I just love the groovy, experimental music or Hackett - voyeur of the accurate is so prognostic!!! But I just dig the jams of howe and YESs. Which do you think is best, whether the only guitarist better than Fripp or the writer of Star of Sirius.

Hackett took more risks with his music, Howe was a more accomplished all-round guitar player. |

Hackett is technically better than Howe, being an extremely accomplished classical guitar player and incorporating a wider range of techniques into his music.
I think both are better than Robert Fripp, as are several other guitarists, but then I'm not a King Crimson anyway. The only guitarist I would rate higher than Hackett is Andy Latimer.

I'm not very familiar with these guys' solo outputs, but Howe in Yes stands out much more than Hackett in Genesis, at least from the Genesis I've heard so far (mostly Cryme and Foxtrot). I find him more integral to the sound of the band he's in, and I like his playing/tone more.
Also, how is this not a poll? This place is obsessed with polls.

You need a minimum of 20-40 posts I think (I don't remember) to make a poll on PA.

Hackett for me. Both are incredibly accomplished guitarists, but Hackett's playing resonates with me more on an emotional level

HERESY!! I've been playing guitar for close to 50 years now, and have met many of our heroes including Fripp and Howe. Very difficult to compare them as to "who is best?" Consider:
We are all very fortunate to live in a time where such musicians can play and flourish! There is no "better," only "superb in their craft." Peace, Charles |

In terms of influence on their particular band then Howe by several miles. The first classic YES album was much down to him and he became the main writer in the band guiding them on quite a journey through very varying albums such as TFTO, Drama and Relayer. He was more open minded in his approach and able to stand back when needed. Turn Of The Century is beautiful and what about And You and I. Hackett has nothing on Howe as a band player. In terms of solo career of course there is no comparison. Acolyte is classic era prog and easily a top 30 all time prog album. He has been remarkably consistent as well over recent years with a series of quality releases. At The Edge Of Light is my favourite but Surrender Of Silence, Out Of The Tunnels Mouth and Beyond The Shrouded Horizon are also great.
Probably neither can hold a candle to Fripp who is a remakable player and next to Hendrix stands as one of the great innovators of the instrument. IMO
