 Gala Drop A driving sound composed of a blend of tribal rhythms - maybe with Latin American influences - rock music and synths. I totally agree with Sam, this is a perfect soundtrack for a road trip on a summer's day! Criatura Their sound is quite complex and unique and requires more attention. I perceive this music as a fusion of jazz/rock combined with strong influences of world music (a vague term but I can't think of a better one atm). It is music whose origin I cannot assign properly. I assume it is Portuguese traditional music, but it must be from an area whose music culture I am not familiar with. Interesting, I’m curious to find out more about this band!
Santana This track proves once again that instrumental music usually ages well. Early Santana is timeless and conveys a certain attitude to life! On my way to a festival I often listen to Santana to boost myself in the right mood. Also, it is a pleasure to watch this video, that’s what videos are made for, after all. The Mermen I
love this psych/surf rock track, it fits perfectly with Santana. I think I need

ambient music became quite popular and commercially successful back in the
1980s. The first Grammy award in this category was presented to Vollenweider in
1987. With his harp he creates beautiful soundscapes and has definitely a high recognition

Bicycle Club Nice to see them still going strong! Their melodic indie/folk rock
style is timeless and creates a beautiful laidback summery atmosphere, here accompanied

Cristi suggests a track by one of his favourite Romanian rock bands, here performing a
summer themed song in a rather gentle melodic style. I am always pleased when he brings
a band from his home country, and I really like Phoenix. Simple Minds Now this is a surprise, the S.M released a new album? ! I completely lost sight of them. Thanks for doing this, Mila, and for the comments. By the way, regarding Magma's Nono, I associate it with summer because it was during summer that I was playing it a lot in Mexico by the pool, but now that I think about it, that actually was in Spring. It sure felt like summer in the Yucatan, however, so still a summer song to me. I find the album humorous and the song quite delightful, but can understand someone else being annoyed by it and not getting that enjoyment of the absurd that I do from it. A song that comes before it on the album has belching in it -- my young children loved The Belching Song as we called it. Not everyone likes burping in their music of course, sometimes one hears it unintentionally in concert (heard that more than once with bar bands) and I tend to prefer it in moderation.
Here are my top five in order of poll/ playlist appearance. After a few listens (with the exception of À la terrasse d'un café, which will have to a lost summer song to me) and deliberations in my head as I put self-imposed limit of 5 votes, I voted for these five. Magma - Nono: This was a fun one. Gala Drop - Sun Gun: A shimmering road trip along the coast. Boards of Canada - Aquarius: "orange" and samples of kids voice put me beside the pool Simple Minds - Summer: Had no idea they were still around. A summer surprise. Criatura - A Festa do Medo do Gaiteiro: very festive with great rhythms and brass. Honorable mentions to Hermanos Gutiérrez ft. Dan Auerbach, Phoenix, Arling & Cameron, and Les Irrésistibles. |

As I was writing up my votes and trying to make I understood my use of the word "shimmering," I encountered this track, which was released just a couple of weeks ago, a lounge-'surf instrumental that would have fit in with this playlist.

These vibed most summer thingies with me, today: - Gala Drop - Sun Gun; nice and groovy - Phoenix - Vara; a nice psychy latin trip - Les Irrésistibles - My Year Is a Day; nice orchestral pop and because it's my year - Rita Payés - Nunca vas a comprender; on a terrace on a square, people playing pétanque, this band playing and me sipping my wine... - Bombay Bicycle Club ft. Holly Humberstone - Diving; of flowers and bees and a fresh dive in not too cold water - Toy Dolls - Livin' La Vida Loca; because there should be more madness in our lives... I was a little torn between old familiar artists that I myself like to listen to during the warm season and artists who are new to me. In the end I decided to give my votes to the following artists/tracks (in no particular order):
Pierre-Olivier Berthet: A singer-songwriter I didn't know before and who so poetically describes the atmosphere at a French café on a summer's day. I love everything about France! Boards of Canada: A track that literally lets me feel the cool water on a hot summer's day. The Mermen: Some great psych/surf rock, the perfect sound on my way to a summer festival. Criatura: A unique blend of traditional and contemporary music. I listened to the entire album and many of their other tracks sound quite Portuguese to my ears. So this one would be the perfect soundtrack for my next trip to Portugal! Andreas Vollenweider: A beautiful dreamy soundscape. I can see myself lying in the grass under a shady tree. And of course I won't leave my compatriot without my vote! Simple Minds: A cool new track! I had no idea that these guys were still around. And my last vote goes to Las Ketchup. What would a summer be without dancing and fun?! Another great IA-playlist I enjoyed very much! The accompanying stories behind your music selections made this edition really special for me. Thanks to all of you, guys and enjoy the summer days to come!

This is a proper summer list, so much relaxing and joyful music there. Voting is hard as always. Some stuff that is great is already known (Magma, Santana, Boards of Canada). The thing that appealed to me most at first listening was Criatura. After that there are lots of things I could vote for. I think I leave it at Mermen, Hermanos Gutierrez, Arling & Cameron, and Rita Payes. Time is limited so I won't be able to go through the full list for a second time, and some things that would deserve more listens don't get them, but that's just how it is. A good summer to all of you!
