1. all time best ever is Dale Crover!
Many other good ones already mentioned, but I'll add Barriemore Barlow (Jethro Tull) and Tim Alexander (Primus).

that's a ballsy statement ![]() I would go for Keith Moon in 'pop or punk' Carl Palmer in prog (tempted to go for Peart but Palmer did Tarkus!) Bonham (sorry!) in classic heavy rock Nicko McBrain in metal Buddy Rich in jazz of course! none of them are that comparable so can't be a greatest. However Carl Palmer was a mighty force at his best , defining what prog drumming was all about and is still drumming at a good level into his seventies. Such a shame he took a lot of criticism of his style in ELP to heart and changed to a very ordinary out of the box drummer in the 80's when he joined Asia. Honourable mention to the late great Jon Hiseman who rarely gets mentioned in any of these types of discussions but had no peers (accept maybe Billy Cobham ![]() |

When I listen to Rush I think it's Neil Peart but when I listen to ELP I think it's Carl Palmer. Bill Bruford is up there too.

Same. It strongly depends on the musical context. For instance, I wouldn't imagine Side A of Something Anything with drums on it being perfectly in time, performed by a professional drummer. Todd's amateur drumming creates a charm that can't be matched. B) EDIT: not to get offtopic, I'm recently impressed by Felix Lehrmann's drumming skills. Definitely one of the greatest drummers ever in terms of technique and ability to fit different musical scenarios.

Check my post from one page back - he's definitely in there! As long as I'm here, I'd also like to mention FM's Martin Deller!

It's not that controversial. I know many are fueled by their veneration for LZ, but Cozy was a much better, tighter drummer. He played with Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker, E&L, Black Sabbath, and led his own bands. Another great versatile drummer is Carmine Appice. He's a founding member of Vanilla Fudge and Cactus. He's played with Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, Ozzy, and many others. But my favorite Carmine project was John Sykes' excellent trio Blue Murder.
I love Carl and there are loads of fine prog drummers, from Collins to Ehart, so it's a hard call. But most of them are better timekeepers than Carl, with Terry Bozzio and Marco Minnemann near the top. For metal, Nicko's good and has a lot of stamina, but I think Scott Rockenfield, Charlie Benante, Vinny Appice (Carmine's brother), and the late Nick Menza are all better.
IMO, the late great Tony Williams, along with Billy Cobham and Dennis Chambers , are easily among the greatest to pick up the sticks. That Virgil Donati guy from down under is pretty intense, too.

If I can just nominate one as the GOAT it's got to be Bruford even though that's something of a boring choice. But still... Also up there (and maybe not so far up other people's lists) are Jaki Liebezeit and Pierre Moerlen.

Bruford may be [one of] the finest drummer, but he is quite far from the greatest. |

I don't think he's been mentioned yet, but I'll be a fanboy and mention Guy Evans. Reviewers listening to Van der Graaf Generator often give high praise to Guy Evans for his drumming. |

As we're in the General Music area I should mention Tony Allen.
