At the age of 15 I saw him playing this live in Hamburg's city park together with my first love. Of course it was summer. Aaaah! Memories...

^ Unfortunately it is not the same version; it sounds more like a demo version with a rather disappointing mix. The original (album?) version is 5:03 in length, has a longer instrumental introduction (with bar and street noises mixed in) and a longer instrumental outro where the electric guitar is more soaring and way more up front in the mix, which makes it a bit more rock in the last part of the song. But I cannot find another version on youtube...

Ah, I discovered that track recently on a local radio show, they use the counting part for the intro because it's dedicated to lists and tops.

I heard that one on the radio. I never thought much of Conan Osiris but with a proper instrumental he's actually good.

I play guitars and synths on my own music (I'm on PA btw) and I'm mostly playing mandolin with a folk group lately.

Another song from summer 2022. I saw this band twice at the time, it's not my favourite song on the album but loved the build-up for this one, it was incredibly festive.

A beautiful line-up that captures very different moods! I wasn't around last weekend, but I will write a few words about the suggested songs soon.

I would like to introduce to you this young and talented Spanish jazz musician. I enjoy to listen to this light kind of music paired with her beautiful soulful voice. The music fits perfectly with the mood on a cozy summer afternoon or evening imo. I can really recommend the entire album which she recorded together with her mother, Elisabeth Roma.

Here's something that I discovered just now... or rather, the band is one of my three favourite English bands that I discovered via BBC's Glastonbury coverage when I lived in London about ten years ago. That was in the summer, of course, and they have a very summery style.

I'll give their brand new video (posted 20 July, summer again) a shot here rather than some favourite songs of them from ten years ago as you like to find out about new stuff, don't you? And I think that this is well up with their best material (first impression of course).

I sometimes have sleep issues and rather than do anything productive, I look up trivial information. In this case, The Ketchup Song. While a massive hit around the world, it had reached only to number 54 in the U.S.

While I didn't find the song catchy on first listen, reading about the story in the song helped.

Quote "The Ketchup Song" is about a young man named Diego who enters a nightclub. The DJ, a friend of Diego's, plays Diego's favorite song, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang, and Diego dances and sings along to the song, imitating its chorus with Spanish gibberish.

"Aserejé" is, therefore, a meaningless word, with the chorus "Aserejé, ja, de je, de jebe tu de jebere ..." being a somewhat incorrect imitation of the Rapper's Delight's "I said a hip-hop, the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop ..."


Now I get that connection, since Rapper's Delight goes way back into my youth.

As interesting were the rumors that the song is Satanic.

In 1999, the massive summer hit song was Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca". It's mix of Latin rhythms and surf guitar make it a fit with my previous suggestions from Santana and the Mermen.

Earlier this year, I went to a burlesque show and one of the performers did highly energetic routine to that song, but not to the original. She danced to a cover version and it was not the surprisingly good one by Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas from the movie Shrek 2.

No, she danced and shook her tassels to the cover version by the Toy Dolls and handed out kazoos to the audience. I unfortunately was not close enough to get such a memento.

So, get out your kazoos for the Toy Dolls cover version of Livin' La Vida Loca.

Really? I think it is not advisable to think too much about the sense and nonsense of the lyrics of these pop songs. I just wonder what kind of people come up with such texts . . LOL

Certainly the German people who find raising taxes satanic would be with you there... when Gerhard Schroeder was re-elected chancellor in 2002, somebody made a parody of him on the Ketchup song where he lists all ways how he will raise taxes.

You may not want to listen to this but I post it anyway. For friends of the German language, it is at least masterfully rhymed. Whenever the Ketchup song is played I cannot think of anything else than Schroeder and his taxes. (In fact I wasn't much concerned about his taxes back then, far more about how he kept his Putin friendship even after Feb 2022, but that's another matter. Satanic anyway!)

Las Ketchup Kees surprises us with a Latin party banger and encourages us to dance and sing along! The song is actually better than I remembered it. It features a mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation which is rather rare with songs of this type. And hey, it is simply infectious!

Arling & Cameron Here we have a Dutch duo doing some nice easy listening/lounge type of music blended with a flavour of 60s retro style sound which is ideal for an elegant bar on a warm summer’s day or evening. Here is your cocktail, Kees!

Pierre-Olivier Berthet A French singer-songwriter I didn’t know before. This pop rock song is particularly characterised by very nice poetic lyrics in which Berthet skilfully describes the atmosphere at a French street café. Very nice!




Boards of Canada With “Aquarius” we dive into the depths of the deep blue sea. Boards of Canada confirm once again that they are rightly counted among the masters of IDM and electronic, ambient music.

Les Irrésistibles A very nice song in a 60s chamber pop rock style. There is a French version by Dalida that appears in a recent James Bond movie. I read that the band was based in France in the late 60s. It would be interesting to know who actually wrote that song? But anyway, l love this nostalgic tune, truely touching!

Magma Although this band is obviously well-known, I am not familiar with their music. I think this piece is quite interesting, but I can’t relate to it really.  I mean, mood-wise it doesn’t sound summery to my ears. I find their style of singing a little hard to get used to tbh, but maybe that's intentional. I don't get what the song is actually about?

The story has no meaning nor did I care to make sense, but the connection to Rapper's Delight is what made it more memorable. The "hip hop, hippity hop..." from that song is ingrained from my younger days, so I end up juxtaposing the two songs in my head, making the Ketchup Song more memorable. If I had not read about that, I would not have connected the two songs on my own, though now, it seems obvious.
