It is possible that SHowe has been more valuable for YES, in that he has the ability to extend things within the music. It's hard to say the same thing for SHackett, though it seems that a lot of the work is actually composed and then played ... whereas it is very likely that at the time of recording, what SHowe did was improvised, and then taken from the can to get it to the concert.

Both have been excellent at making sure they brought all of it together to the stage ... so choosing one or the other ... good gawd ... chocolate or vanilla? Or strawberry! This is music, not food ... and sometimes those thoughts and comparisons are silly. 

They are both great!

Obviously both are among the greats!

I would say that Howe has contributed more strongly to Yes music than Hackett did to Genesis music, although of course the comparison is not fair, Hackett's epoch with Genesis was much much shorter than Howe's with Yes.

On the other hand Hackett has produced better solo output. For some unclear reason (to me at least) Howe while being a key contributor to Yes, did not produce much of a consistent solo work, and while I must admit that I have not listened to all of both solo albums, some solo works by Howe are rather mediocre (his voice did not help when he attempted to sing his own solo pieces).

For what concerns purely their technical proficiency, they have different styles. None of them excels at very fast soloing but both have an extremely personal touch and feel (Howe a bit more IMHO), Howe is great at fingerpicking but overall I think Hackett is a bit technically superior. But technique is not the point for any of them, nowadays we see young guys (or ladies) with amazing technique, but the strong point of guitarists like Howe or Hackett is their inspiration, musicality, and ability to produce a very personal sound and feel.

Hackett described advertised himself in early 70's: 'Imaginative guitarist/writer seeks involvement with receptive musicians determined to strive beyond existing, stagnant music forms.' It's a good description. BTW he didn't invent the tapping technique.

Howe's fiery improvisations are one of a kind...

I like them both.

Hackett is of the most compelling guitarist I have ever heard. I like how he switches between different guitars throughout a song and just how he can make any guitar sound. “Blood on the Rooftops” is one of his greatest accomplishments in Genesis. He was playing at a much higher level before he left and his first solo album is just astounding. His live shows are spectacular. David Gilmour can make your jaw drop when he plays a few chords but Steve Hackett makes your whole face drop and makes you land to the ground headfirst.

Howe is a great composer that blends in and makes his bandmates sound better much like how Wayne Shorter did with a saxophone. This is something I greatly respect and what really makes him different.
I also like how he switches guitars and his soloing which is much less present than most his peers. I feel like he gets overlooked by a lot of people.

Both guitarists have a lot in common with their styles but the sound they produce makes them sound very different. That’s why I pick Hackett. I enjoy listening to Hackett more. The way he sounds and what he puts out is mind blowing. I feel like I would be foolish to even think to rank a majority of great guitarists over Hackett. In fact it terrifies me and I might be embarrassed if I tried.
