefully, a sale for the artist.

1.  Harp "Albion" ~ Seven Long Suns

2.  Edenya "Another Place" ~ Inside Your Walls

I'm looking at my AOTY list and I can't think of a single song I could take away from the album. I'll have to nominate something that isn't Prog so here's a song I heard a few times on the radio and a lot more in my head 😅

Voyou - Huis Clos

Samuel, I can't "see" that one (so, also, can't hear it).  Can you advise on the artist name and title (or another source, such as Bandcamp?)

My choices are my first in that order.

1. Pixie Ninja - Alpha Waves
2. Go Go Machine Orchestra - Atom (feat. Minyeh Hsien)

But, the other two as well could be there.

Greg - Glad you liked the post-punk trio of songs. I really like the sound and industrial layers of Model/Actriz.

One more from 2023. I picked this video to show the unique instrumentation. I haven't ranked it yet among my 2023. The band consists of two bassists, a drummer, and a musician playing one of his two handmade instruments.

Wananabani-en - Door Door

The homemade instrument used here is called the Ribbon Controller.

Here are descriptions copied from Bandcamp.

Kaisatsuko:
Electric two strings upright fiddle made in 2003. It is not performed with a bow. The rotating wheel (which is rotated by his handling) rubs strings and makes sound like Hurdy-Gurdy.

The translation of the word is as follows:
Kai = Rotation Satsu = Rub Ko = Oriental fiddle
-----
Ribbon Controller
Electric musical instrument which can change an oscillator pitch smoothly, depending on the place which you press down. Ribbon Controller was originally made as a kind of MOOG SYNTHESIZER's controller in late 60's. Yuichi made this following MOOG’s example and self learned to play it.

Sorted through to find additional "regular" entries, here are my takes on those:

Christian:                                                                                                                                                                          Radian:  “Skyskryp12” Experimental electronica here  Goes back and forth from blips and waaahhhs to almost but not quite melody, played on vibes.  Some electric guitar wanders in and about.  This generally keeps going throughout the piece, with occasional zipper-like noises and some bomps of percussion.  The electric guitar swoops in and out, almost like it’s in a different distorted room than this piece is, but once in a while, someone opens the door and lets some of it drift in.  Intensifies about 5/8ths in.  The payoff of being patient is nice, they apparently finally invited the guitarist in, and the drums become more intense, ending with almost a gong-like crescendo.

PAGE 4

Samuel:                                                                                                                                                                                 Voyou “Huis Clos”  Very French, upbeat ditty.  Sound very summery to me, summer on the beach although the video shows a placid streamside.  Wonder what he’s musing about, since I don’t speak French.  There is a nice horn section that comes along, the bridge seems as though it maybe isn’t as peaceful in his mind (perhaps echoing the visual of the bridge in the video, with a stand of dark trees next to it. Nice song, it has also a cinematic quality to it.   I find I’m right, here is a translation in English to the lyrics:  https://www.musixmatch.com/lyrics/Voyou-1/Huis-clos/translation/english

PAGE 5

Hrychu:                                                                                                                                                                              ERA “Amena”  This is quite beautiful, are they singing in Latin, perhaps?  Could be Italian?  I looked up the band name and find that th ais is the work of a single composer from France, and the composer often uses an imaginary language, similar to Latin.  Extra points!  They describe him as being “New Age,” a genre of which I’m not overly fond, as it’s too sweet/preachy to me in general.  I dol like music that blends some of those elements, though.  But… it’s not from this past year?  Anyway, I do love the music regardless.  My kind of stuff!

^ Do you have any track choices to share from 2023? You can share in the thread without participating in the listening and voting if you don't want to fully participate. IT;s nice to get a wider variety of people sharing music even if some are more casual and not joining in on the poll itself.

^ Thank you very much, Nickie. It's been a real pleasure and I very much appreciate your write-ups on selections. And I hope you find the time to do one ere long.

------------------------------------------------

^^ And thank you, Tennyson. Lovely short track which has now been added to the playlists. No pressure on the listening and voting, by the way, happy to have you on board as a contributor.    That's a popular album in these parts that I still have yet to listen to, so I was very happy to get that taster.

------------------------------------------------

General note: I have been thinking about separating the numbers ones and number twos (sorry if that sounds confusing; not talking liquids and solids) in the poll for those who have multiple nominations (the two choices) making voting for three of the ones, and then maybe having the twos as bonuses. Or maybe two of the ones and one of the twos. :) Sorry, I know it's nice to have that set out from the go, but I do like to improvise a bit.   I think three ones and one two, which sounds a bit like learning to dance.

Thanks to everyone who has participated.

Here are the final two up, that I've not given my two cents on yet:

Greg: Squid:  “The Blades”  Hybrid of post punk and post rock, kind of almost-monotone vocal, but not really, just sort of snarly.  Definitely gets more punky about 2 mins in, as far as the vocals.  The music is not really punky, though, it’s more slip-sliding about, more like post rock.  Closes in a spoken part that fades into a whisper.

Frets N Worries: The Chronicles of Father Robin “The Tale of Father Robin”  I like this genre, prog folk mixed in with classic prog elements.  This is an introduction to a concept release, which I’ve heard here and about, in pieces.  It has a nice medieval feel to it, and does it’s job of making one want to hear more.

^ Thanks. Squid is kind of unpleasant, but I like it. I could say much the same of Squid Game (although I like Squid Game more still).

By the way, for those with more than two entries, if a number one and number two (seriously, get you minds out of the gutter!) has not been selected by early Monday PST, then I will just go with your first two tracks.

I could do some listening (great stuff all around) but there's currently so much to do that I can't comment. May comment later on the things I vote for.

Nominations:
(1) Aksak Maboul
(2) Radian
Personally I can't rank my three, but I thought the Deerhoof track may annoy some (though not me), and I put Radian behind Aksak Maboul just because I had Radian already in an earlier interactive poll.

From superficial listening I'm sure that the Pixie Ninja track is for me, but many others are still in the mix, some not having had the deserved attention.
