Being Interactive for the classic series isn't just about people submitting tracks to be included (and people voting), it's about listening to other people's choices, hopefully commenting and having some active group discussion/ conversation/ chat with people about the music. An issue I sometimes find in topics at PA is that there is so little obvious interaction between people who post that it feels like the individual posts act like islands even if no man is an island entire of itself, no, no woman neither though by your smiling you seem to say so. Oh, I'm mixing up my Donne and Shakespeare. Seems I have of late lost all my mirth....


  So glad you enjoyed Maud the Moth + trajedasaliva.  I will definitely comment a bit on each of my final choices.  I, too, like the conversations and discussions of these polls, which is what makes them so much more interesting than a popularity type poll.  I think you and all of the respondents have done a great job!

Top 5, not in any particular order, and some honourable mentions.

ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT- "The Sons and Daughters of Poor Eternal"  Electronica, very slow build on keyboards, with a shimmering drone-y background, makes me think of a preternatural dawn.  Soft female choral vocals and far off drums come in well into the piece.  A dawn march of the Fae perhaps.

Katie Kim - "Gentle Little Bird"  Female vocalist in a style that I think of as “lazy,” which is not a bad thing (think Cowboy Junkies).  Slide-y strings join in a swell with the underpinnings of drums and bass, an altogether melancholic piece that concludes with some angelic vocals and cello.

Low “Always Trying To Work It Out”  Languid music, sort of alt pop.  It progresses slowly with a feeling of inertia.  Washy guitars and blended male and female vocals.  Love this kind of stuff.

Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota) - Ein Traum Stately and elegant, piano and multi-layered vocals.  A feeling of tragedy, or perhaps a dirge here. Many voices join in, as a sound like bagpipes rises in the background, so perhaps it is a funereal piece.  I have to mention I love the artwork, too. 

Noveller “Rubicon”  Hypnotic ambient music here, repetitive tubular bells type sounds and some soaring guitar over sustained bass.

Honourable Mentions Due to Familiarity:

La théorie des cordes - "ALP La colosse d'Anatolie"  I have listened to this quite a bit (the whole release), and find the music pretty compelling.  It’s improvisational in nature, blending jazz, RIO and electronic into a mesmerizing mélange.

 Birth - "Cosmic Tears”  This was one of my favourite releases of last year, bravo for bringing it here!

Sarah Lipstate “Twin Peaks Theme Cover”  Putting these both here, because I know the music, although not heard this artist.  I will be checking out her Noveller release more.  Beautifully done, loved those Twin Peaks soundtracks.  So atmospherically perfect for the show.  Love that in the video the Red Room is recreated for the theme cover.   Laura’s theme is perfectly ominus and transcendent.

One full album, but this one is quite beautiful too, if you like 70s tinged pop with a modern take interspersed with some field and archive recordings: Uomo Donna. Some more "standard" pop songs, others almost proggy pieces of music...




Very nice, I enjoyed that piece very much. Sounds like quite the classic, and not classic 2022. I have been checking out some of Andrea Laszlo De Simone's other music on bandcamp, and it is eclectic. Wonderful, thanks.

Almost everything was either a great or a fascinating listen, so this was a very rewarding Interactive Play Poll, because I discovered some new artists. A quick run-through:

- ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT: Wonderful (as said earlier)! and added to my to-buy list.
- Jeremias Keller: Same here. Interesting approach and wonderful album!
- Secret Sky: Very nice so I listened to the album but I expected a bit more with this kind of instrumentation; the songs are rather conventional pop-rock songs.
- Maud the moth + trajedesaliva: Wonderful! Listened to the album (added to my to-buy list) and also explored a bit more from trajesdesaliva, who intrigue me more than Maud the Moth's solo work.
- Teke::Teke: Nice, but it has also something a bit gimmick-y.
- Katie Kim. Intrigued and listened to a couple of other tracks; will give the whole album a decent listen.
- iNFiNiEN: This one was already on my to-buy list; great album!
- Monika Roscher Bigband: Monika could make me start liking big band music. Listened to a couple of other tracks, of which some didn't convince me entirely, but this album also deserves a full listen.
- Uboa: The Flesh of the World is a great track, so I listened to the EP. Disappointed: the first track too ambient and the other two... Gosh, how I hate that kind of screaming. She has a great voice otherwise and the music is interesting, but...
- Birth: Nice to hear, every now and then, but this won't get into my collection.
- Voivod: No, thank you.
- Teeth of the Sea: Great track and I started listening to the album. Will listen to the full album, because this might find its way to my collection too (or some other album).
- black midi: Yes, very nice, but I'm not as enthused as others on these boards about this band.
- Thomas Ankersmit: Hmm, this needs me to be in the mood, but I will listen to the full piece when I am, because it is fascinating.
- Sylvie Courvoisier Trio: Very nice. Not that experimental to my ears, but a wonderful mix of contemporary music and jazz. Unfortunately only two tracks available on bandcamp, but I will try to listen to the whole album, because this one might also be added to my to-buy list and I will probably explore more of her work.
- Low: A bit slow, but at the same time captivating; I only have a vague memory of their work, so I might have to refresh that.
- Kristin Hayter: Minimalist and tense, as I like it (and she's not screaming yet!). Nice track.
- Noveller: Great track! Makes me think a bit of The Durutti Column. Listened also to a couple of other tracks; some a bit too ambient to my liking, others quite fascinating. Will listen to more of hers.

Thanks all! This gave me some great listening sessions. I'll vote for those that ended up on my to-buy list (or probably will soon): ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT, Jeremias Keller, Maud the moth + trajedesaliva, iNFiNiEN, Teeth of the Sea and Sylvie Courvoisier Trio. Maybe a couple of others will end up in my collection too, but that's less sure at the moment.

And now, strangely, after all this I want to listen to some Emerson, Lake & Palmer...

^^ Many thanks, Kees, very much appreciated. So glad you found not only songs/tracks to like but albums to delve into, and more music to explore. It's been the same for me. Maybe not the most variety, but diversity is not necessarily a preferable thing.

By the way, re Uboa, that is an outlier of hers. As a full album, Uboa's The Sky May Be (2018), which can be abrasive, has been my favourite of hers, but it's rather too ambient noise for my current tastes -- I have fallen asleep to it which is probably not good for mental health. The Origin of My Depression is her best known and likely most acclaimed. "Commonly hailed as Uboa's (aka Xandra Metcalfe) death industrial masterpiece, The Origin of My Depression is the perfect mix of ambient, harsh sounds, and abrasive screaming" (yours truly).

It was established in a recent topic that various people are resistant to listening to tracks outside the context of an album, and this may be a reason why many regulars here do not participate in or have only minimally participated in the Interactive polls over the years. That said, most of those would not want to check out the whole albums either, which is mire time-consuming of course, and lots just want to listen to their own music and some have systems in place for listening to music. I'm someone who really enjoys listening to these and also will often happily go days without putting on music (I may listen to less music on average than most here these days).

Mentioned already, but Interactive polls should scratch each other's backs. ;) It's more than "A POLL", it's a community of polls from our community -- it's the communal aspect that most draws me to these. Here's Eduardo's (Heart of the Matter) Interactive poll (the newest one) which came out a few days after this one, and is a different take and framework for highlighting some modern music. 2023 Epics Interactive Poll I would have mentioned Swans' Beggar Lover (Three), but will think of something else, maybe. Not surprisingly, that is very Prog-centric, and I am not as into modern Prog as some (or if I am it tends to more outlier, questionably Prog stuff -- love Swans of course). If only Anna von Hausswolff had one this year....

Many thanks to Greg for setting this poll up and to everyone for your contributions. Lots of good listens and I did delve into full albums as well.

Artists that were familiar to me were already familar to me were iNFiNiEN, Monika Roscher Bigband, Birth, Voivod, and Black Midi. With iNFiNiEN, Monika Roscher Bigband, and Voivod, I have earlier albums by them and their recent albums are on my to buy list. iNFiNiEN's album I had listened to a number of times and having a subscription to a music streaming service has the benefit of getting exposure to a lot of new and old music, but I don't always get around to purchasing, which I want to do to support the artists. 

Voivod is an old favorite that I haven’t really listened to much of their newer stuff. The track posted is good but falls into sounding like just another Voivod track to me. I had already purchased the Birth album last year and I have given several listens to Black Midi through Amazon Music since they are highly regarded here but they just haven’t quite click with me. 

Like Greg, I’ll restrict my voting to not dilute value but that’s hard. I think I have settled on 6.

ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT - The Sons and Daughters of Poor Eternal: This was even better in the context of the full album and I am prone to like these cinematic   

Jeremias Keller – Silicium: Very intriguing and again a better listen for me as full album.

Maud the moth + trajedesaliva – Perla: I need to get a translation, but sonically, the album was wonderful listening experience. The textures and the spoken word parts gave a full “concept album” experience without knowing the words.

La théorie des cordes - ALP La colosse d'Anatolie: Some great musicianship and composition. This also benefited from a full album listening.

Monika Roscher Bigband - Starlight Nightcrash: I had not listened to the album prior to the posting but have since, and I just enjoyed the entire experience with the modern big band sound. I am definitely prone to liking me some brass.

Sylvie Courvoisier Trio - Imprint Double: Really good jazz and the interplay of the three instruments is wonderful. All standouts but I really enjoyed the drumming. While the full album isn’t available to listen on Bandcamp, I have it queued up on Amazon Music. 

Fourth (and final you hope) share. I just came across this band on my Bandcamp feed and this should add to some diversity as I guess I would describe it as alt rock country soul with Bandcamp tags of alternative rock and art punk. Probably not going to gain any new listeners here but this video makes it on my list of all-time WTF music videos.  A young band as their debut album was 2 years ago and recorded when the band members were just teenagers. This track has a classic rock feel like the Rolling Stones and I enjoy this retro sound. From their 2023 album 3D Country.

Note to Greg. As to not add more non-diversity to this, I’ll only provide a Bandcamp link. Your suggestions collectively reminded me of a recent discovery, the band BIG|BRAVE and their latest album nature morte, though they have been around for about 10 years. Their music is labeled as post metal/ambient metal. They are from Montreal and associated with the post-rock scene there and the producer of their album also produced Lingua Ignota’s last album. Are you familiar with them?

Listened to this more than once now but usually while doing other things, and some of these obviously need full concentration to do them justice. The thing with "as many votes as you like" is that it's hard to decide where to stop. But anyway, great playlist once more, and for now I vote for Perla, ALP La colosse d'Anatolie, Voodoo Spinning, The Flesh of the World, Cosmic Tears, Visitor, Imprint Double, Ein Traum, I nostri giorni. These are really wonderful. Maybe I add some later. I already knew the Infinien and black midi album (artists! you don't make it easier mentioning you if you mess up upper and lower cases!), so I won't vote for them. Infinien is a real highlight. Not quite so sold on black midi.

No time yet to explore full albums, but thanks for providing all the links. I guess a good number will end up in my collection.

By the way, my mother died last night.   It's been a long time coming, not unexpected, and I have spent much of the last few days with her (the nursing home let me know last week that she had taken a turn for the worse, and so I stayed at her condo, which we had wanted to keep in case she could go back home at some time). Right now it's busy trying to arrange things and let her friends know. It's been quite a saga. Anyway, really busy with a lot of related matters, but wanted to say something if I seem to disappear for a while.

I appreciate it. I'm okay, I've been preparing for this day for a long time. Well mentally at least, a lot of related things I'm rushing to do. I'll be consoling a lot of her friends.
