Thank you, I love Osibisa and this song in particular, it brings back memories! The voting is over but I have added your song as a bonus track to the playlist. So if you like you can listen to it at some point. :) @ George and Kees I included The Westwatcher and Marillion in the playlist as well. Edited by Mila-13 - August 05 2023 at 06:05 |

This is a proper summer list, so much relaxing and joyful music there. Voting is hard as always. Some stuff that is great is already known (Magma, Santana, Boards of Canada). The thing that appealed to me most at first listening was Criatura. After that there are lots of things I could vote for. I think I leave it at Mermen, Hermanos Gutierrez, Arling & Cameron, and Rita Payes. Time is limited so I won't be able to go through the full list for a second time, and some things that would deserve more listens don't get them, but that's just how it is. A good summer to all of you!

I was a little torn between old familiar artists that I myself like to listen to during the warm season and artists who are new to me. In the end I decided to give my votes to the following artists/tracks (in no particular order):
Pierre-Olivier Berthet: A singer-songwriter I didn't know before and who so poetically describes the atmosphere at a French café on a summer's day. I love everything about France! Boards of Canada: A track that literally lets me feel the cool water on a hot summer's day. The Mermen: Some great psych/surf rock, the perfect sound on my way to a summer festival. Criatura: A unique blend of traditional and contemporary music. I listened to the entire album and many of their other tracks sound quite Portuguese to my ears. So this one would be the perfect soundtrack for my next trip to Portugal! Andreas Vollenweider: A beautiful dreamy soundscape. I can see myself lying in the grass under a shady tree. And of course I won't leave my compatriot without my vote! Simple Minds: A cool new track! I had no idea that these guys were still around. And my last vote goes to Las Ketchup. What would a summer be without dancing and fun?! Another great IA-playlist I enjoyed very much! The accompanying stories behind your music selections made this edition really special for me. Thanks to all of you, guys and enjoy the summer days to come!

Yeah, cool. A nice playlist and I "shimmer" along. These vibed most summer thingies with me, today: - Gala Drop - Sun Gun; nice and groovy - Phoenix - Vara; a nice psychy latin trip - Les Irrésistibles - My Year Is a Day; nice orchestral pop and because it's my year - Rita Payés - Nunca vas a comprender; on a terrace on a square, people playing pétanque, this band playing and me sipping my wine... - Bombay Bicycle Club ft. Holly Humberstone - Diving; of flowers and bees and a fresh dive in not too cold water - Toy Dolls - Livin' La Vida Loca; because there should be more madness in our lives... Honorable mention to all the others (yes, it's summer, I'm lazy...) And to spice up the summer shimmer, a proggy one with Marillion - Cannibal Surf Babe: |

As I was writing up my votes and trying to make I understood my use of the word "shimmering," I encountered this track, which was released just a couple of weeks ago, a lounge-'surf instrumental that would have fit in with this playlist.

Thanks Mila for setting up this pill, and to all the contributors. A very summery playlist indeed capturing various shades from shimmering to sunny to festive. Brought to you by the letter S.
After a few listens (with the exception of À la terrasse d'un café, which will have to a lost summer song to me) and deliberations in my head as I put self-imposed limit of 5 votes, I voted for these five. Magma - Nono: This was a fun one. Gala Drop - Sun Gun: A shimmering road trip along the coast. Boards of Canada - Aquarius: "orange" and samples of kids voice put me beside the pool Simple Minds - Summer: Had no idea they were still around. A summer surprise. Criatura - A Festa do Medo do Gaiteiro: very festive with great rhythms and brass. Honorable mentions to Hermanos Gutiérrez ft. Dan Auerbach, Phoenix, Arling & Cameron, and Les Irrésistibles. |

Thanks for doing this, Mila, and for the comments. By the way, regarding Magma's Nono, I associate it with summer because it was during summer that I was playing it a lot in Mexico by the pool, but now that I think about it, that actually was in Spring. It sure felt like summer in the Yucatan, however, so still a summer song to me. I find the album humorous and the song quite delightful, but can understand someone else being annoyed by it and not getting that enjoyment of the absurd that I do from it. A song that comes before it on the album has belching in it -- my young children loved The Belching Song as we called it. Not everyone likes burping in their music of course, sometimes one hears it unintentionally in concert (heard that more than once with bar bands) and I tend to prefer it in moderation.
Here are my top five in order of poll/ playlist appearance. The Santana piece I was most into as a teenager and in my early 20s (loved Santana then and the Woodstock album) Gala Drop - Sun Gun Santana - Soul Sacrifice Arling & Cameron - Zona Sul The Mermen - Miki's Lush Beehive Criatura - A Festa do Medo do Gaiteiro Thanks all for another wonderful round of music. Andreas
Vollenweider What a surprise, our Swiss Grammy Award winner! Yes, new age and
ambient music became quite popular and commercially successful back in the
1980s. The first Grammy award in this category was presented to Vollenweider in
1987. With his harp he creates beautiful soundscapes and has definitely a high recognition
value through his instrument. Bombay
Bicycle Club Nice to see them still going strong! Their melodic indie/folk rock
style is timeless and creates a beautiful laidback summery atmosphere, here accompanied
by a very nice music video. Phoenix
Cristi suggests a track by one of his favourite Romanian rock bands, here performing a
summer themed song in a rather gentle melodic style. I am always pleased when he brings
a band from his home country, and I really like Phoenix. Simple Minds Now this is a surprise, the S.M released a new album? ! I completely lost sight of them. This is a pretty cool track, though and doesn't sound outdated at all. Keep going, guys! (3/3) __________________________________________ TO ALL So guys, let's start voting! I don't think anyone else will join us, and there is no need to. We already have a great and diverse line-up imo. You will find the playlist at the end of the OP on page 1 of this thread. So, enjoy the music and vote for as many songs as you like, exc. your own of course. Edited by Mila-13 - July 30 2023 at 00:21 |

Gala Drop A driving sound composed of a blend of tribal rhythms - maybe with Latin American influences - rock music and synths. I totally agree with Sam, this is a perfect soundtrack for a road trip on a summer's day! Criatura Their sound is quite complex and unique and requires more attention. I perceive this music as a fusion of jazz/rock combined with strong influences of world music (a vague term but I can't think of a better one atm). It is music whose origin I cannot assign properly. I assume it is Portuguese traditional music, but it must be from an area whose music culture I am not familiar with. Interesting, I’m curious to find out more about this band! Santana This track proves once again that instrumental music usually ages well. Early Santana is timeless and conveys a certain attitude to life! On my way to a festival I often listen to Santana to boost myself in the right mood. Also, it is a pleasure to watch this video, that’s what videos are made for, after all. The Mermen I
love this psych/surf rock track, it fits perfectly with Santana. I think I need
to buy this album! Toy Dolls Another genre I like. These guys are fun! Punk paired with a good sense of humour is quite special and unique. To be continued (2/3) Edited by Mila-13 - July 30 2023 at 00:54 |

The story has no meaning nor did I care to make sense, but the connection to Rapper's Delight is what made it more memorable. The "hip hop, hippity hop..." from that song is ingrained from my younger days, so I end up juxtaposing the two songs in my head, making the Ketchup Song more memorable. If I had not read about that, I would not have connected the two songs on my own, though now, it seems obvious. Edited by mathman0806 - July 27 2023 at 15:28 |

Las Ketchup Kees surprises us with a Latin party banger and encourages us to dance and sing along! The song is actually better than I remembered it. It features a mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation which is rather rare with songs of this type. And hey, it is simply infectious! Arling & Cameron Here
we have a Dutch duo doing some nice easy listening/lounge type of music blended
with a flavour of 60s retro style sound which is ideal for an elegant bar on a warm
summer’s day or evening. Here is your cocktail, Kees! Pierre-Olivier Berthet A French singer-songwriter I didn’t know before. This pop rock song is particularly characterised by very nice poetic lyrics in which Berthet skilfully describes the atmosphere at a French street café. Very nice! Boards of Canada With
“Aquarius” we dive into the depths of the deep blue sea. Boards of Canada confirm
once again that they are rightly counted among the masters of IDM and
electronic, ambient music. Les
Irrésistibles A
very nice song in a 60s chamber pop rock style. There is a French version by
Dalida that appears in a recent James Bond movie. I read that the band was based in France in the late 60s. It would be interesting
to know who actually wrote that song? But anyway, l love this nostalgic tune, truely touching! Magma Although this band is obviously well-known, I am not familiar with their music. I think this piece is quite interesting, but I can’t relate to it really. I mean, mood-wise it doesn’t sound summery to my ears. I find their style of singing a little hard to get used to tbh, but maybe that's intentional. I don't get what the song is actually about? To be continued.(1/3)

Certainly the German people who find raising taxes satanic would be with you there... when Gerhard Schroeder was re-elected chancellor in 2002, somebody made a parody of him on the Ketchup song where he lists all ways how he will raise taxes. You may not want to listen to this but I post it anyway. For friends of the German language, it is at least masterfully rhymed. Whenever the Ketchup song is played I cannot think of anything else than Schroeder and his taxes. (In fact I wasn't much concerned about his taxes back then, far more about how he kept his Putin friendship even after Feb 2022, but that's another matter. Satanic anyway!) NB: This is not a proposal for the poll (in case anyone had doubts about that). Edited by Lewian - July 26 2023 at 15:37 |

Really? I think it is not advisable to think too much about the sense and nonsense of the lyrics of these pop songs. I just wonder what kind of people come up with such texts . .

In 1999, the massive summer hit song was Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca". It's mix of Latin rhythms and surf guitar make it a fit with my previous suggestions from Santana and the Mermen.
Earlier this year, I went to a burlesque show and one of the performers did highly energetic routine to that song, but not to the original. She danced to a cover version and it was not the surprisingly good one by Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas from the movie Shrek 2. No, she danced and shook her tassels to the cover version by the Toy Dolls and handed out kazoos to the audience. I unfortunately was not close enough to get such a memento. So, get out your kazoos for the Toy Dolls cover version of Livin' La Vida Loca. |

I sometimes have sleep issues and rather than do anything productive, I look up trivial information. In this case, The Ketchup Song. While a massive hit around the world, it had reached only to number 54 in the U.S.
While I didn't find the song catchy on first listen, reading about the story in the song helped.
Now I get that connection, since Rapper's Delight goes way back into my youth. As interesting were the rumors that the song is Satanic.
