My non-prog album of the year (or one of them) is by De Staat, untitled, but referred to as Red Yellow Blue. It is actually three mini-albums of which each reflect a stylistic tendency of the band: a darker side (Red), a more joyful side (Yellow) and a more contemplative side (Blue). OK, if they wish; it all remains very recognizably De Staat. So, one of each colour: De Staat - Burning the Flag (Red): De Staat - Peace, Love and Profit (Yellow): De Staat - Running Backwards Into the Future |

Logan, would it be possible to change the Grace Potter video on the playlist to the one I originally posted, please? The one you posted is the official video, but it's actually an edited version of the album track, with a bit of speech added at the beginning and a couple of lines and chorus omitted.

^ I forgot to mention. I added the other to the playlist because the one you posted was not showing up for me (it's a region restricted thing, so I could not tell which version you posted). Actually, there is a way that I can post that despite me being unable to watch it. I will try to find an album version that works here. It's often an issue that one video works somewhere and another video works elsewhere.
It seems that it is Saturday Sessions: Grace Potter performs "Good Time" or it might be re-directecd but the uploader did not make that available in Canada. Was that the one you uploaded? Or is it off the album? I have now replaced it with this longer one, hope this works for all. Edited by Logan - January 13 2024 at 10:19 |

Thanks Logan, that's fine, it's the album track and the one I uploaded was a live performance which was essentially the same.
Strange that the other video wasn't available in Canada. It's obviously from America but I can watch it in the UK so why can't America's nearest neighbour see it?

And despite (limited) free trade agreements and an outwardly friendly attitude to each other, we can be uncomfortable neighbours. The plans: Edited by Logan - January 13 2024 at 13:33 |

^ Such plans for Canadian World Domination illustrate our manifest destiny and our birthright; a beaver on every nickel and a Bieber on every world music chart.

Hello everyone and happy New Year! I just came back from my holidays and stopped by here. It's been a while and I'm pleased to see that the IA-polls are still going on. I hope I'm not late and there are still a few spots available, Greg? I haven't got round to sorting my 2023 material yet. In fact, I usually sort them by music genre or by origins of the artist/band rather than by release date. But well, here are two acts that came to mind spontanously. Some jazz fusion from Shanghai. Canned Dream: Grandma's Funeral (Album: Family, 04.02.2023) And a new voice bringing fresh air into the French music scene. The song is off her debut album which she released only last year. Zaho de Sagazan: Ne te regarde pas (Album: La symphonie des éclairs, 31.03.2023) I actually had i.a. some contemporary classical/experimantal music in mind but I don't want to annoy anyone with too heavy a load, unless someone wishes otherwise. ^ So good to see you, Mila. Happy New Year/Kung Hei Fat Choi. It's absolutely not too late and even if were past the official deadline, I happily would extend it for you. The poll will go up tomorrow. I really like both of your number one and two choices. I would like to hear more from you if you wish to share. In this we can mention as many as we like, but nominate up to two, a number one pick and a number two pick. I'm happy if even after nominations are up people keep on mentioning tracks. It's up to people if they want to listen, but I know that I would like to listen.

^ Hey Greg, great to see you too! I hope you're doing all right? I'm glad to be part of your poll. I have plenty of 2023 material but haven't sorted it yet. I have some stuff that doesn't quite meet the criteria e.g. in terms of length and also I listen to various genres that are not of interest here really.
But ok. I was e.g. thinking of a Swiss composer of contemporary classical music. An orchestra from my city that plays contemporary classical and experimental music, has released an album with some of his works last year. On that album they play a new piece (the composer is still active) and three older ones which is in fact of lesser importance with classical music. They are all longer than 10 min. This one here is the shortest (10:25). But I have to warn you, it's pretty intense. lol Dieter Ammann: Core, performed by Basel Sinfonietta Edited by Mila-13 - January 14 2024 at 06:11 |

My take on Kees' decision to choose De Staat – “Burning the Flag”
Alt Rock starts with repetitive whonking guitars and spoken vocals,
pretty much a rap sort of piece. Definitely prefer Ogives of the two, but the first would be my favourite, although not chosen. However! Most people may feel very differently!
and Mila's 3: Mila:
Canned Dream: “Grandma's Funeral” Lone saxophone, then some dissonant jazz chords
and flute-y sounds (on synths? Although there is a flautist in the video, at
the funeral procession). Female spoken
vocals, in a desultory manner. After
vocals, some discordant sax and guitar. Zaho
de Sagazan: “Ne te regarde pas” Electronica
elements, with spoken French vocals at first, becoming a bit more melodic
vocally, going into layered spoken vocals.
Dark feel to the track. Both of
these have first two have a certain detached feel to me. Dieter
Ammann: Core, performed by Basel Sinfonietta: This has an ominous sort of start,
orchestral, draws me in. Strings come
in, some discordant, with some strong embellishments, as the music crescendos,
into a maelstrom of sound. The piece
settles in for a bit, still swirling, but taking more solid form. And continues thus, would make a nice horror
soundtrack. Preferred this to the other
two. |

Still time for others to join should they so desire. If there are any changes and finalisations, and/or I made mistakes, please point them out ASAP. Your "sole choice" or "number one plus number two" nominations will be entered in the poll. Thanks to all, and I hope to heave this poll up in about 17-18 hours. At that time I plan to make the sole plus number one choices as expected listening and then have the number two choices as bonuses which also can be voted on. Then comes the really hard part as I really like the playlist and would want to vote for many. |

And, since I only reviewed the first set of contenders, not the "suggestions," here is my review of Zopp, for Richard:
I am cheating a bit due to
time constraints, but here is my review of the full album, since I am very
familiar with it. Zopp’s sophomore full release is just as full
of Canterbury, jazz, and avant rock as their first. Comprised of multiple
keyboards, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, percussion, saxes, flutes, and
French horns, there is plenty of variety here. With the addition of male and
female vocals the music is also showing some elements of neo-prog, as the
creation of multi-instrumentalist and composer Ryan W Stevenson morphs and
matures. My favorite track: Bushnell Keeler.

And my take on Cristi's extra suggestion that has become a nomination for him: Grave Pleasures – “Lead Balloons” Post rock (starts off kind of metal-ly, but moves off from there) with a common theme heard in the genre, a bleak apocalyptic
scene. I like the singer’s tonality and
voice, it stands out, I also enjoy the washy guitars in this setting. Nice choice.

The poll is up. Thanks to all.
Below are the nominations with two lists, the first for expected listening with one choice per person, and the second being suggested listening, with the "second" choices from most contributors. Please vote for three tracks that you you did not suggest from the first list (the number one or sole picks) and one can vote for another two from the bonus 2's -- this part is optional. The number one or sole picks
Aksak Maboul "La parole de la peau" Pixie Ninja "Alpha Waves" Grace Potter "Good Time" Harp "Seven Long Suns" OGIVES "Mighty Pumpkin" Grave Pleasures "Lead Balloons" Zopp "Reality Tunnels" The Chronicles of Father Robin "The Tale of Father Robin" Voyou "Huis Clos" Canned Dream "Grandma's Funeral" Bonus 2's
Radian "Skyskryp12" Go Go Machine Orchestra "Atom" (feat. Minyeh Hsien) D'Virgilio Morse and Jennings "The Weary One" Edenya "Another Place" De Staat "Burning the Flag" Host "Tomorrow's Sky" Uriah Heep "Hail the Sunrise" Zaho de Sagazan "Ne te regarde pas" Here is the playlist for the nominations: Note: I reordered cause it was easier for me to follow in order of suggester without risking mistakes. Knowing me, there may still be errors. |

By the way, I left three open spots at the bottom in case any member who has not contributed wants to add a track to the bonuses -- and for that there is no expectation that you do any listening. So please consider mentioning a choice which I would add to the poll and to the nominations playlist. And I'll be more than happy to add various ones you like to the suggestions playlist.
Thanks everybody. This has been a very enjoyable listening experience for me. |
