Hi everybody and welcome to another poll of our Interactive Playlist series!
This time around, it is going to be about sharing our music we
like to listen to during the warm season. There are all kinds
of moods and styles of music that people associate with summer and therfore we're going
to put them all together into one playlist that you can listen to right now but also save it for later. and listen to it again whenever you feel like it.
Here are the guidelilnes:
Choose
a track that reminds you in one way or another of summer, maybe a good track from a lesser-known
album that you would like to recommend, maybe you bought that album just because of that track or you heard it by chance on the radio or at a pub, what ever.
You
can suggest as many tracks as you like but only one track per post.- Please write separately, next to your YouTube
video the artist’s name and song title. Due to location restrictions your video may
not be available abroad.
You
are welcome to choose any music genreyou like but it would be preferable to
have a musically diverse mix.
Please
avoid too long tracks, max duration:+/- 7 min.
You
can votefor as many songs as you like, excluding your own.
Optionally,
you can say something about why you made your selection and comment on the
songs suggested by other participants.
The voting will begin as soo as all spots in the poll are taken, otherwise when no more suggestions have been posted for a while, 2-3 days or so.
So join us & have fun!

And here is the playlist:
Note: The playlist will be updated regularely.
It will appear at the end of this opening post only.

Here is a first one from me:
Hermanos
Gutiérrez ft. Dan Auerbach: Tres Hermanos (Album: El Bueno y el Malo, 2022)
It is this easy listening type of music. I like to listen to this album right now while driving. It gives me that road trip feeling.
Hermanos
Gutiérrez are an instrumental duo formed in 2015 in Zürich by Ecuadorian-Swiss
brothers Alejandro Gutiérrez (guitar and lap steel) and Estevan Gutiérrez
(guitar and percussion). Their latest album, “El Bueno y el Malo”, inspired by
Morricone’s “Spaghetti-Western” soundtracks, was recorded in Nashville in
collaboration with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and released by his label in 2022.

Aahh, that's why it is this hot! It's that time of the year. Nice.
The second thing I thought of (I will present the first thing later) was a summer hit the year I moved to France and it actually made me think that I should move more South (which I eventually did, although not that far). Now, since this video has the karaoke subtitles included, if we could all get together to do a karaoke with this song, including its wonderful choreography, it would be the only occasion you would see me dance!
It is a shameless pop song, but it is catchy, well made, and catchy, and it is also catchy, so it is actually quite good, and catchy...

Very nice idea for a poll.
While Magma is a well-known band in this PA neck of the beach, Attahk is not one of the best known albums (still has over 400 ratings at PA and I am confident that I will not be the only here who responds who KnowKnows it). You don't have to include this, but this song is the summer song for me. I went on a trip my young kids and wife to an all-inclusive resort in the Yucatan (really superb). I went to Mexico for places like Chichen Itza, swimming in ceynotes, the beaches and islands, but in the end it was the drinking cocktails and eating delicious food at the resort that was the highlight. While at the pool, I decided to put on Magma's Attahk with earbuds, partially because I got so tired off one person who was playing out loud that "I got a feeling that tonight's gonna be a good night" song again and again. For some reason "Nono" really became my summer song with good vibratioons there. This is my ultimate happy song that I associate with summer and for that reason I feel that I would be remiss to not mention it.

Such an ifectious song should not be missed at any beach party! The only rival I can think of is Los Del Rio's Macarena but The Ketchup song is clearly my favourite, la la la . .

Glad to have you on board with us, Greg! Of course I will include your track. The main thing is we have fun here and the stories behind our choices, that's what makes the music so special.- Two years ago, I booked a cruise to the Caribbean, including Cuba, Jamaica, Yucatan and Mexico City but the trip was cancelled due to the pandemic. I hope I can catch up with that trip as soon as work allows me.

This album was highly recommended by a friend. I bought the CD and it has been in my car for the last two summers. It's not easy to pick a single track, this one is not the most memorable but sounds better on its own.

There is probably no better recommendation than this! You just reminded me of another instrumental Portuguese band I used to listen to a few years ago. It's Dead Combo. Have you ever introduced them here before? I think they are pretty cool. - It's nice to see you around after quite a while. Welcome back!

I wanted to participate on the last one but couldn't think of anything interesting to nominate. I've been playing music way more than listening lately.
I haven't, I heard some Dead Combo but it never grabbed me. More recently there's Expresso Transatlântico with a similar vibe but focused on Portuguese guitar. I'm not a fan of the production but they're pretty good live.

That sounds like what would have been an excellent trip.
I had four tracks that came to mind very quickly, and while I had some concern with the Magma, I also do with another act's music that I want to nominate. I have been very into Boards of Canada for the last few years especially. I nominated Boards of Canada track, Dayvan Cowboy, off The Campfire Headphase (2005) in 2021, and in your last one, Mila, Interactive Poll: It Takes Two! from a few months, I nominated The Beach at Redpoint off Geogaddi (2002) and now I want to nominate a track off my favourite Boards of Canada album, which also has been, I think my number one summer song from what may be my number one summer album particularly over the last two years (the year before that it would have been something Serge Gainsbourg, and while Nono was the first to come to mind and always put a smile on face, Boards of Canada has got more play than Magma these last two years). This and Magma's Nono are I think my ultimate summer tracks. I did wonder, should I go for something that I also associate with summer that is not as important to me or vice versa? The heart won, yeah, that's right.
Boards of Canada - Aquarius (off music has the right to children 1998, and it's Scottish in case some would assume otherwise).

I had a chance to listen to the three tracks... My impressions
Hermanos Gutiérrez ft. Dan Auerbach: Tres Hermanos: I have heard some Hermanos Gutiérrez before, not that, and like his music. Watching that live performance takes me back to going to one of my old favourite restaurants in Vancouver, which has live music, called The Latin Quarter.
Las Ketchup - Aserejé (The Ketchup Song). Maybe I would like more salsa and less ketchup. Okay, that sounds pretty ignorant. More Flamenco brand mustard and Spanish mayonnaise. It is catchy.
Gala Drop - Sun Gun. I like this a lot.

For me. Early Santana is summer. One of my favorite clips is from Woodstock in August of 1969. Iconic performance.
Santana - Soul Sacrifice
On the 'Ketchup Song', I had not heard before. It's catchy, but not really sticking with me. It doesn't quite have a hook like the Macarena, Gangnam Style, or others that occupy that space in music.

Thanks for the recommendation, Sam! I checked out Expresso Transatlântico, and I think that their combination of rock and Portuguese guitar works perfektly well. Another one from me, a genre that should not be missing here imo. :)
Chronixx ft. Chronicle: Big Bad Sound (off his debut album "Chronology", 2017)
Some
time ago, I stopped by one of our remaining record stores and they happened to
play some reggae music at the time.
I
hadn’t listened to reggae in ages, and I had also lost sight of the genre tbh. They
played a track by Chronixx that immediately caught my attention. It wasn’t that
old familiar reggae groove, this sounded kinda different and very fresh and current.
Chronixx
belongs to the new reggae generation and is one of the main exponents of the
so-called 'roots reggae revival movement', which means that these guys go back to the origins of reggae music, but above all the values of Rastafarian philosophy, and interpret the music in a new
way. There are different styles, however.
So
here is Chronixx, singing a duet with his dad. It is, so to speak, the embodiment
of what roots reggae revival is all about. Oh, and have I already mentioned, what a "maad sick riddim" this is, this track immediately makes you wanna dance! How about you, Kees??

Imagine, you're strolling along a white sandy beach... blue water, sunset... and a bit further away you hear this soothing music calling you. So you go to that small cosy tropical bar, get yourself a drink and relax in one of those deck chairs. James Bond passes by, but you don't care: you have your cocktail.

I've suggested the Mermen in a previous poll, but what is summer on PA without some progressive-ish surf music. Summer driving music IMO.
The Mermen - Miki's Lush Beehive

^ That Mermen one is great choice. ^^ I like that Phoenix. ^^^ Today I'm going to a party at a neighbour's house (was Nickelback's drummers house before). They have a heated Koi pond and river that surrounds a Tiki bar. Zona Sul would be perfect music to play at their outdoor, garden bar. ^^^^ I enjoyed Chronixx, reggae I do commonly associate with summer. ^^^^^ As for Soul Sacrifice, I love this Santana track and the Woodstock performance. It's nostalgic for me as I have memories of listening to this.
Already my third, and this is another that came to mind almost immediately when I saw this poll. Of course you don't have to include all of mine, and it's great to have a variety of people.
Les Irrésistibles - My Year Is a Day (1968)
Les Irrésistibles were a 60s to early 70s band of young American males living in France. Wikipedia and Facebook calls them a boy band. They formed as The Sentrys in 1968 and were classmates at the American School of Paris. They gained some notoriety playing covers songs. "MY Year is a Day" was written by William Sheller, whose Lux Aeterna is one of my favourite albums. I really got into this song because it is a bonus track on the CD release I have of Lux Aeterna (great bonus tracks on that). About six or seven summers back, my wife and I took our two kids on a camping trip to Orcas Island, which is one of the San Juan Islands in Washington State. We stayed in Moran State Park. This was my favourite camping trip we have done. It's beautiful there and unlike BC where it so hard to reserve anywhere unless you get in really early, this excellent campsite was easy to get into. Washington is better than BC for such things, commonly less expensive and better facilities generally, and the towns are prettier. Anyway, there is a nice small town on the island with some nice restaurants (best root beer I ever had). And the library lent me a book without me needing a library card or even to be a resident (me not even American) -- all very civilised. And the people in Washington I found to be super friendly and helpful.
On the drive down, I played William Sheller's Lux Aeterna CD including the bonus track "My Year Is a Day". When we arrived at Orcas Island, we went to the grocery store for supplies. To my great surprise, "My Year is a Day" was playing on their stereo. I don't remember hearing it around here. It was a fantastic summer trip and that was a big coincidence, so this is one song that sprung to my mind when I saw this poll that I think of when I think summer.

Andreas Vollenweider - Behind the gardens, behind the wall, under the tree.

Such a wonderful summer music... I still love it.

^ Unfortunately it is not the same version; it sounds more like a demo version with a rather disappointing mix. The original (album?) version is 5:03 in length, has a longer instrumental introduction (with bar and street noises mixed in) and a longer instrumental outro where the electric guitar is more soaring and way more up front in the mix, which makes it a bit more rock in the last part of the song. But I cannot find another version on youtube...

I heard that one on the radio. I never thought much of Conan Osiris but with a proper instrumental he's actually good.
I like how Gala Drop uses both rock and dub to create depth and contrast, everything is not drowned in reverb all the time.

A beautiful line-up that captures very different moods! I wasn't around last weekend, but I will write a few words about the suggested songs soon.
Meanwhile, I would like to suggest another song. In case more people want to join us I can easily remove it from the playlist.
Rita Payés - Nunca vas a comprender (off the album: Como la piel, 2021)
I would like to introduce to you this young and talented Spanish jazz musician. I enjoy to listen to this light kind of music paired with her beautiful soulful voice. The music fits perfectly with the mood on a cozy summer afternoon or evening imo. I can really recommend the entire album which she recorded together with her mother, Elisabeth Roma.

Here's something that I discovered just now... or rather, the band is one of my three favourite English bands that I discovered via BBC's Glastonbury coverage when I lived in London about ten years ago. That was in the summer, of course, and they have a very summery style.
I'll give their brand new video (posted 20 July, summer again) a shot here rather than some favourite songs of them from ten years ago as you like to find out about new stuff, don't you? And I think that this is well up with their best material (first impression of course).

I sometimes have sleep issues and rather than do anything productive, I look up trivial information. In this case, The Ketchup Song. While a massive hit around the world, it had reached only to number 54 in the U.S.
While I didn't find the song catchy on first listen, reading about the story in the song helped.
"The Ketchup Song" is about a young man named Diego who enters a nightclub. The DJ, a friend of Diego's, plays Diego's favorite song, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang, and Diego dances and sings along to the song, imitating its chorus with Spanish gibberish.
"Aserejé" is, therefore, a meaningless word, with the chorus "Aserejé, ja, de je, de jebe tu de jebere ..." being a somewhat incorrect imitation of the Rapper's Delight's "I said a hip-hop, the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop ..."
Now I get that connection, since Rapper's Delight goes way back into my youth.
As interesting were the rumors that the song is Satanic.
Although the band has explained that "aserejé" is a meaningless word derived from "Rapper's Delight", rumors and conspiracy theories spread through e-mail, especially in Latin America, that the gibberish lyrics included hidden demonic references that would lead the listener to Satanism and heresy.
The phrases from the Spanish lyrics which were claimed to be references to Satanism include:
"Aserejé", which can be broken down into the Spanish phrase "a ser hereje", meaning "let's be heretical".
"Ja, de je, de jebe tu de jebere" – "Ja" would here be the beginning of the Tetragrammaton referring to Jehova (God). The phrase would therefore be "Jehova, deja tu ser" ("Jehova (God), let go of your being").
"Y donde más no cabe un alma" ("where there isn't room for a soul"), supposedly referring to hell.
"Y el DJ que lo conoce toca el himno de las 12" ("the DJ who knows him plays the midnight anthem"), supposedly referring to Satanic rituals which occur at midnight.

In 1999, the massive summer hit song was Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca". It's mix of Latin rhythms and surf guitar make it a fit with my previous suggestions from Santana and the Mermen.
Earlier this year, I went to a burlesque show and one of the performers did highly energetic routine to that song, but not to the original. She danced to a cover version and it was not the surprisingly good one by Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas from the movie Shrek 2.
No, she danced and shook her tassels to the cover version by the Toy Dolls and handed out kazoos to the audience. I unfortunately was not close enough to get such a memento.
So, get out your kazoos for the Toy Dolls cover version of Livin' La Vida Loca.

Really? I think it is not advisable to think too much about the sense and nonsense of the lyrics of these pop songs. I just wonder what kind of people come up with such texts . .

Certainly the German people who find raising taxes satanic would be with you there... when Gerhard Schroeder was re-elected chancellor in 2002, somebody made a parody of him on the Ketchup song where he lists all ways how he will raise taxes.
You may not want to listen to this but I post it anyway. For friends of the German language, it is at least masterfully rhymed. Whenever the Ketchup song is played I cannot think of anything else than Schroeder and his taxes. (In fact I wasn't much concerned about his taxes back then, far more about how he kept his Putin friendship even after Feb 2022, but that's another matter. Satanic anyway!)
NB: This is not a proposal for the poll (in case anyone had doubts about that).

Las Ketchup Kees surprises us with a Latin party banger and encourages us to dance and sing along! The song is actually better than I remembered it. It features a mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation which is rather rare with songs of this type. And hey, it is simply infectious!
Arling & Cameron Here
we have a Dutch duo doing some nice easy listening/lounge type of music blended
with a flavour of 60s retro style sound which is ideal for an elegant bar on a warm
summer’s day or evening. Here is your cocktail, Kees!
Pierre-Olivier BerthetA
French singer-songwriter I didn’t know before. This pop rock song is
particularly characterised by very nice poetic lyrics in which Berthet skilfully
describes the atmosphere at a French street café. Very nice!
Boards of Canada With
“Aquarius” we dive into the depths of the deep blue sea. Boards of Canada confirm
once again that they are rightly counted among the masters of IDM and
electronic, ambient music.
Les
IrrésistiblesA
very nice song in a 60s chamber pop rock style. There is a French version by
Dalida that appears in a recent James Bond movie. I read that the band was based in France in the late 60s. It would be interesting
to know who actually wrote that song? But anyway, l love this nostalgic tune, truely touching!
Magma Although this band is obviously well-known, I am not familiar with their music. I think this piece is quite interesting, but I can’t relate to it really. I mean, mood-wise it doesn’t sound summery to my ears. I find their style of singing a little hard to get used to tbh, but maybe that's intentional. I don't get what the song is actuallyabout?

I sometimes have sleep issues and rather than do anything productive, I look up trivial information. In this case, The Ketchup Song. While a massive hit around the world, it had reached only to number 54 in the U.S.
While I didn't find the song catchy on first listen, reading about the story in the song helped.
Really? I think it is not advisable to think too much about the sense and nonsense of the lyrics of these pop songs. I just wonder what kind of people come up with such texts . .
The story has no meaning nor did I care to make sense, but the connection to Rapper's Delight is what made it more memorable. The "hip hop, hippity hop..." from that song is ingrained from my younger days, so I end up juxtaposing the two songs in my head, making the Ketchup Song more memorable. If I had not read about that, I would not have connected the two songs on my own, though now, it seems obvious.

I will comment on your songs soon by the way.

Gala Drop A
driving sound composed of a blend of tribal rhythms - maybe with Latin American influences - rock music and synths. I totally
agree with Sam, this is a perfect soundtrack for a road trip on a summer's day!
Criatura Their sound is quite complex and unique and requires more attention. I perceive this music as a fusion of jazz/rock combined with strong influences of world music (a vague term but I can't think of a better one atm). It is music whose
origin I cannot assign properly. I assume it is Portuguese traditional music,
but it must be from an area whose music culture I am not familiar with. Interesting, I’m curious to find out more about this band!
Santana This
track proves once again that instrumental music usually ages well. Early Santana is
timeless and conveys a certain attitude to life! On my way to a festival I often
listen to Santana to boost myself in the right mood. Also, it is a pleasure to watch
this video, that’s what videos are made for, after all.
The Mermen I
love this psych/surf rock track, it fits perfectly with Santana. I think I need
to buy this album!
Toy Dolls Another genre I like. These guys are fun! Punk paired with a good sense of humour is
quite special and unique.

Andreas
Vollenweider What a surprise, our Swiss Grammy Award winner! Yes, new age and
ambient music became quite popular and commercially successful back in the
1980s. The first Grammy award in this category was presented to Vollenweider in
1987. With his harp he creates beautiful soundscapes and has definitely a high recognition
value through his instrument.
Bombay
Bicycle Club Nice to see them still going strong! Their melodic indie/folk rock
style is timeless and creates a beautiful laidback summery atmosphere, here accompanied
by a very nice music video.
Phoenix
Cristi suggests a track by one of his favourite Romanian rock bands, here performing a
summer themed song in a rather gentle melodic style. I am always pleased when he brings
a band from his home country, and I really like Phoenix.
Simple
Minds Now this is a surprise, the S.M released a new album? ! I completely lost sight
of them. This is a pretty cool track, though and doesn't sound outdated at all. Keep going, guys!

So guys, let's start voting!
I don't think anyone else will join us, and there is no need to. We already have a great and diverse line-up imo. You will find the playlist at the end of the OP on page 1 of this thread. So, enjoy the music and vote for as many songs as you like, exc. your own of course.

Thanks for doing this, Mila, and for the comments. By the way, regarding Magma's Nono, I associate it with summer because it was during summer that I was playing it a lot in Mexico by the pool, but now that I think about it, that actually was in Spring. It sure felt like summer in the Yucatan, however, so still a summer song to me. I find the album humorous and the song quite delightful, but can understand someone else being annoyed by it and not getting that enjoyment of the absurd that I do from it. A song that comes before it on the album has belching in it -- my young children loved The Belching Song as we called it. Not everyone likes burping in their music of course, sometimes one hears it unintentionally in concert (heard that more than once with bar bands) and I tend to prefer it in moderation.
Here are my top five in order of poll/ playlist appearance. The Santana piece I was most into as a teenager and in my early 20s (loved Santana then and the Woodstock album)
Gala Drop - Sun Gun Santana - Soul Sacrifice Arling & Cameron - Zona Sul The Mermen - Miki's Lush Beehive Criatura - A Festa do Medo do Gaiteiro
Thanks all for another wonderful round of music.

Thanks Mila for setting up this pill, and to all the contributors. A very summery playlist indeed capturing various shades from shimmering to sunny to festive. Brought to you by the letter S.
After a few listens (with the exception of À la terrasse d'un café, which will have to a lost summer song to me) and deliberations in my head as I put self-imposed limit of 5 votes, I voted for these five.
Magma - Nono: This was a fun one.
Gala Drop - Sun Gun: A shimmering road trip along the coast.
Boards of Canada - Aquarius: "orange" and samples of kids voice put me beside the pool
Simple Minds - Summer: Had no idea they were still around. A summer surprise.
Criatura - A Festa do Medo do Gaiteiro: very festive with great rhythms and brass.
Honorable mentions to Hermanos Gutiérrez ft. Dan Auerbach, Phoenix, Arling & Cameron, and Les Irrésistibles.

As I was writing up my votes and trying to make I understood my use of the word "shimmering," I encountered this track, which was released just a couple of weeks ago, a lounge-'surf instrumental that would have fit in with this playlist.

Yeah, cool.
A nice playlist and I "shimmer" along. These vibed most summer thingies with me, today:
- Gala Drop - Sun Gun; nice and groovy
- Phoenix - Vara; a nice psychy latin trip
- Les Irrésistibles - My Year Is a Day; nice orchestral pop and because it's my year
- Rita Payés - Nunca vas a comprender; on a terrace on a square, people playing pétanque, this band playing and me sipping my wine...
- Bombay Bicycle Club ft. Holly Humberstone - Diving; of flowers and bees and a fresh dive in not too cold water
- Toy Dolls - Livin' La Vida Loca; because there should be more madness in our lives...
Honorable mention to all the others (yes, it's summer, I'm lazy...)
And to spice up the summer shimmer, a proggy one with Marillion - Cannibal Surf Babe:

It has mostly latin influences, maybe the bagpipes and the mid-section have some northern Portuguese folk vibes (the region with Celtic traditions).
I voted for Boards of Canada, Andreas Vollenweider and Rita Payés, but overall the playlist was pretty cool

I was a little torn between old familiar artists that I myself like to listen to during the warm season and artists who are new to me. In the end I decided to give my votes to the following artists/tracks (in no particular order):
Pierre-Olivier Berthet: A singer-songwriter I didn't know before and who so poetically describes the atmosphere at a French café on a summer's day. I love everything about France!
Boards of Canada: A track that literally lets me feel the cool water on a hot summer's day.
The Mermen: Some great psych/surf rock, the perfect sound on my way to a summer festival.
Criatura: A unique blend of traditional and contemporary music. I listened to the entire album and many of their other tracks sound quite Portuguese to my ears. So this one would be the perfect soundtrack for my next trip to Portugal!
Andreas Vollenweider: A beautiful dreamy soundscape. I can see myself lying in the grass under a shady tree. And of course I won't leave my compatriot without my vote!
Simple Minds: A cool new track! I had no idea that these guys were still around.
And my last vote goes to Las Ketchup. What would a summer be without dancing and fun?!
Another great IA-playlist I enjoyed very much! The accompanying stories behind your music selections made this edition really special for me. Thanks to all of you, guys and enjoy the summer days to come!

This is a proper summer list, so much relaxing and joyful music there. Voting is hard as always. Some stuff that is great is already known (Magma, Santana, Boards of Canada). The thing that appealed to me most at first listening was Criatura. After that there are lots of things I could vote for. I think I leave it at Mermen, Hermanos Gutierrez, Arling & Cameron, and Rita Payes. Time is limited so I won't be able to go through the full list for a second time, and some things that would deserve more listens don't get them, but that's just how it is. A good summer to all of you!

The voting is over but I have added your song as a bonus track to the playlist. So if you like you can listen to it at some point. :)
@ George and Kees
I included The Westwatcher and Marillion in the playlist as well.
