This is another variation on the Interactive Polls and Interactive Playlist polls, operating more like the latter.

For this poll I ask people to mention music they are into from the past several years (I'm quite flexible) that they got into over the past, say, six months (again, roughly, and I'll leave that exact time period to your discretion). The point is that it's music of modern times (contemporary) that you got into quite recently. Just do the best you can within reason. For me, I would go with music of this current decade.

Feel free to mention up to two tracks per post, and I will try to add those in a timely manner to the playlist. On second thought, please try to make it one per post like with the Interactive Playlist topics.

You can mention more later, but try to leave at least a day between posts if no one else has mentioned any others. Hopefully it won't take very long to fill up the options. Once we have 25 options then we should be ready to put them up in the poll and start voting. Note: If there are more than 25 tracks that turn up before I put up the poll, then I would want to have as many people included as possible and try to fairly evenly distribute the numbers of choices that each person puts up -- meaning that someone with, say, five, might not get all into the poll to allow someone with less or none an entry or entries in the poll despite who got in first.

There is no set time limit. I do ask that you think that your entries are not likely to be well-known here if possible. I would avoid the biggest names. Prog, non-Prog and quasi[modo]-Prog is allowed.

People who nominate music need not listen to the playlist and vote, but it is encouraged that people take a listen before voting (at least try to get a sense of all the choices. And commenting on the music is encouraged. Also, feel free to vote even if you did not suggest music. Please do not vote for your own choice or choices, and please no one vote until all the choices are up. Not sure if I will add the suggestions to the poll as we go along or just update with the numbers (the first is easier for people to follow). I then ask people to vote for "up to five" track choices (or six or seven if you are really keen).

Oh and for mentioning music I ask that you have the name of the artist, followed by the track name and the year. Then post a youtube video of it if available (otherwise bandcamp link, maybe vimeo...). Youtube works best due to the playlist. If you have problems with links, not only can I do that for you, but I can explain how its done -- if you quote a post with a video embed you should be able to see see how it's done with the tube tags and youtube code after v= . If you also can copy and paste it should be a breeze.

So here is my first choice...

This is the most recent album that I got into other than Swans' The Beggar.

ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT - The Sons and Daughters of Poor Eternal (2023 off the album Darling the Dawn, from Quebec)

Here is the playlist:

EDIT: I decided to add music to the suggestions as we go along as with George's. I think that gives it more interest and vibrancy. I like to see it fill up and not have to do all of that at once but instead as we go along I will enable multiple votes later on.

LATEST EDIT: Feel free to nominate until we reach 25 (I may not add them quickly), and vote for as many as you like (just not your own please) -- voting is open. Thanks to all you nominated tracks and for any comments on any of the tracks.

Ian (Nogbad) played this in his show. Swiss instrumental music in Sonar tradition, so right up my alley. Currently not listed on PA as far as I know, but would probably fit.

Really taken by this whole release (including my mini-review for an intro):  Secret Sky “Opium”  A  collaboration of two fine musicians I’ve had the pleasure of hearing for years with Loreena McKennitt, Brian Hughes (Electric & Acoustic Guitars, Oud, Cuatro, Bass, Guitar Synthesizer, Loops & Drum programming) and Caroline Lavelle (Vocals, Cello & Whistles).  The electric guitar, in particular, is immediately recognizable in Hughes’ signature style and Lavelle’s rich cello and sultry voice are a perfect pairing.  Rounding out the sound are special guests, also gleaned from McKennitt’s fold of fine accompanists on violin, drums & percussion, bass, and lyra.  As one would expect, this is an epicurean’s blend of world music, with the emphasis on Middle Eastern and Celtic, along with some jazz for complex flavour.  Using the title track here:

^^ Thanks, Christian, my choice too is not in PA but likely would be accepted in Post-Rock.

I'm loving "Sicilium". If I added as we went along and opened votes before nominations are up this would be an auto-vote from me. That was great -- playing it now for the second time. I will give whole Alloy album a spin anon. Very much my kind of thing.

^ Nickie, listening to Opium now, which is more out of my wheelhouse, and enjoying this too.

A second offering, again using my mini-review for an intro:  Maud the moth + trajedesaliva “Bordando el manto Terrestre” This stunning Spanish release is at once       transcendent, and eerie. It’s a phantasmagoric trip into the life of Remedios Varo, a surrealist painter, who lived in exile in Mexico, after fleeing from war in both Spain and France. This reminds me much of the spiritual works of Hildegard of Bingen, who also touched upon feverish visions for both her visual art and her music. All of this is captured in waves of organ, miscellaneous keyboards, hushed vocals, and guitars, leaving one with a sense of the holy and haunted.  A brilliant and unsettling release.  Using the track, "Perla."

On PA, but I guess not that much known yet and that should be corrected, because what I've discovered just recently is one wonderful band: La théorie des cordes. A https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=130859" rel="nofollow - recent thread - with information and explanations - pointed me to their latest release of this year (listen to it on https://matzizrecords.bandcamp.com/album/4u-9525" rel="nofollow - bandcamp ). A wonderful jazzy and post-rocky album, which led me to their other exceptional releases...

I am going to repost the last track I posted in Greg's one YouTube video per post thread, but I will say a little more about this Montreal-based Japanese psych-rock seven-piece called Teke::Teke. They started out as a tribute band to the music of Takeshi Terauchi, the king of Japanese surf music. Maya Kuroki was a regular at their shows and became their vocalist as they started writing originals. I first heard of them a few months back from a track off their 2021 debut album Shirushi that popped up on my Amazon discovery playlist. It's a fabulous mix of psychedelic, surf, and Japanese music. The instruments are guitar, bass, drums, flute, and trombone. Then a couple of weeks ago, they released their second album Hagata. An even more adventurous outing than their first. Both albums are fantastic.

^^ Kees: And I love that ALP... too. I realise that I likely will want to dispense with my idea of limiting votes as the suggestions have already been just way too good per my tastes and if these keep up, I'll be voting for most everything (I would not vote for my own).

^ And George, and that Teke::Teke - Hoppe is so exuberant and wonderful. Loving it too. This is the "bestest" listing of music per my tastes in a row that I can recall in these polls.

Limiting the number of votes is not just out the window, it's hit clear out of the park -- well, other than don't vote for your own because that's just not cricket.

^ & ^^ While "Perla" is the pearl of my eye, both are excellent submissions.

I'll do a second, which is Katie Kim's "Gentle Little Bird" off the album Hour of the Ox, which was released in September 2022. She is from London originally and now in Dublin (I love Dublin and southern Ireland generally and would like to live there myself).

This is sounding great. Only two tracks in. "The Sons and Daughters of Poor Eternal" is a strong opener with the organ/drone.

I love Silicium. It makes we envision a cross-country train ride through a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Looking forward to hearing the rest.

Ok, here's a first proposal from me.

Monika Roscher is a German jazz and independent guitarist, composer, singer and big band leader. Her band attracted national attention with their mixture of big band brass sections, elements of rock, pop and electro, as well as cinematic sound dramaturgies.

I chose a live video because the performance is an integral component of their art. The song was apparently written earlier but only released on their latest album.

Owwww, this risks to hurt my wallet. Haven't listened yet to Mila's suggestion and I have listened to the iNFiNiEN album a couple of weeks/months ago and it is really a great album. But I'm very impresses by the other suggestions so far and will definitely explore the albums they're from. They're all quite awesome to my ears. I see that Ephrim Menuck - of Silver Mt. Zion fame - is at the source of ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT, so that alone is already a recommendation...

Talking about post-rock, you remember my Mondkopf suggestion a https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=129513&PID=6027732#6027732" rel="nofollow - couple of IA-polls ago ? So, after I came to his album, I started to explore what he had done before or otherwise and learned he's part of Oiseaux-Tempête. Didn't know this band, but I discovered today that they are on PA (however, the database is not really up-to-date: at least five or six albums from their more recent discography are missing...). They are rapidly becoming one of my favourite post-rock bands. From their latest album What On Earth (Que Diable):

^ Thanks, Kees. I like that a lot.

^^^^^ George, yep, having listened to it all, I think that it's a wonderful playlist.

^^^^Thanks, ipd.

^^ Mila, I considered suggesting something off Monika Roscher Bigband's Witchy Activities and the Maple Death. I like the whole Witches Brew suite, but it gets divided up into smaller tracks. I was thinking MRB is one you might well appreciate.

I decided to make links to the albums at bandcamp that feature these tracks. The poll is still about the tracks, not the albums, but I know that some at PA do not like to listen to individual tracks and I want to give more exposure for the music. Also, I would like to hear various album here in full for my own pleasure.

Thanks, I don't know how many beyond the regulars check the Interactive polls and would find it useful, let alone how many who participate would check out the links at some time, but I'm all for even potential exposure. I think that I will start a topic in General Music Discussions where I can drop these links and people can add more links to contemporary albums that they have heard as recent finds. Or just another 2020s list topic, in General Music discussions, but I do like those topics that include links and preferably a little basic info about the albums.

Mila: For Monika Roscher Bigband's Starlight Nightcrash, fantastic song, I did use your alternative, the official video off the album Witchy Activities and the Maple Death as it is the version off the studio album rather than the live witch or which is from 2017. Great choice of track from MRB. I almost went with one off the latest album myself, but I couldn't decide on which one. That would have been a great choice. ^ Lol. Trying to get the attention of PAers can be like trying to suck blood from a stone. Okay, I’m really just saying that to keep up the sucking blood theme. That would strike me as not on-topic enough, and maybe a bit crass (a more negative term than I want, but adroit words with the right finesse escape me). I’m not a big one for promotion really, although I do like to bring recognition to art and issues that I care about. I would be a terrible salesman. The Goth poll would be for much later. I had wanted to do an Interactive playlist of the dark wave and ethereal wave variety to complement your New Wave one. Maybe No Wave, synthwave and booty wave too. If you don’t know bootywave, it’s like a booty tsunami according to a song featured on The Onion.

I'm going to put up a third. If there are enough people then I might have this as a write-in and still in the playlist. Uboa (aka Xandra Metcalfe) is an artist that I got into very soon after discovering Lingua Ignota (aka Kristin Hayter). She can be quite extreme, and part of what I like in music is pretty extreme. I might have gone for a more extreme, kind of screaming track (in part), but I'll save people's ears. This still brings the Noise but also is melodic, and brings a rather repetitious groove I like. Earlier this year I listened to her EP The Flesh of the World. It is from 2020, so earlier than the other choices so far.

Here is the title track off Uboa's The Flesh of the World.

^ Thanks, that's some good retro psych/space prog. And I hope more will decide to share two videos, or three, or maybe even four.... I would like to fill up the options ideally, but while it would be nice to have some less usual-to-this names joining us, at least I know that the regulars have great taste!

Thanks to all who have participated this far.

That video is unavailable to me, but this is the same (as evidenced by when I added it to my playlist and set my options to show unavailable video) and does work for me.

^ It seems I meanwhile have a knack for choosing the right stuff here. No wonder, it's been two years now since I joined PA. On the other hand, it's a pity that I adapt maybe too much to the musical taste here, because I have a great variety of music up my sleeve. I know Teke::Teke as well btw, kexp is one of your favourite music sources on youtube, right? Tongue

Great choice!  One of my favourites from 2022!
My mini-review in Bandcamp: New psychedelia and prog blend from San Diego really capture the experimentalism and sound of the original periods as they began to merge with one another. Indeed, this is a marriage between two bands, Astra, and Psicomagia, that is a very successful one. Instruments are synths, electric piano, organ, electric and acoustic guitars, bass and drums. This band mixes all of the best of psych and prog and creates a satisfying mélange that deserves repeated listenings. Favorite track: For Yesterday.

It's thanks to the Rate Your Music charts. I often look for music there and check it out if it looks interesting to me, and it most certainly did. For one, I often favour female artist names, and modern music. She was not so prominent when I found her latest album, I think, last month, but I use search terms to look for of interest to me music. Witchy Activities and the Maple Death is now #18 for 2023 in the all-music charts there. For art pop as genre or influence, which is a common search term for me, she is at number three there for 2023. That said, I did know her name before that.

As for adapting ones tastes, I don't for the polls (I go with what I know and really like and I think fits) but exposure to music by others definitely has an effect on my tastes and can open up new horizons and new passions. I've been at PA along time and my tastes have rather grown and changed alongside certain elements here. These days I am more of a lone wolf on the prowl for music.

Yes, KEXP is a great source. Though nowadays, most new to me music comes from the weekly Amazon playlist and poking around Bandcamp. Often, after hearing something of interest, it seems like a good number have been on KEXP. Great live sessions. I also like seeing NPR's Tiny Desk and Audiotree live sessions.

A few more tracks in and I am liking it all. Really dig the Middle Eastern flavors and guitar in "Opium" and the concept and vocals in "Perla". The instrumental track suggested by Kees (title too much to type on my phone) is great as well.

iNFiNiEN and Birth were both favorites from last year.

I will suggest one more recent to me. A track by this group was suggested by New Zealand Nick a couple of years back in the Heaven and Hell poll but I had forgotten even though I voted for it and the paired track. I was reminded when I searched the forums. So, re-discovered Teeth of the Sea a few months through a random click on Bandcamp app due to being all thumbs.

They are on PA with some high ratings, but their most recent Wraith from 2019 has only 9 ratings. They are supposed to have new album out at the end of the year.

One of the things I like about this group is their use of trumpet. From Wraith, I suggest VISITOR with guest percussionist Valentina Magaletti of Vanadhing Twin.

There is one 4-star review from Mike (TCat) on PA. I miss his contributions. Hope he is okay.

Thinking about stuff I have discovered that maybe people here are not aware of, it was more or less inevitable for those who know me Cool that I'd come up with something from the experimental electronic music camp. I checked this guy out because he was playing in Bologna in May, and he didn't disappoint for sure.

It's always exciting to discover new music sources! I could easily call myself an addict. LOL

I like to search for specific music genres or music from a certain cultural area. So, I read various foreign music magazines, check out foreign live session broadcasts or certain music labels, and the like. You may remember, last year I suggested an IA-poll which was about live music. It's worthwile to take a look at the programme of certain concert venues from time to time. A good way to stay in the loop imo even if you don't attend the concert. Smile

Here's another one from me, something for experimental music fans:

Swiss-born pianist and composer Sylvie Courvoisier has spent close to twenty years in New York honing her distinctive approach to classically inflected jazz improvisation. Courvoisier draws from both her conservatory background and her work in the creative jazz world to produce music of a very broad palette.

Along the way she's worked with a who's-who of leading-edge musicians, including veterans like John Zorn, Evan Parker and Ellery Eskelin, but also the younger generation of avant-gardists such as Mary Halvorson and Nate Wooley.

Here’s a recent recording with her own trio featuring bassist Drew Gress and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Their latest album is available on youtube only in full. So, I have for you a track off their previous album instead.

But seriously, good to see you even if this is a challenge for you (if that's were you were coming from).

Great choice of track from a great album. That's a pretty popular album here at PA and RYM. It was one of my collab albums of the year and it was the Collab album of the year at Prog Archives (for those who don't know). I like it more now than ever, and RateYourMusic played a part in me listening to and getting all of the black midi albums (Cavalcade is the one that made me a serious fan, although I already had liked Schlagenheim before).

As for Voivod, I'm usually not that big on a lot of, shall i say, related music, but Voivod I really like, including that track.

-------------------------------------------------------

Since we're on an even newer page than the last new page (funny how things work like that) and I know some forum members usually only look at the most recent page if clicking on a topic, here is the playlist:

And here are links to the whole albums on bandcamp (and in one case a youtube playlist; could have done Spotify). I established in a topic of mine that various people are resistant to listening to tracks outside the context of an album:

While my comments merely have expressed my enjoyment rather than being descriptive of the music, there are three recent ones that have gone totally without comment by me and I am listening for the first time (will edit this post as I listen to more tracks).

The first is Teeth of the Sea - "VISITOR". I am loving this. First impressions are that I love this kind of electronic music with synthwave like 80s qualities -- reminds me a bit of some Com Truise (like Data Kiss) for its retro qualities, but this turns out to be way more eclectic. Amazing combination of electronics and rock with some jazzy qualities. Wow, this is big, this is epic.

Now... after a quick lunch. Thomas Ankersmit - "Perceptual Geography". This on the other hand, while also on the electronics side and of similar length, is not big like that, but a much more minimalistic piece. This youtube comment for the video says it, umm, well not says it all, but it says "IT":

And now: Sylvie Courvoisier Trio - "Imprint Double" off D'Agala. This is sophisticated avant-garde jazz meets modern classical. Superb. This is the kind of music I sometimes would like to play loud in the car to offset or counterpoint the kinds of music I commonly hear playing really loud in cars (often Mustangs). I don't because I don't wish to disturb others. Sometimes I wish I drove a tank.... "Think that's a bass boom? Check out my boom!" ;)

Now going backwards sort of:

black midi - "Welcome to Hell". This already was a favourite of mine from the year. It is such a great song, and while I often don't pay attention to lyrics, this is one where I would.

Voivod - "Planet Eaters". This is great, I really like the hardcore punk qualities (rather Motorhead). I have liked other Voivod, but this is my fave from them.

Birth - "Cosmic Tears". This is a hugely enjoyable track with retro psych/space qualities and classic prog nods while also sounding modern.

Uboa - "The Flesh of the World". A rather easy-listening and catchy track from Uboa with minimal noise,. Of course I like it since I mentioned it.

^ Thank you, Lorenzo, I have added that to the playlist and to the poll. While I would be pleased if people continue to nominate more music, the poll (multiple choice) is open. Feel free to vote for as many as you like.

I'll add another track, which is a recent discovery of mine from what became a favourite artist. This is a song from the December 24, 2003 release of the Pentiment OST (a video game soundtrack). It says Kristin Hayter in the credits, and that is Lingua Ignota's real name. It also was released as a Lingua Ignota song the day before.

^ Greg, the increasing amount of music to be heard is reaching its limits imo. As nice as it may be to have a beautiful music collection, the likelyhood that people will listen to it decreases. Besides musical diversity increases with the number of participants imo, rather than with the number of songs alone. Wink

^ I've found it easy to keep up and listen to everything here. I almost always listen as these things go along even when I don't comment. Been plenty of time I would think, but if others don't want to, I'm fine with that. I hoped to make this a positive experience as host, but yeah, I guess it doesn't work for others. My bad. I hugely enjoyed George's polls, but I think he went about it better than I did. And maybe people are burnt out again, so simplest would be best next.

I would have just let this one rest in peace had Lorenzo not responded. .     Maybe it's selfish that it's almost enough for me that I discovered great music thanks to this poll, and it's fine for me to share music whether people want to listen or not in something like this where it is not a requirement (I had thought about writing a message where people might want to ignore more than one of mine).   No one needs to listen to or vote for anything. I only feel bad for the effort that people put into thinking and responding. This will be my last, at least as host, realised it doesn't suit me. By the way, I know I posted more tracks than others, and If people listen and vote, please just ignore my choices (All Hands Make Light, Katie Kim, Uboa, and Kristin Hayter).

Heart of the Matter made another modern Interactive Poll after this, and I would rather people focus on that if they can -- I don't think he's been a regular and I like the idea of encouraging and accommodating new blood. https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=131191" rel="nofollow - 2023 Epics Interactive Poll Swans' The Beggar Lover (Three) is a great track.

I find this to be a positive experience. Had been listening a but at a rime without comment and have enjoyed this.

While I have no data to support this, I feel that overall participation on PA has been down this past week. Mostly concentrated bursts from a few forum regulars. That's my impression.

I had kept a slow place with this one so there would be some room for new voices. But I certainly wouldn't want to see these remaining slots go without tracks so I will have another suggestion in my next post.

I had discovered Noveller at the beginning of this year after randomly reading an article about female guitarists. Noveller is Sarah Lipstate. Besides her solo work as Noveller, she is the guitarist for Iggy Pop's current backing band. She records ambient soundscapes. From her 2015 album Fantastic Planet, I had posted the track Into the Dunes in Greg's one YouTube video thread. So, here's another track from this fantastic album.

Noveller - Rubicon (2015)

And as a bonus for Greg as I know he is a Twin Peaks fan, Sarah Lipstate is a big fan as well and released in 2021 a couple of covers with videos of the Twin Peaks main theme and Laura Palmer's Theme.

@Greg
Contemporary sound is what I'm into, so I feel all the more the need to comment. Now we are at about two hours listening time and I realized that I won't make it. The same happened with one of George's polls. It's summer time and I can't check the forum every day. I believe it's the same for others, too. So do not take my comment personally please.

^^ Mila, I prefer to take most everything here personally, I tend to prefer that to taking comments as impersonal. I liked that you addressed me personally, but I know you did not just mean this poll and I know what you mean. I don't check this site every day, but I have ad-free youtube and bookmark the playlist. Listening is pretty easy, at least for me, especially as there is no time limit and I often multitask, but commenting is harder. If you have time, I hope you do a shorter contemporary poll -- say one nomination per person, maybe eight people, maybe 5 five minute max tracks, or whatever. No hard feelings on my part, but I do wish I had done things differently. They can be time-consuming to put together and update, which is why much as I enjoy the music, I sometimes think I am too lacking in time to take them on. In summer I often am very, very busy with work. That newest Interactive Poll I linked to before is easier to put together. Room for lots of different styles.

@ George: I loved listening to the Noveller Rubicon as well as the Sarah Liptaste covers. Terrific what she does with that guitar and guitar effects. And, yes, seeing the red Waiting Room is a very nice touch. In the second video I suspect that she is in the White Lodge. We just need a white Angel too.

I had a typo in Sarah's last name. Should be Lipstate, not Liptaste.

Here's some additional info on the video from an article https://northerntransmissions.com/noveller-shares-cover-of-twin-peaks-theme/" rel="nofollow - here .

Quote Continuing their string of video collaborations, Sarah Lipstate draws the somber notes out in front of director George Griffith’s camera. Griffith, is definitely known to Twin Peaks fans, as the actor/director memorably portrayed the devilish right hand man Ray Monroe in Twin Peaks: The Return. The pair traveled to Washington, visiting landmarks from the show and filming in the recreated Black Lodge of superfan Jason Mattson. Mattson sourced and built everything for the room on his own, and did so with such perfection that the Showtime production actually used his chair for filming. Lipstate settles into the exact same spot that Kyle MacLachlan couldn’t seem to leave as Agent Dale Cooper.

I realised that I could easily vote for almost all of these, but then if I vote for almost all of them, it kind of makes the voting feel a little pointless and diminishes my votes as meaningful. It's bit like giving that "thanks" button a click for posts. If you thank every post then the thanks seems much less heartfelt, sincere and meaningful.

I opted for five. In doing so I am only going to consider one per submitter, and while there are three albums that music is off here that I had heard, if it sounds fresh again to me (I was so into back midi some time back, maybe too much) and made me appreciate it all the more, then I will give it a vote. That happened with Mila's Monika Roscher Bigband - Starlight Nightcrash. And I knew on first listen that all of these would get a vote, and on my second and now my quick third refresher (just takes a little of the song to remind me).

So here are my five choices (all ended up being in the first nine so maybe getting in early did affect my decisions):

- Jeremias Keller - Silicium
- Maud the moth + trajedesaliva - Perla
- La théorie des cordes - ALP La colosse d'Anatolie:
- Teke::Teke - Hoppe
- Monika Roscher Bigband: Starlight Nightcrash

There are four spots still open, and if any of those fill out, then I may give one or more of those a vote too.

If you decide to vote, feel free to vote how you like. I do hope hope take some time to listen (maybe even just one per submitter, thread is not long to see that, takes a few minutes) and comment even a bit. Being Interactive for the classic series isn't just about people submitting tracks to be included (and people voting), it's about listening to other people's choices, hopefully commenting and having some active group discussion/ conversation/ chat with people about the music. An issue I sometimes find in topics at PA is that there is so little obvious interaction between people who post that it feels like the individual posts act like islands even if no man is an island entire of itself, no, no woman neither though by your smiling you seem to say so. Oh, I'm mixing up my Donne and Shakespeare. Seems I have of late lost all my mirth....

Once again, thank you for the wonderful selections, the conversation, including potential critiques, and the bonhomie. It does take hours hosting these as I have, but it was worth it even if I worry that it has been dissatisfying to some. Sorry if I seemed to take your comments a bit hard, Mila. I was already feeling very awkward about posting a fourth track. Of course with all the time put into these I want it to be an enjoyable and positive experience for all. I figured one need not listen to all by person if the desire, or listen to full tracks.... And I would be fine with someone saying that they will only comment on one or two selections per individual. I had wanted to see the poll filled out and I would have appreciated three or four from others here. You only shared the two, but I would hardly have minded more. Maybe if you discount all of mine, you might find the time to comment on the others. No time limit, so it can be past summer if summer is too busy for people.

I think Lorenzo may have summed up the potential issue best on including lots of tracks from the https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=126621&PID=5910385#5910385" rel="nofollow - Heaven-Sent and Hell-Bent poll , and I have meant to take that to heart (especially as it came from the series starter who had done an earlier duos poll, and has been most keen on the Interactive Polls survival).

In that poll I asked people not to nominate unless they plan to vote (that directive failed, but I figured it might limit participation except for the most keen), but I figured in this one following George's model that people would feel freer to listen or not to listen and so I felt more flexible in a way.

Yes, many good listens, so far. I will comment on some a bit later, but I also took some time to listen to whole albums (thanks for those bandcamp links; makes things a lot easier and incites to explore more than just the proposed track!).

But first an additional suggestion, and something a bit different. Five or six months ago this track was played regularly on my preferred - and very eclectic - https://www.radiofrance.fr/fip" rel="nofollow - radio station and I thought: "How is it possible that I never heard this before?" Because, to me, this undoubtedly had been a big hit in the 70s... Well, it was released just six months ago, and very much a product of its time when you listen to the lyrics. The last few lines translate (I think) as:

There's a cold wind blowing over our days
And behind the doors
Cupboards full of dreams
Wait for the return
Of our life.

Andrea Laslo de Simone - I nostri giorni:

Of course, I explored a bit what he had done before and found his bandcamp page. One full album, but this one is quite beautiful too, if you like 70s tinged pop with a modern take interspersed with some field and archive recordings: https://andrealaszlodesimoneofficial.bandcamp.com/album/uomo-donna" rel="nofollow - Uomo Donna . Some more "standard" pop songs, others almost proggy pieces of music...

So glad you enjoyed Maud the Moth + trajedasaliva.  I will definitely comment a bit on each of my final choices.  I, too, like the conversations and discussions of these polls, which is what makes them so much more interesting than a popularity type poll.  I think you and all of the respondents have done a great job!

Top 5, not in any particular order, and some honourable mentions.

ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT- "The Sons and Daughters of Poor Eternal"  Electronica, very slow build on keyboards, with a shimmering drone-y background, makes me think of a preternatural dawn.  Soft female choral vocals and far off drums come in well into the piece.  A dawn march of the Fae perhaps.

Katie Kim - "Gentle Little Bird"  Female vocalist in a style that I think of as “lazy,” which is not a bad thing (think Cowboy Junkies).  Slide-y strings join in a swell with the underpinnings of drums and bass, an altogether melancholic piece that concludes with some angelic vocals and cello.

Low “Always Trying To Work It Out”  Languid music, sort of alt pop.  It progresses slowly with a feeling of inertia.  Washy guitars and blended male and female vocals.  Love this kind of stuff.

Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota) - Ein Traum Stately and elegant, piano and multi-layered vocals.  A feeling of tragedy, or perhaps a dirge here. Many voices join in, as a sound like bagpipes rises in the background, so perhaps it is a funereal piece.  I have to mention I love the artwork, too.

Noveller “Rubicon”  Hypnotic ambient music here, repetitive tubular bells type sounds and some soaring guitar over sustained bass.

Honourable Mentions Due to Familiarity:

La théorie des cordes - "ALP La colosse d'Anatolie"  I have listened to this quite a bit (the whole release), and find the music pretty compelling.  It’s improvisational in nature, blending jazz, RIO and electronic into a mesmerizing mélange.

Birth - "Cosmic Tears”  This was one of my favourite releases of last year, bravo for bringing it here!

Sarah Lipstate “Twin Peaks Theme Cover”  Putting these both here, because I know the music, although not heard this artist.  I will be checking out her Noveller release more.  Beautifully done, loved those Twin Peaks soundtracks.  So atmospherically perfect for the show.  Love that in the video the Red Room is recreated for the theme cover.   Laura’s theme is perfectly ominus and transcendent.

Very nice, I enjoyed that piece very much. Sounds like quite the classic, and not classic 2022. I have been checking out some of Andrea Laszlo De Simone's other music on bandcamp, and it is eclectic. Wonderful, thanks.

Almost everything was either a great or a fascinating listen, so this was a very rewarding Interactive Play Poll, because I discovered some new artists. A quick run-through:

- ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT: Wonderful (as said earlier)! and added to my to-buy list.
- Jeremias Keller: Same here. Interesting approach and wonderful album!
- Secret Sky: Very nice so I listened to the album but I expected a bit more with this kind of instrumentation; the songs are rather conventional pop-rock songs.
- Maud the moth + trajedesaliva: Wonderful! Listened to the album (added to my to-buy list) and also explored a bit more from trajesdesaliva, who intrigue me more than Maud the Moth's solo work.
- Teke::Teke: Nice, but it has also something a bit gimmick-y.
- Katie Kim. Intrigued and listened to a couple of other tracks; will give the whole album a decent listen.
- iNFiNiEN: This one was already on my to-buy list; great album!
- Monika Roscher Bigband: Monika could make me start liking big band music. Listened to a couple of other tracks, of which some didn't convince me entirely, but this album also deserves a full listen.
- Uboa: The Flesh of the World is a great track, so I listened to the EP. Disappointed: the first track too ambient and the other two... Gosh, how I hate that kind of screaming. She has a great voice otherwise and the music is interesting, but...
- Birth: Nice to hear, every now and then, but this won't get into my collection.
- Voivod: No, thank you.
- Teeth of the Sea: Great track and I started listening to the album. Will listen to the full album, because this might find its way to my collection too (or some other album).
- black midi: Yes, very nice, but I'm not as enthused as others on these boards about this band.
- Thomas Ankersmit: Hmm, this needs me to be in the mood, but I will listen to the full piece when I am, because it is fascinating.
- Sylvie Courvoisier Trio: Very nice. Not that experimental to my ears, but a wonderful mix of contemporary music and jazz. Unfortunately only two tracks available on bandcamp, but I will try to listen to the whole album, because this one might also be added to my to-buy list and I will probably explore more of her work.
- Low: A bit slow, but at the same time captivating; I only have a vague memory of their work, so I might have to refresh that.
- Kristin Hayter: Minimalist and tense, as I like it (and she's not screaming yet!). Nice track.
- Noveller: Great track! Makes me think a bit of The Durutti Column. Listened also to a couple of other tracks; some a bit too ambient to my liking, others quite fascinating. Will listen to more of hers.

Thanks all! This gave me some great listening sessions. I'll vote for those that ended up on my to-buy list (or probably will soon): ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT, Jeremias Keller, Maud the moth + trajedesaliva, iNFiNiEN, Teeth of the Sea and Sylvie Courvoisier Trio. Maybe a couple of others will end up in my collection too, but that's less sure at the moment.

And now, strangely, after all this I want to listen to some Emerson, Lake & Palmer...

^^ Many thanks, Kees, very much appreciated. So glad you found not only songs/tracks to like but albums to delve into, and more music to explore. It's been the same for me. Maybe not the most variety, but diversity is not necessarily a preferable thing.

By the way, re Uboa, that is an outlier of hers. As a full album, Uboa's The Sky May Be (2018), which can be abrasive, has been my favourite of hers, but it's rather too ambient noise for my current tastes -- I have fallen asleep to it which is probably not good for mental health. The Origin of My Depression is her best known and likely most acclaimed. "Commonly hailed as Uboa's (aka Xandra Metcalfe) death industrial masterpiece, The Origin of My Depression is the perfect mix of ambient, harsh sounds, and abrasive screaming" (yours truly).

To make it super easy for people to find, here is the playlist again on youtube:

And here, now updated, are links to the applicable whole albums. It was established in a recent topic that various people are resistant to listening to tracks outside the context of an album, and this may be a reason why many regulars here do not participate in or have only minimally participated in the Interactive polls over the years. That said, most of those would not want to check out the whole albums either, which is mire time-consuming of course, and lots just want to listen to their own music and some have systems in place for listening to music. I'm someone who really enjoys listening to these and also will often happily go days without putting on music (I may listen to less music on average than most here these days).

All are welcome to join in with contemporary/modern tracks they like that are fairly recent discoveries to you, there are only three spots left. You don't even have to comment, vote or listen to other's choices, although it would be much appreciated. Please see original post for more details. Also, if you are worried about time, this has no closing date. And if you find there are too many to want to listen to, maybe limit to one per submitter -- should take minimal effort to figure that out since this poll is not many pages long).

Mentioned already, but Interactive polls should scratch each other's backs. ;) It's more than "A POLL", it's a community of polls from our community -- it's the communal aspect that most draws me to these. Here's Eduardo's (Heart of the Matter) Interactive poll (the newest one) which came out a few days after this one, and is a different take and framework for highlighting some modern music. https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=131191" rel="nofollow - 2023 Epics Interactive Poll I would have mentioned Swans' Beggar Lover (Three), but will think of something else, maybe. Not surprisingly, that is very Prog-centric, and I am not as into modern Prog as some (or if I am it tends to more outlier, questionably Prog stuff -- love Swans of course). If only Anna von Hausswolff had one this year....

Many thanks to Greg for setting this poll up and to everyone for your contributions. Lots of good listens and I did delve into full albums as well.

Artists that were familiar to me were already familar to me were iNFiNiEN, Monika Roscher Bigband, Birth, Voivod, and Black Midi. With iNFiNiEN, Monika Roscher Bigband, and Voivod, I have earlier albums by them and their recent albums are on my to buy list. iNFiNiEN's album I had listened to a number of times and having a subscription to a music streaming service has the benefit of getting exposure to a lot of new and old music, but I don't always get around to purchasing, which I want to do to support the artists.

Voivod is an old favorite that I haven’t really listened to much of their newer stuff. The track posted is good but falls into sounding like just another Voivod track to me. I had already purchased the Birth album last year and I have given several listens to Black Midi through Amazon Music since they are highly regarded here but they just haven’t quite click with me.

Like Greg, I’ll restrict my voting to not dilute value but that’s hard. I think I have settled on 6.

ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT - The Sons and Daughters of Poor Eternal: This was even better in the context of the full album and I am prone to like these cinematic

Jeremias Keller – Silicium: Very intriguing and again a better listen for me as full album.

Maud the moth + trajedesaliva – Perla: I need to get a translation, but sonically, the album was wonderful listening experience. The textures and the spoken word parts gave a full “concept album” experience without knowing the words.

La théorie des cordes - ALP La colosse d'Anatolie: Some great musicianship and composition. This also benefited from a full album listening.

Monika Roscher Bigband - Starlight Nightcrash: I had not listened to the album prior to the posting but have since, and I just enjoyed the entire experience with the modern big band sound. I am definitely prone to liking me some brass.

Sylvie Courvoisier Trio - Imprint Double: Really good jazz and the interplay of the three instruments is wonderful. All standouts but I really enjoyed the drumming. While the full album isn’t available to listen on Bandcamp, I have it queued up on Amazon Music.

Fourth (and final you hope) share. I just came across this band on my Bandcamp feed and this should add to some diversity as I guess I would describe it as alt rock country soul with Bandcamp tags of alternative rock and art punk. Probably not going to gain any new listeners here but this video makes it on my list of all-time WTF music videos.  A young band as their debut album was 2 years ago and recorded when the band members were just teenagers. This track has a classic rock feel like the Rolling Stones and I enjoy this retro sound. From their 2023 album https://geesebandnyc.bandcamp.com/album/3d-country" rel="nofollow - 3D Country .

Geese - Cowboy Nudes

Note to Greg. As to not add more non-diversity to this, I’ll only provide a Bandcamp link. Your suggestions collectively reminded me of a recent discovery, the band BIG|BRAVE and their latest album https://bigbravesl.bandcamp.com/album/nature-morte" rel="nofollow - nature morte , though they have been around for about 10 years. Their music is labeled as post metal/ambient metal. They are from Montreal and associated with the post-rock scene there and the producer of their album also produced Lingua Ignota’s last album. Are you familiar with them?

Listened to this more than once now but usually while doing other things, and some of these obviously need full concentration to do them justice. The thing with "as many votes as you like" is that it's hard to decide where to stop. But anyway, great playlist once more, and for now I vote for Perla, ALP La colosse d'Anatolie, Voodoo Spinning, The Flesh of the World, Cosmic Tears, Visitor, Imprint Double, Ein Traum, I nostri giorni. These are really wonderful. Maybe I add some later. I already knew the Infinien and black midi album (artists! you don't make it easier mentioning you if you mess up upper and lower cases!), so I won't vote for them. Infinien is a real highlight. Not quite so sold on black midi.

No time yet to explore full albums, but thanks for providing all the links. I guess a good number will end up in my collection.

Many thanks to George and Christian. By the way, my mother died last night.   It's been a long time coming, not unexpected, and I have spent much of the last few days with her (the nursing home let me know last week that she had taken a turn for the worse, and so I stayed at her condo, which we had wanted to keep in case she could go back home at some time). Right now it's busy trying to arrange things and let her friends know. It's been quite a saga. Anyway, really busy with a lot of related matters, but wanted to say something if I seem to disappear for a while.

Finally, I managed to listen to our playlist properly. These tracks particularly caught my attention:

(Sorry for this lengthy first comment, but I would like to say a bit more about my compatriot)

Jeremias Keller: Silicium

Keller is well-known in the Swiss contemporary music scene but I’m not familiar with his solo work.

In the video description another Swiss musician, Nik Bärtsch is named as a co-author of his solo album, Alloy. I learned from Keller’s website that the music is based on musical modules by Nik Bärtsch, which he used and reinterpreted in his own way. I am impressed by the musical richness and intensity of the chosen instrumental piece, especially considering that Keller played all the instruments and produced the album all by himself. Also, I have learned that “Alloy” is a concept album which makes me even more curious to listen to the whole album.

Bärtsch is a prominent figure in the Swiss music scene, and is known also beyond the country’s borders. He is the band leader of Ronin, an experimental band where Keller plays bass. Sometime ago I attended a concert of theirs. I can highly recommend them if you ever get the chance.

Infinien: Ascent

Indeed, an outstanding and musically complex piece! Far from the typical prog rock sound we can hear in “Ascent” a classical piano run accompanied by symphonic instrumentation paired with prog rock and a discreet influence of jazz. I am not necessarily a fan of opulent and dramatic music, but this piece also has a certain lightness, especially through the instrumentation and the way the classical instruments are used.

La théorie des cordes: Alp - Le Colosse d'Anatolie

A rich and well-crafted prog rock piece with strong influences of jazz rock.Their sound is reminiscent of various well-known 70s prog and jazz-fusion bands, but this element of oriental music makes their sound very special and unique.

Musical diversity and an innovative spirit are something I particularly appreciate. Moreover, the latter is the actual theme of this poll, at least as I understand it. So even though the following two tracks don't quite convince me musically, I still want to give them my vote. If I could give to my top favourites two votes each and to my other favourites one vote respectively, that would be just perfect to me.

Tkomas Ankersmit

I learned that he is not only a musician but also an installation artist. I can well imagine that his music shows its effect in such a context.

Teke::Teke

I find this blend of psychedelic rock and influences from Japanese surf rock interesting and refreshing. Their style reminds me of Dengue Fever, a band that George introduced to us in a previous poll. I really like them.
